Chapter 44: Taking over the City
Leon's voice cut through the tense silence, steady and cold. "Thought you could get away with everything, didn't you? All the lives you've ruined, all the power you've hoarded. It ends here."
Rex's sneer faltered for a moment before he forced confidence back into his tone. "You think this changes anything? I have more power, more resources than you can even fathom! You're just an upstart!"
Unmoved by the empty bravado, Leon raised a hand, his fingers curling as he activated Gravity Flux beneath Rex. The ground around him shimmered faintly before solidifying into a dense field of crushing pressure. Rex staggered, his legs trembling under the weight, unable to move more than a few inches in any direction.
"You're not as untouchable as you think," Leon said, his voice low and menacing.
As Rex gritted his teeth, attempting to summon some last shred of power, Luna advanced with predatory precision. "You've had this coming for a long time, Rex," she said, her blades gleaming. "Time to pay for your sins."
Rex unleashed a desperate surge of energy, casting a shadowy wave of mana toward Luna. But before it could reach her, a portal shimmered into existence, swallowing the attack. The energy emerged from another portal just beside Rex, striking him instead. His cry of pain echoed through the chamber.
Leon smirked. "Dimensional Rift," he said casually, as if explaining the move to an audience. "You won't be pulling off any of your usual tricks here."
The battlefield shifted into chaos as Leon layered his spatial abilities. Portals appeared and disappeared with dizzying speed, warping Rex's attacks back toward him. Chaotic energy lashed out, battering him from all sides, as Leon's mastery over space completely dismantled the once-dominant vice lord's defenses.
Rex's terror became palpable. His earlier arrogance evaporated as he stumbled, his movements sluggish from the unrelenting weight of the Gravity Flux. "You think this is over? You can't stop me! You don't know what I—"
Leon cut him off with a sharp gesture, the space around Rex distorting violently. "Stop talking," he commanded, his voice colder than ever.
Luna, meanwhile, circled like a predator closing in on its prey. Her strikes were precise and devastating, forcing Rex to expend every bit of energy he had left just to deflect them. Each blow chipped away at his confidence and stamina until he was barely holding on.
In a last-ditch effort, Rex tried to create a shadow clone to escape, but Leon was faster. He snapped his fingers, and the clone was pulled into a portal, vanishing into a void of nothingness. Every exit Rex tried was sealed before he could even reach it.
Finally, Rex collapsed to his knees, bloodied and broken. His once-imposing figure now looked small and pitiful under the relentless weight of defeat. He looked up at Leon and Luna, his eyes filled with desperation. "Please… we can make a deal. I'll give you anything! Money, power, land—just let me live!"
Leon exchanged a glance with Luna, who didn't waver for a moment. Her expression was resolute, her eyes burning with justice—and vengeance. "Deals?" she said, her voice dripping with disdain. "You think you can buy your way out of this? After everything you've done?"
Leon stepped back, folding his arms. "He's all yours, Luna."
Rex's eyes widened in horror. "No, no! Wait—!"
But it was too late. Luna's blade flashed in the dim light, and Rex's cries were silenced. His body crumpled to the ground, lifeless.
For a moment, there was silence. The oppressive aura that had hung over the city seemed to lift, replaced by an almost eerie calm.
Leon turned to Luna, his expression softening. "It's done."
Luna wiped her blade clean and nodded. "It had to be." Her voice carried no regret, only determination.
As they stepped out of the fort, the city stretched before them, finally free from Rex's tyrannical grip. The streets, though battered and weary, now held the potential for a new beginning. The people would have a chance to rebuild, to reclaim their lives.
For the first time in a long while, Leon felt a sense of peace. He looked at Luna, who gave him a small nod of approval. "We've come a long way," she said, a faint smile on her lips. "But this is just the beginning."
Leon nodded, his thoughts turning to the challenges ahead. With Rex defeated and the city liberated, there were still other forces at play—greater threats looming on the horizon. But with the power of a Dimensional Weaver on his side, Leon felt ready.
