Chapter 19: The Unofficial and Unnecessary Date
Kikidori had made a mental note to never let Mina anywhere near his phone again. Unfortunately, that decision came about ten seconds too late.
It started innocently enough—or at least as "innocent" as Mina could manage. She was still buzzing with energy, her overexcitement partially fueled by her ongoing "monthly misery," as she called it. Kikidori didn't want to get involved in that situation. In fact, he was doing everything possible to stay out of her orbit, but fate—and Mina's endless curiosity—had other plans.
"Let me see your phone for a sec!" Mina chirped, leaning over his desk and flashing her most disarming grin.
"No," Kikidori said firmly, pulling his phone closer to his chest.
"Oh, come on!" Mina whined, her pink eyes sparkling with mischief. "I just want to look at it for a second. I promise I won't do anything crazy."
Kikidori raised an eyebrow. "You can't promise that."
"Okay, maybe not, but trust me!" she said, clasping her hands together in mock pleading.
"No."
Mina pouted but didn't back down. Instead, she lunged forward with surprising speed and snatched the phone right out of his hands.
"Mina, give it back," Kikidori said, his voice low and dangerous.
"Nope!" Mina said, holding the phone above her head like a trophy. "I just want to see something real quick."
Kikidori reached for it, but Mina danced out of his grasp, giggling like a child. "You're going to have to try harder than that!"
Before Kikidori could make another attempt, Mina unlocked his phone and opened his messages. Her grin widened when she saw Toga's name at the top of the list.
"Oh my gosh," Mina said, her voice dripping with glee. "She really does text you all the time, doesn't she?"
"Mina," Kikidori said through gritted teeth, "give me my phone. Now."
But Mina was already typing. Her fingers moved quickly across the screen, and before Kikidori could stop her, she hit "send."
"There!" Mina said, handing the phone back to him with a proud smile.
Kikidori stared at the screen in horror. The message she'd sent to Toga read:
**"I love you too."**
"What did you do?" Kikidori said, his voice low and dangerous.
"I did you a favor!" Mina said, completely unbothered by the glare he was giving her. "Now she knows how you feel."
Kikidori's mismatched eyes widened. "That's not how I feel!"
"Sure it is," Mina said, waving him off. "You're just too stubborn to admit it."
Kikidori was about to retort when his phone buzzed. He looked down at the screen, and his heart sank even further.
Toga had replied.
Her message read:
**"OMG! You love me back?! I knew it! I knew we were meant to be together! I'm coming to see you tonight so we can celebrate! Don't try to stop me!"**
Kikidori's grip on the phone tightened as he read the message, his mind racing. "Mina," he said slowly, "do you have any idea what you've done?"
Mina leaned over to read the message, her eyes lighting up as she took in Toga's enthusiastic response. "Aw, she's so excited! That's adorable!"
"It's not adorable," Kikidori said, his voice strained. "She's going to show up here. At UA. Tonight."
"So?" Mina said with a shrug. "Let her come. It'll be romantic!"
"It'll be a security breach," Kikidori snapped.
Mina rolled her eyes. "Relax, Kikidori. She's not going to hurt anyone. She's just here for you."
Kikidori opened his mouth to argue but stopped when he realized it was pointless. Mina was in one of her "unstoppable meddler" moods, and there was no reasoning with her when she was like this.
"Fine," Kikidori said, shoving his phone into his pocket. "But if she shows up, it's your fault."
"Deal," Mina said cheerfully.
The rest of the day passed uneventfully—or at least as uneventfully as it could when you were part of Class 1-A. Kikidori tried to focus on his classes, but his mind kept drifting back to Toga's message. He had no idea how he was going to handle the situation, but one thing was certain: Mina owed him an apology.
When the school day ended, Kikidori returned to his dorm room, his nerves on edge. He knew Toga well enough to know she wasn't bluffing. If she said she was coming, she meant it.
Sure enough, just as the sun began to set, there was a soft knock on his window. Kikidori turned to see Toga standing outside, her golden eyes glowing with excitement.
He sighed. This was going to be a long night.
