Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Gentle Megumi
Megumi Kato arrived at the Service Club.
Yukino Yukinoshita's sharp tongue had no effect on her whatsoever.
Hachiman Hikigaya figured it was best to just stay silent.
"Hello, everyone! I'm Megumi Kato from Class 2-F."
She gave a soft smile.
Yukino closed the book she was reading.
Since a student had come to visit, it was only natural for the club president to step up.
"As you can see, Kato-san, this is the Service Club's activity room."
Yukino stood up and walked over.
Megumi nodded.
Meanwhile, Ren Asakura had already made his way to Hachiman.
"Hey, Hachiman, don't just sit there looking miserable. Come on, log in and play a match with me."
...
Yukino took Megumi on a brief tour of the simple clubroom.
She also explained the club's purpose—helping students solve their problems.
Megumi found it quite interesting.
On days without requests, members were free to do as they pleased, as long as they didn't disturb others.
Yukino glanced over at the two boys sitting in their chairs, munching on snacks while playing games.
"…In any case, Kato-san, there aren't many strict rules in the Service Club. In fact, you don't even have to attend club activities regularly if you don't want to."
There were actually quite a few relaxed clubs like this at school.
But because they had so few members, they were often disbanded.
Most students at this age were full of energy.
They usually joined more mainstream clubs—
Like the basketball club, soccer club, or baseball club.
These were some of the most popular clubs in high school.
"I see."
Megumi seemed to be seriously considering something.
Yukino thought for a moment before asking—
"Kato-san, do you have any troubles you'd like help with?"
Megumi gave it some thought.
"I don't think I have any pressing issues… but I have been looking for a suitable club to join. Does that count?"
Yukino nodded and began listing some interesting clubs.
Megumi listened carefully, seriously considering each one.
Perhaps it was just part of her personality.
Megumi Kato didn't want to join a club where she didn't know anyone.
In the end, Yukino Yukinoshita suggested that she temporarily join the Service Club. If she found a more suitable club later, she could leave anytime.
At the same time, she could also get a deeper understanding of the club's activities.
Megumi nodded in agreement.
As time passed, everyone gradually discovered her gentle and easygoing nature.
It was as if she never got angry—always kind to everyone.
Sometimes, she even seemed to disappear completely.
Even Hachiman Hikigaya occasionally failed to notice her presence.
The one who always spotted her first was none other than Ren Asakura—the club's resident eccentric.
Finally, after a long period of peace, the Service Club received a request.
---
The clubroom was as silent as usual.
Ren Asakura admired the bookshelf he had carefully set up.
It was packed with various manga and light novels.
"Megumi, behold my precious collection! Hahaha!"
Megumi Kato glanced at the assortment of books.
"Asakura, aren't you afraid that Yukinoshita will get mad if you leave these here?"
Ren smirked confidently.
"Relax. I have a foolproof plan."
Then, he pulled a massive pile of snacks out of his bag.
"With enough money, anything is possible. I know Yukinoshita can be bribed. If one pile of snacks isn't enough, I'll bring two! There's no way a girl could resist the temptation of delicious food."
Megumi tilted her head slightly.
"…I still think she's going to get mad. She'll probably lecture you for this."
Ren struck a proud pose.
"Don't worry. My skin is extra thick!"
Megumi, in her usual calm tone, replied—
"…That doesn't seem like something to be proud of."
Just then, the clubroom door swung open.
Yukino Yukinoshita walked in, carrying her bag.
The moment she stepped inside, her eyes immediately locked onto the bookshelf across the room.
Then, a cold, piercing glare shot toward Ren Asakura.
"Asakura-kun, this is not your home. Don't bring your personal collection here. Be careful, or I might have to report you for sexual harassment, you pervert."
That familiar tone.
That familiar attitude.
Ren felt a sharp pain in his heart.
Then, Yukino turned to Megumi Kato.
"Kato, you shouldn't go along with his nonsense. Honestly, I'm starting to suspect he used some kind of special method to force you into being his friend."
"If he really resorted to criminal activity, please let me know. As his club president, I'll personally make sure he ends up in juvenile detention."
Ren clutched his chest as if he had been shot again.
"Ouch… Yukinoshita-san, your words are as sharp as ever. But I refuse to let you question my friendship with Kato!"
Megumi stood quietly to the side, watching this chaotic scene unfold—just as she did every day.
Yukino let out a small chuckle, as if mocking him.
"For a problem child like you to have someone as kind as Kato as a friend… it feels like you've used up all your luck for this lifetime."
Ren straightened up dramatically.
"Don't underestimate me! I have plenty of friends. You're one of them too."
Yukino paused for a moment.
"…And what exactly is your definition of a friend? When did we ever become friends?"
Ren immediately switched to his tragic protagonist mode.
He took two steps back, placed a hand over his heart, and filled his gaze with sorrow.
"We became friends long ago… So why have you forgotten? Have you been brainwashed by the Bald Demon King?"
Yukino sighed, feeling a headache coming on.
No matter how sharp-tongued or cold she was, nothing could counter Ren's unyielding social energy.
Her eyes drifted toward the bookshelf.
Finally, she spoke.
"…The Service Club is relatively free-spirited, but this isn't a library—"
Before she could finish, Ren was already prepared.
He pulled a pudding dessert from his snack stash.
"Heh. I predicted your prediction. That's why I brought a dessert so irresistible that even Kusuo Saiki wouldn't refuse it! Now… succumb to my bribery, President!"
Ren struck a stylish JoJo pose.
Yukino knew that if she rejected him, he'd just keep pulling out more tricks—until she eventually gave in.
Truthfully, the area where the bookshelf now stood had originally been a cluttered mess.
Ren and Megumi had cleaned it up and repurposed unused materials to build the bookshelf.
Now, instead of junk, the space was neatly organized with his collection.
Yukino sighed.
"…This isn't the first time, so do whatever you want."
Ren leaped into the air in excitement.
"Once again, victory belongs to Ren Asakura!"
He turned toward the bookshelf, grinning.
"Kato, see anything you like? These are my top-tier selections—guaranteed to be amazing!"