"Let's rest while we can," he said, glancing back at the city. "The next battle won't wait forever."
As the two of them walked away, their figures silhouetted against the rising sun, it was clear that their journey was far from over. But together, they will survive whatever the future had in store for them.
{ Quest Completed }
{ Reward has been placed in Challenger's Inventory }
{ Next Quest is available when Challenger rises to City Lord Position }
{ Keep working hard, Challenger. May the Celestials be with you. }
As the sun rose higher, casting warm light over the liberated city, Leon and Luna took a quiet moment by the outskirts, sitting near the path that had led them into this fight. They were both exhausted, but the victory brought a strange calm, a brief respite before the storm they both knew was inevitable.
"Where do you think we should go next?" Luna asked, her eyes lingering on the city. She hadn't realized until now how much she wanted to protect it. But a familiar restlessness was already returning, pushing her to continue. She could see it in Leon's expression as well.
"There are still untapped dungeons and hidden relics scattered across the land. Every artifact we find brings us closer to… well, whatever endgame is waiting for us," Leon said, glancing at his system notifications again. The recent battle had unlocked even more possibilities within his Dimensional Weaver path.
Cherry chimed in, her voice calm and informative. [ Several locations nearby possess high levels of untapped energy, indicating advanced dungeons or strongholds. If Host wishes to continue leveling and gathering resources, those would be ideal targets. ]
Leon raised an eyebrow. "How far off are they?"
[ Not far, ] Cherry replied. [ Three of them are within a few days' journey by foot, though one is rumored to be abandoned. The rumors, however, are unverified, and the system indicates significant potential within. ]
"Thanks to my new skills I can now sense the distortions caused by Dungeons" Leon said
Leon looked over at Luna. "One of those dungeons could have what we need. Plus, the more powerful artifacts we find, the better our odds in any future conflicts."
Luna nodded, understanding the importance of consolidating their victory and preparing the city for a new era. Rex had been a menace, exploiting his power and crushing the city's spirit. But in the Azure Kingdom, a place steeped in strict traditions and archaic customs, merely defeating Rex wouldn't be enough. They needed a leader who could officially take the reins, and unfortunately, the kingdom's traditions meant that Luna, a woman, wouldn't be accepted as the new City Lord.
With a slight sigh, Luna turned to Leon. "We need to announce Rex's death—and that you'll be taking his place. The city needs stability, and they'll accept it more easily if it comes from you."
Leon paused, glancing at Luna with a mix of surprise and reluctance. "Me?" He had always preferred to remain in the background, tackling threats head-on rather than dealing with the politics and power plays that came with ruling.
"It's the only way," Luna said, her tone gentle but resolute. "The city needs a figurehead, and according to the traditions of the Azure Kingdom, a male leader is required. Besides," she added with a faint smile, "you've already proven you have what it takes."
Leon could see the determination in her eyes and knew she was right. Even though the prospect of leadership didn't thrill him, he recognized the role he'd have to play. It was a necessary step if they wanted to keep Blue Wind City secure and bring real change to a place oppressed for too long.
"Fine," he agreed, his gaze firm as he looked out over the city. "If this is what it takes, I'll do it. But only on the condition that you're by my side in every decision. We'll rule together, whether the kingdom approves or not."
Luna gave him a grateful nod. "Deal. Let's make sure this city thrives again."
Leon nodded while inwardly he thought 'well, the quest trigger condition was easily met'
The announcement was made the next morning, news spreading quickly through the streets. Posters were put up declaring Rex's fall and the arrival of a new City Lord, Leon. Word spread even faster by the eager whispers of townsfolk, relieved that the tyrant was no more and intrigued by the sudden change in leadership. To the people, Leon was a bit of an enigma. Some knew him as Luna's ally, the fierce warrior who had fought alongside her to defeat Rex, while others saw him as the unknown outsider who'd bravely stepped up to save the city.
