Chapter 40: CHAPTER 40 - Breakthrough of the Caged Bird
Time passed, and the conflicts within the ninja world continued to intensify. The skirmishes between the Five Great Shinobi Countries were becoming more frequent, and even Hyuga Mirai, while out on missions, encountered both Iwa Shinobi and Suna Shinobi.
Although Hyuga Mirai was deeply immersed in his research experiments, he still carried out his duties as a Chunin. However, his missions had decreased in number, and most of the time, it was Hyuga Kiyo or Kurenai Yuhi who requested him to take on more challenging tasks. Hyuga Mirai would occasionally visit the Hokage Building to accept B-rank missions.
The Yellow Flash of Konoha had gained some recognition outside the village. After his encounter with the A and B-ranked ninjas from the Cloud Village, the title of "Yellow Flash" would become well-known throughout the shinobi world.
Although Hyuga Mirai spent most of his time at the Konoha Hospital's laboratory, he still paid attention to village affairs. Today marked his thirty-sixth experiment. After comparing dozens of cellular gene references, Hyuga Mirai finally understood the principles of the Caged Bird seal.
The seal, which was rooted both in brain tissue and the soul, was specifically designed to target the Byakugan. It could be considered a crude form of Six Paths Technique. Since it involved Yin-Yang Release, Hyuga Mirai had not yet fully figured out the soul-based sealing technique. However, by rewriting the gene sequence, he could remove the Caged Bird seal's effect on the Byakugan, which was a significant step.
"After the branch family dies, the Caged Bird disappears, but it's laughable that it only disappears from the physical body's Yang Release seal. The soul-based Caged Bird seal remains. This is like a 'slave even after death' type of curse seal," Hyuga Mirai mused.
He vaguely remembered that during the Fourth Shinobi World War, when Hyuga Hiashi was reanimated by Orochimaru's Edo Tensei technique, the Caged Bird seal remained on his forehead even in his reanimated state. Orochimaru had no reason to spend so much effort on a branch family Jonin's reanimated body. According to the Edo Tensei technique, the Caged Bird seal should not have been present.
"I'll start by removing the Caged Bird seal targeting the Byakugan. As for the seal on the soul, I'll need to study it further before attempting to deal with it."
With that decision made, Hyuga Mirai began creating an injection serum to rewrite the genetic sequence of his own cells. This would cause him to temporarily lose the ability to use the Byakugan, but once the seal was removed, he would regain the Byakugan—this time without any weaknesses.
"For now, this is the only option. If Orochimaru has made progress, I can integrate some of the Hashirama cells' gene sequences," Hyuga Mirai thought.
The Senju, Uchiha, Hyuga, and Uzumaki clans all descended from the Otsutsuki clan, meaning there was likely compatibility and synergy between their bloodlines. If the right conditions were met, these genes could complement and merge with one another.
Suddenly, two thuds echoed through the ground. Only Orochimaru's summoning snakes could reach the bottom level of the Konoha Hospital's laboratory using Earth Release techniques.
"Hyuga Mirai!"
Hyuga Mirai swiftly removed the sealing runes surrounding the lab, and a white snake emerged from the ground using Earth Release. The snake then spat out a scroll, which, after making contact with a summoning technique, released a puff of smoke and returned to the Ryūchi Cave.
"This method of communication may be convenient, but it's really hard to get used to," Hyuga Mirai said with a slight twitch of his mouth. He grabbed a handkerchief to wipe the slime off the scroll before opening it.
After reading it, Hyuga Mirai smiled slightly. This was Orochimaru's good news scroll. Since Orochimaru had learned the scientific methods for cellular gene research from Hyuga Mirai, his progress on studying Hashirama cells had accelerated significantly. In less than a year, Orochimaru had almost fully analyzed the genetic sequence of Hashirama cells.
The message from Orochimaru was that he had successfully extracted the properties of Hashirama cells and applied them to different experimental subjects, achieving a success rate of thirty percent. At the end of the message, Orochimaru invited Hyuga Mirai to his laboratory to see the results.
"Visiting wouldn't hurt. It's also a good opportunity to discuss the terms of our deal," Hyuga Mirai thought.
He had already prepared his cloning and cultivation technology. This technology could perfectly clone a person based on their genetic sequence, and he had even modified it so that the clones could be created with their own consciousness through sealing techniques—turning them into true shadow clones.
However, the cost of creating a clone was extremely high. Hyuga Mirai had calculated numerous times, and with the current conditions in the shinobi world, it would cost millions of ryo and take at least four years to clone a perfect version of himself. The costs were immense, the time required was long, and he would need a private space for the cloning process. With his current living situation in Konoha—only a 30-square-meter apartment and no personal laboratory—Hyuga Mirai had no means to cultivate his own clones.
Although many of Dr. Genus' research methods were practical, the technological environment in the shinobi world made it impossible to rapidly replicate his breakthroughs.
But Orochimaru would undoubtedly be very interested in this. Orochimaru had already expressed his desire for immortality, as he believed that long life was essential for discovering the ultimate truths of the world. If Orochimaru could develop a technique that combined cloning with a method of avoiding the need for body transference, he could truly achieve immortality.
Over the course of his dealings with Orochimaru, Hyuga Mirai had gained numerous valuable techniques, including barrier jutsu, the Eight Gates, and sealing techniques. Apart from the Reaper Death Seal, Hyuga Mirai had learned nearly every sealing technique in Konoha.
However, since Orochimaru had never seen the Reaper Death Seal, he couldn't learn that technique from him.
To Orochimaru, the exchange of knowledge with Hyuga Mirai seemed unequal. Although the Eight Gates was a forbidden technique recorded in the Sealing Scroll, no one had succeeded in practicing it due to its dangerous nature. That was likely why it had been sealed away in the first place.
As for other barrier and sealing techniques, Orochimaru believed that none of them compared to the value of the gene research methods Hyuga Mirai had taught him. Without Hyuga Mirai, Orochimaru might still be years away from making any major breakthroughs with Hashirama cells.
"This time, I can use my cloning technology to exchange it for a summoning scroll from the Ryūchi Cave and the technique for transforming into a spirit. I wonder if Orochimaru can get that ninjutsu," Hyuga Mirai thought.
He briefly pondered, feeling confident that there would be no major issues. Orochimaru's backing was Danzo, and with his power as Konoha's assistant to the Hokage, he should have no trouble acquiring the knowledge on sealing techniques.
Hyuga Mirai left the Konoha Hospital laboratory and changed his appearance as he walked. He activated his Byakugan to ensure that no one noticed his movements before heading towards Orochimaru's laboratory.
At this moment, Hyuga Mirai needed a low-profile environment to work on the Caged Bird seal, so he couldn't afford for anyone to know about his dealings with Orochimaru. Otherwise, he might find himself caught up in Konoha's internal power struggles.
