Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Ritual Begins

We spent the next hour preparing for the ritual. The scroll provided detailed instructions, but the process was complex and required precise timing. The shard of the Void, the celestial tear, and the phoenix's heart had to be placed at specific points on the platform, and the incantation had to be recited perfectly.

"Are you sure about this?" I asked as I placed the shard of the Void on the northern rune. "Once we start, there's no turning back."

Skully nodded, his eye sockets glowing with determination. *"We don't have a choice, Master. The Mark is getting stronger, and I can feel it… changing me. We have to do this now."*

I placed the celestial tear on the eastern rune and the phoenix's heart on the western rune. The moment the final ingredient was in place, the runes on the platform began to glow, their light pulsing in time with Skully's rune.

"It's working," I whispered, stepping back. "The ritual is starting."

Skully stood at the center of the platform, his rune glowing brighter than ever. The air around him shimmered, the energies of light and darkness converging on his tiny frame.

*"Ready, Master?"* he asked, his voice echoing with an otherworldly tone.

I nodded, my heart pounding. "Ready."

We began the incantation, our voices blending together as the runes flared with light. The shard of the Void, the celestial tear, and the phoenix's heart began to dissolve, their energies flowing into Skully's rune.

The platform shook, the pillars trembling as the ritual reached its peak. Skully's form began to glow, his bones shimmering with golden light. But then, something went wrong.

The Mark on Skully's ribcage began to pulse violently, its light shifting from gold to a deep, ominous red. Skully let out a cry of pain, his form flickering as the Mark fought against the ritual.

"Skully, what's happening?!" I shouted, my voice barely audible over the roaring energy.

*"The Mark… it's resisting!"* Skully replied, his voice strained. *"It's trying to take over!"*

I stepped forward, my mind racing. The ritual was supposed to break the Mark's hold, but it wasn't strong enough. We needed something more—something to tip the balance in our favor.

Then it hit me. The Mark was tied to the Ancient One, a being of immense power. If we couldn't break its hold, maybe we could replace it.

"Skully, I have an idea!" I shouted. "But it's risky!"

*"Do it!"* Skully replied, his voice barely a whisper. *"I trust you, Master!"*

I placed my hand on Skully's rune, pouring every ounce of my mana into it. The Mark flared, its red light clashing with the golden energy of the ritual. The platform shook violently, the pillars cracking as the energies fought for dominance.

But then, something extraordinary happened. The Mark began to dissolve, its red light fading as the golden energy consumed it. Skully's form stabilized, his bones glowing with a pure, radiant light.

The ritual was complete.
