My Not So Sweet CEO

Chapter 6: The Trip To Bahamas

As I arrived in the office, I went to have a meeting with Elena that left me drained, but an idea had been forming "How about bringing Daniel Park into this?" I suggested, watching her reaction carefully. "His expertise in molecular physics could be valuable for the presentation."

Elena's eyebrow arched slightly. "Daniel? He's brilliant, certainly... but can he be trusted with this level of... sensitivity?"

"I think he's exactly what we need," I said, surprised by my own conviction. The irony wasn't lost on me by trusting the man who somehow had unauthorized access to my research.

The rest of the day passed in a blur of meetings, lab work, and avoiding Daniel's attempts to catch my attention. When I got home, my mind was a mess of quantum equations and Defense Department implications,

I collapsed onto my couch, pulling out my phone to text Daniel:

" We need to discuss several things. Tomorrow evening?"

The mechanical cricket sat on my coffee table, its presence was a silent reminder of all the mysteries I needed to unravel.

"I'm starving," Letty's voice interrupted my thoughts as she dramatically flopped onto my bed. Her lab coat was still on, her hair slightly disheveled from what I assumed was another long day at the hospital.

"When did you get in?" I asked, grateful for the distraction.

"Just now. Please tell me we're not cooking tonight. My brain is too fried to even think about chopping vegetables."

I smiled, putting my phone down as it buzzed with Daniel's reply. "Take-out or that new Thai place downtown?"

"Thai," Letty said decisively, sitting up. "But first, you have to tell me what happened with that cricket thing from last night. Your text this morning was frustratingly vague."

I hesitated, wondering how much I should share. "Let's talk over Pad Thai? I could use some fresh air anyway."

"Fine," Letty groaned, rolling off my bed. "But you're not getting out of telling me everything. And I mean everything - including why Calvin looked like he'd seen a ghost when that thing started chirping."

"Actually," I said, pushing my Pad Thai around with my chopsticks, "I was thinking of inviting Daniel too."

Letty nearly choked on her spring roll. "I'm sorry, what? Daniel? As in mysterious-knows-about-about your research? -Defense-Department Daniel?"

"Keep your voice down," I hissed, glancing around the restaurant. "And yes, that Daniel."

"Lily Martinez," Letty set down her chopsticks, fixing me with her most serious doctor stare. "Let me get this straight. Do you want to invite the guy who somehow got access to your classified research to a family vacation? Where your brother-in-law, who's your enemy will be?"

It did sound absurd. I took a sip of my Thai iced tea to buy time. "When you say it like that..."

"It sounds completely insane? Because it is." Letty leaned forward. "Unless... there's something you're not telling me about Daniel?"

I felt my cheeks warm. "It's complicated."

"With you, it always is." Letty sighed, but I could see a hint of a smile."

Letty grabbed my phone, scrolling through potential vacation destinations Mily had sent earlier. "So, Bahamas it is. Two weeks of sun, sand, and secrets. We need to shop."

"Now?" I asked, but I was already calculating what I'd need. Even with all the complications, a break from the lab might be good.

"Obviously, now," Letty said, pulling up her shopping list app. "We need swimsuits, summer dresses, and something that says 'I'm a brilliant scientist who doesn't care that her twin sister's husband."

I couldn't help but laugh. "Does Nordstrom carry that collection?"

"Let's find out." Letty was already ordering an Uber. "Plus, we need to get you something stunning for your meeting with Daniel tomorrow."

At the mall, we hit every store with methodical precision. Letty insisted I try on a midnight blue swimsuit that made me feel simultaneously confident and exposed.

"Perfect," she declared. "Calvin won't know what hit him."

"That's not the point," I protested, but I bought it anyway.

Our arms loaded with bags, we moved through our list:

- Sundresses in various colors

- Comfortable but elegant sandals

- Beach accessories

- A new laptop bag that could discretely hold the mechanical cricket

- Evening wear for dinner parties

- Casual daytime outfits

"What about this?" I held up a green sundress.

"Too similar to last night's dress," Letty pointed out. "Let's try something new. Like this coral one."

As we shopped, I couldn't help but notice how many security cameras were in each store. It made me wonder - who else might be watching?

"You're doing it again," Letty nudged me. "That paranoid scientist look. We're shopping, not conducting classified research."

"Force of habit," I mumbled but made myself relax.

"Oh!" Letty exclaimed, pulling me toward another boutique. "You need something for your evening with Daniel tomorrow. Something that says, 'I know you have my research, but I'm still in control.'"

I rolled my eyes but followed her. "It's a professional meeting, Letty."

"Sure it is," she smirked, holding a sleek black dress. "Try this on."

In the fitting room, I found myself actually enjoying the momentary escape from my complicated life. The dress did look good - sophisticated but not trying too hard.

"We also need beach reads," I called out to Letty. "Something mindless to counterbalance all the quantum physics in my head."

"And snacks for the flight," Letty added. "Oh, and new sunscreen. You burn like a vampire."

As we made our way to the bookstore, I spotted a tech shop. "Hold on," I said, pulling Letty inside. "I need some equipment to analyze that cricket."

"Only you would go vacation shopping and buy scientific equipment," Letty sighed but followed me in.

I was examining a high-resolution portable scanner when my phone buzzed again. Daniel: "Looking forward to tomorrow. Wear something nice."

Letty read the message over my shoulder and grinned triumphantly. "See? The black dress was the right call."

"This is getting complicated, isn't it?" I asked, suddenly feeling overwhelmed.

"Honey," Letty linked her arm through mine, "it was complicated the moment that cricket started chirping at your family dinner. Now, let's get ice cream, and you can tell me exactly what you're hoping to learn from Daniel tomorrow."
