Chapter 5: Father and Son
Early the next morning, just as Yue was about to drag Ryūsen out the door, a large hand gently ruffled his hair. Looking up, he was met with Minato's smiling face.
"What is it, Father?" Yue asked, a little puzzled.
"Well~ I've finally wrapped up most of my work, so I have some free time today. How about I train with you? Is that okay?"
"Then let's go."
Without hesitation, Yue took Minato's hand with one hand while dragging Ryūsen with the other and strode straight out the door.
Seeing this, Minato turned back and gave Kushina a smile, to which she responded with a gentle look, gazing at the father and son warmly.
"Come back early for dinner!"
'How nice…'
Kushina thought to herself.
Upon arriving at the training ground, Yue wasted no time. He immediately raised Ryūsen with both hands, preparing to continue practicing his basic movements. In Yue's view, the foundation of any learning or training was of utmost importance. Even the most advanced knowledge required a solid base to be effectively utilized.
However, before he could start, Minato stopped him. Yue looked up at his father, confused.
"Yue, can you tell me what you've mastered so far?"
At that moment, a pang of guilt hit Minato—he realized he didn't know his son as well as he should.
"This past year, I've been refining my chakra and training my body. I've also been practicing some chakra control techniques, like engraving words into wood and cutting leaves."
"I see. Looks like you have a wind-nature chakra, just like me. But let's confirm it with this."
Minato pulled out a piece of chakra paper from his ninja pouch.
"Hold this between your fingers and channel your chakra into it. The paper will change according to your chakra nature: wind will cut it, lightning will wrinkle it, fire will burn it, water will soak it, and earth will crumble it. Go ahead and give it a try."
Yue examined the paper in his hand. It felt no different from regular white paper. Then, he guided his chakra to his fingertips.
Within moments, the chakra paper wrinkled, then split in half as it fell to the ground. One side ignited midair, while the other became damp.
"Wind, lightning, water, and fire… That's incredibly rare. There are very few shinobi with four chakra natures. Yue, I truly believe you're a genius!"
Minato's eyes widened in amazement, a proud smile spreading across his face. After all, this was his son.
"Father, how do we start?"
Yue, unfamiliar with the structured training of shinobi, had so far relied on basic exercises and self-exploration. He knew his methods were nowhere near as efficient as systematic training under Minato's guidance.
"For today, let's start with tree climbing using chakra. It's still too early for you to learn ninjutsu, but testing your chakra nature helps us plan ahead.
Although you can already engrave words into wood and cut leaves with chakra, tree climbing training will further improve your chakra control. The principle is simple: you focus chakra into the soles of your feet to adhere to the tree, then walk up."
Minato demonstrated by casually strolling up a tree trunk, standing horizontally on it.
Yue watched and couldn't help but think: Dad's got a strong core…
Without saying a word, he walked up to a tree and focused chakra into his feet. He lifted one foot onto the trunk, then withdrew it.
After carefully gauging the necessary chakra output, he took a few steps back and sprinted toward the tree.
Under Minato's astonished gaze, Yue practically ran straight up to the top—almost reaching the peak of the ten-meter tree. However, his momentum faltered just half a meter short, and due to his young age, his core strength wasn't enough to maintain balance like Minato. He lost control and began falling.
Fortunately, Minato was there. There was no need for a crash landing—he caught Yue instantly.
"You did really well, Yue."
Sensing his son's dissatisfaction, Minato quickly offered encouragement.
But in Minato's eyes, for a four-year-old to accomplish this much was already unheard of.
Yue, however, wasn't pleased. His calculations had predicted that he would reach the top and land properly, but he had fallen short at the last moment. Almost immediately, he thought of another way.
Slipping out of Minato's arms, Yue leaped onto a tree branch. Slowly, he shifted his foot toward the underside of the branch. As his foot moved, his body tilted downward, head first, as if he were about to fall.
Minato, startled, prepared to catch him.
But Yue hung upside down from the branch, completely still.
"This kid really has a lot of ideas…"
Minato was both impressed and amused.
Yue began testing different movements—walking, balancing on one leg, switching legs in an instant. What would take a normal person a week to adapt to, Yue mastered in less than half an hour.
He even had Minato fetch a stone just big enough for him to hold. Even with the added weight shifting his balance, Yue remained firmly attached to the tree.
After another half-hour of practice, Yue jumped back down, looking up at his father.
Minato immediately understood what he wanted and let out a small laugh. He then led Yue to a nearby riverbank.
"Since you've already mastered tree climbing, let's move on to water walking. The principle is the same—channel chakra into your feet.
This time, I won't demonstrate. Let's see what you can do."
Minato was genuinely astonished by Yue's talent today.
Yue stood by the river, deep in thought. He noticed a small protruding area along the riverbank where the water's flow was relatively slow.
He walked over, dipped one foot in as a test, then stepped fully onto the water.
Minato watched as Yue struggled for a couple of seconds but quickly stabilized himself. After taking a few steps, he moved toward the river's center. Though unsteady at first, within a minute or two, he was already running confidently across the rushing water.
"What a remarkable child," Minato murmured to himself.
"Father, could you disrupt the water flow with ninjutsu?"
Standing on the river, Yue suddenly made a request.
"I got it. Wind Release: Vacuum Sphere."
Minato swiftly formed hand seals and sent a controlled blast of wind into the water near Yue's feet. The water's surface rippled violently, and Yue's balance wavered as he struggled to adjust.
For over half an hour, Minato continuously cast ninjutsu to disrupt the water, while Yue fought to maintain his footing. Both father and son were utterly exhausted when Yue finally climbed back onto the shore.
Even Minato, despite weakening the jutsu's intensity, felt drained from the frequent releases.
This also made him realize just how incredible Yue's physical and chakra reserves were.
They sat quietly on the ground, catching their breath.
Though nothing was said, Yue cherished this moment—because he had someone who truly cared about him.
"Shall we head back, Yue? Kushina is probably cooking by now."
"Alright."
