Chapter 149: Chapter 149: Kotoamatsukami
Shortly after Ōnoki ordered the Iwagakure forces to accelerate their march, the Ōtsutsuki clan on the moon, ever vigilant of the shinobi world's movements, began to act.
The elder named Shinri "looked" toward the clan leader, Ōtsutsuki Shefei, and said in a grave tone:
"Clan Leader, according to the scouts who just returned from the shinobi world, Iwagakure and Kumogakure are currently attacking Konoha. To fend off this invasion, Konoha must have left its village defenses wide open. This is the perfect opportunity for us to act!"
Ōtsutsuki Shefei didn't hesitate for long. He nodded firmly and declared, "Very well. We move immediately!"
This had always been part of their plan; now was simply the moment when the time was ripe.
They would retrieve the Byakugan, awaken Toneri's Tenseigan, and then annihilate the shinobi world—using the power of the Tenseigan to reshape it entirely.
"The destiny of the Ōtsutsuki clan is finally taking its first critical step forward!"
Taking a deep breath, Shefei led the clan through the secret space-time passage on the moon, traversing the vast distance to appear in a mountain cave within the Land of Fire.
This passage, thought to be unusable, was cautiously inspected and found intact, showing no signs of external interference.
Creating a new passage would have been a considerable burden for the Ōtsutsuki clan on the moon in their current state. Hence, they opted to use the original route.
"Look," Shefei addressed the nine clansmen who accompanied him, his tone serious. "We'll act swiftly. Once we secure the Byakugan, we'll leave the shinobi world immediately."
"Understood. We'll cover for you and Elder Shinri, and fend off any attackers!" his clansmen responded, their expressions solemn.
At that moment, Shinri spoke softly, offering a suggestion:
"Clan Leader, should we make some contingency preparations, just in case?"
Shefei nodded. "We'll assess the situation when the time comes. Securing more Byakugan would be ideal."
Although the clan could access the power of the Tenseigan even without direct possession of Byakugan, acquiring more of these prized eyes was undoubtedly advantageous.
"Let's move quickly. We still have some distance to cover before we reach Konoha!" Shefei commanded in a deep voice.
In the next instant, several wooden carts flew out of the cave, racing toward Konoha. Each cart was accompanied by three lifelike puppets, floating silently in the air.
These puppets, created through the Tenseigan's Yin-Yang Release, were naturally capable of flight.
As the moon's Ōtsutsuki clan advanced, the Iwagakure and Konoha forces clashed in a vast plain.
Though scouts on both sides had detected the enemy's presence, there was little time to prepare or organize, resulting in what was essentially a skirmish.
Barely forty minutes had passed since Ōnoki ordered his troops to accelerate their pace, yet already 8,000 shinobi clashed in brutal combat.
Iwagakure had sent 5,000 ninjas, while Konoha could only field 3,000—a stark numerical disadvantage for Konoha.
Initially, both sides maintained formations, unleashing large-scale ninjutsu volleys at each other.
Earth, fire, and water releases collided in an overwhelming spectacle, leaving the battlefield scarred and desolate.
"So this is how wars are fought now? It's quite different from the Warring States era," remarked Uchiha Hikaru, standing on an elevated rock at the battlefield's edge, her eyes fixed on the chaos.
"In this era, the power of ninjutsu has grown exponentially due to the sheer number of shinobi."
During the Warring States era, no single clan could field forces of this magnitude.
Iwagakure's forces relied heavily on Earth Release, though Wind and Fire Release users weren't lacking. Konoha, meanwhile, displayed remarkable proficiency across all five chakra natures.
Each wave of ninjutsu exchanges tore apart the earth, leaving the terrain in ruins.
Rather than rushing into the fray, Hikaru observed the battlefield closely.
Before long, as massive Earth, Wind, and Water Releases erupted across the battlefield, the fighting devolved into chaotic individual and small-group skirmishes.
"It always comes down to individual combat in the end," Hikaru murmured, nodding slightly.
Her gaze swept across the battlefield, focusing on the Uchiha clan at its center—particularly on Uchiha Fugaku and Uchiha Shisui.
"So those are the Uchiha who've awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan? They do seem capable," she mused, her cold, murderous intent radiating.
"Let jinchūriki test their strength first," Hikaru thought to herself.
Despite her enemies being within reach, Hikaru remained composed. She wanted to see how this era's Uchiha clan differed from those of the Warring States period. Had their combat style evolved?
She didn't act rashly, confident that if she took this seriously, she could end the war in an instant.
Whether it was Kumogakure's 5,000 shinobi or Konoha's 3,000, all would fall before her.
As soon as the battle began, Kumogakure's two jinchūriki caught the attention of Uchiha Fugaku and Uchiha Shisui.
Though formidable, the jinchūriki were forced to tread carefully, wary of the Mangekyō Sharingan's potent genjutsu.
Neither of them were perfect jinchūriki—their tailed beasts wouldn't help them dispel illusions.
Meanwhile, Ōnoki faced fierce resistance from the Nara, Akimichi, and Yamanaka clans, as well as Hyūga Hiashi.
While Dust Release was formidable, Hiashi's Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm effectively disrupted Ōnoki's techniques.
Surrounded by four elite jōnin, even Ōnoki dared not lower his guard, knowing a single misstep could spell disaster.
Fugaku clashed fiercely with the Four-Tails' jinchūriki, Rōshi, forcing the latter back. Glancing toward Shisui, who was locked in combat with the Five-Tails' jinchūriki, Han, Fugaku shouted:
"Shisui, end this quickly! We're outnumbered by Iwagakure. If this drags on, we'll collapse!"
"I understand. This fight will be over soon!" Shisui replied confidently.
Han, clad in his custom red armor, sneered at Shisui's words.
"Uchiha brat, you're dreaming! Not even the Fourth Hokage dared to say such things to my face!"
"The Fourth Hokage might not have, but I will!"
As Shisui's words echoed, his Sharingan spun, transforming into the distinct pinwheel pattern of the Mangekyō Sharingan.
