Chapter 99: The Confession (99)
The night sky stretched endlessly above them, a deep shade of indigo sprinkled with countless stars. The meteor shower was at its peak, streaks of silver and gold cutting through the darkness in graceful arcs. The world around them was still, as if nature itself held its breath for this moment.
Haruto and Aiko sat side by side on a soft blanket spread across the cool grass. The air carried the faint scent of blooming flowers and the distant hum of crickets. Their fingers brushed against each other, and without thinking, Haruto reached out, intertwining his fingers with Aiko's. She didn't pull away. Instead, she let their hands rest between them, warm and steady.
Aiko exhaled softly, her heart hammering against her chest. She had never felt this nervous in her life. For years, she had cherished their friendship, treasuring every moment they spent together. Haruto had always been her constant—her closest friend, her safe place, the boy who made her smile even on her worst days.
But tonight, everything felt different. The way the stars shimmered, the way their hands fit together so effortlessly—it all made her realize something she had been afraid to admit.
She turned to look at Haruto, studying his face in the soft glow of the starlight. His usual carefree expression was replaced with something gentler, his brown eyes reflecting the sky above. He looked so at peace, so completely himself.
Aiko swallowed, gathering the courage that had been building in her chest for so long. Her fingers tightened slightly around his.
"Haruto," she whispered.
He glanced at her, his eyes meeting hers with quiet curiosity. "Yeah?"
She hesitated for a moment, her heart racing. Then, before she could second-guess herself, she took a deep breath and spoke the words she had been holding inside for what felt like forever.
"I think… I love you."
The confession was barely louder than the breeze, but to Haruto, it was the only sound that mattered. Time seemed to slow. His breath caught in his throat, his mind struggling to process what he had just heard.
Aiko immediately looked down, suddenly unsure if she had made a mistake. "I know this might be unexpected, and I don't want to ruin anything between us, but… I couldn't keep pretending anymore." Her voice wavered slightly, but she forced herself to continue. "You're the most important person in my life, Haruto. I've felt this way for so long, and no matter how hard I tried to ignore it, it never went away."
Haruto stared at her, his heart pounding against his ribs. Aiko—his best friend, the person who had always been by his side—loved him?
He opened his mouth to say something, but the words got caught. Not because he didn't know what to say, but because, deep down, he knew the truth.
He loved her too.
It wasn't something he had realized all at once. It had been there all along, in the way he always looked for her in a crowded room, in the way he memorized every little thing she loved, in the way her happiness had always mattered more to him than his own.
And now, hearing her say it first, he couldn't believe he hadn't seen it sooner.
Aiko shifted slightly, mistaking his silence for rejection. "I—"
Before she could finish, Haruto gently squeezed her hand.
"Aiko," he said softly. "I love you too."
She blinked, her breath catching as she met his gaze. "You do?"
Haruto chuckled lightly, shaking his head. "Yeah. I think I've loved you for a long time. I just didn't realize it until now."
Aiko let out a small, breathless laugh, a mixture of relief and disbelief washing over her. She had prepared herself for so many possible outcomes—heartbreak, awkwardness, even regret—but never this. Never the warmth spreading through her chest, never the feeling of being held so gently by the words she had longed to hear.
Another meteor streaked across the sky, its light reflected in their eyes. Haruto glanced up, smiling. "Guess we should make a wish."
Aiko shook her head, her fingers tightening around his. "I don't need to. My wish already came true."
Haruto turned to her, watching as her lips curved into the softest smile. He had always thought she was beautiful, but in this moment, under the falling stars, she looked like something out of a dream.
Unable to help himself, he reached out, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. His hand lingered for a moment, his fingers brushing against her cheek. Aiko's breath hitched, her skin tingling under his touch.
Haruto's voice was barely above a whisper. "I don't ever want to lose you."
Aiko's eyes softened. "You won't."
She didn't know who moved first, but suddenly, the space between them disappeared. Their foreheads touched, their breaths mingling. The night air was cool, but neither of them felt the chill.
For a long moment, they simply stayed like that, their hearts speaking in a language only they understood.
And as the stars continued to fall, painting the sky with fleeting brilliance, Haruto and Aiko knew—this moment, this love, was theirs.
Forever.
