Chapter 70: Chapter 69: Black Panther's Terminal Illness
Peter nodded.
Then, with a slight sense of bewilderment, he looked at the refined yet restrained king in front of him and asked in surprise, "So, you already know about your illness?"
In his original world, the Black Panther's death in Black Panther 2 was a result of a "plot kill," brought about by the sudden passing of the actor who played him. This forced the filmmakers to abandon their original plans and introduce a new storyline, elevating Black Panther's sister, Princess Shuri, to the role of the new Black Panther.
It was a solution dictated by real-world circumstances.
But it came with numerous inconsistencies.
For instance, the Kimoyo Beads—a technological marvel—benefit even ordinary citizens by promoting health and longevity.
As the king of Wakanda, how could Black Panther succumb to illness? Was that even reasonable?
But now, Peter was in this world.
Here, Black Panther's death wasn't driven by the actor's passing or the demands of the plot.
In other words, Black Panther truly suffered from some deeply hidden illness, one so elusive that even the advanced Kimoyo Beads couldn't detect it.
However, while the Kimoyo Beads are relatively simple, if Wakanda's research center and its cutting-edge equipment were used to perform a comprehensive examination, they might just uncover the root cause of Black Panther's illness!
At least, that's what Peter thought initially.
This belief stemmed from the fact that when he crossed over, the Marvel Cinematic Universe had only reached Doctor Strange 2. Most of his understanding of Black Panther 2 came from online discussions.
There were only two certainties: first, Black Panther died of an illness, and second, his sister, Princess Shuri, became the new Black Panther.
Thus, Peter only knew that Black Panther would die sometime after Avengers: Endgame, though he didn't know exactly when.
Now, however, it seemed that Black Panther himself was aware of his condition, though he had chosen to keep it a secret.
Black Panther nodded, his voice lowering slightly. At the same time, the Kimoyo Beads on his wrist emitted a faint glow.
Although Peter wasn't sure what he had done, he could sense that a small, invisible barrier had formed within a two-meter radius around them, likely to block out any sound.
"Your Majesty—"
"Call me T'Challa," Black Panther interjected. "You're not one of my subjects; we're just friends."
"Alright, T'Challa. What exactly is your… illness?" Peter asked cautiously, choosing his words carefully. He was uncertain about the specifics of the situation.
If it was truly an illness, Wakanda's technology—capable of curing cancer and even simulating neural structures to create Vision's mind—should have easily handled it.
With such advanced medical technology, it was almost impossible to imagine an illness so severe that even the king of Wakanda, Black Panther himself, could do nothing but keep it hidden.
T'Challa spoke, "Since you already know, I won't hide it from you. But promise me, don't tell anyone. Not a single soul."
Peter nodded. "I swear."
T'Challa gave a slight nod of acknowledgment. "The disease I have—I call it Quantum Hematological Failure."
"Quantum Hematological Failure?" Peter was stunned. The term was so obscure that even professional medical doctors might not know what it meant.
T'Challa explained, "You've heard of organ failure, haven't you?"
Peter nodded again.
Organ failure typically occurs in older individuals and is a common cause of death in the elderly. As people age, organs like the heart, kidneys, and brain gradually deteriorate—a natural phenomenon.
Of course, younger people can also experience organ failure due to various reasons.
Peter had heard stories about many online writers who, due to prolonged late-night writing, irregular schedules, and unhealthy diets, suffered from organ failure—sometimes even resulting in death.
Sometimes, he wondered if he himself might have already died, and if everything he was experiencing now was just a fantasy in the moments before his death.
Just Blood Source Failure?
What kind of symptoms are those?
Does it have something to do with blood?
Black Panther explained, "Over a year ago, I accidentally discovered that my blood is undergoing continuous deterioration. The red blood cell count is decreasing, and even new blood generation has significantly slowed. After carefully studying it, I realized this was a pathological phenomenon originating from an extremely microscopic level—a realm so intricate that even Wakanda's technology is powerless against it."
"Not even Vibranium can help?" Peter asked, puzzled.
Vibranium technology is the cornerstone of Wakanda, far surpassing Earth's technological advancements by countless eras.
Black Panther shook his head slightly. "I've been secretly researching this for the past year, but there's been no progress. What I need from you is to tell me how much time I have left."
At this moment, Peter extended his hand.
A faint glow lit up on his fingertip.
"To be honest, I have control over quantum energy. If your illness is related to this, maybe I can help in some way."
Black Panther's composed demeanor slipped for a moment, and he leaned closer to Peter, his eyes fixed intently on the glowing fingertip.
"Is this truly quantum energy?"
Peter nodded. "I'm certain. This is quantum energy that I've drawn from the quantum realm."
"Can you give me some for research? I'm willing to pay any price!" Black Panther exclaimed.
Peter smiled. "T'Challa, there's no need to be so formal. You said it yourself—we're friends. Friends help each other; there's no need to talk about money. Besides, as long as I can enter the quantum realm, I can gather as much of this energy as needed."
Black Panther smiled back and clasped Peter's hand. "You will always be my friend."
Peter returned the smile.
Even though he was short on money and could probably make a fortune by selling this quantum energy to Black Panther, who desperately needed it to survive, Peter didn't care.
Money is only as useful as what you need it for.
What he valued more was Black Panther's friendship—and Wakanda's friendship.
And clearly, he had made the right choice.
One way or another, he had earned Black Panther's trust.
However, quantum energy wasn't a cure-all.
Black Panther's condition was fundamentally different from Ghost's quantum instability.
The so-called "quantum hematological failure" simply referred to the underlying cause of his blood deterioration—something incredibly minute.
It was more of a conceptual term, not truly "quantum" in the strict scientific sense.
True quantum entities are indivisible physical quantities in the realm of physics.
Still, Peter's quantum energy provided Black Panther with a new direction to explore—a gateway into the microscopic realm.
It could very well be the key to curing his terminal illness!
It was akin to the moment when microscopes were first invented. Before then, humans had no idea that microorganisms even existed.
But one day, someone presented undeniable evidence and said, "Look, microorganisms are real!"
Once the existence of microorganisms was proven, research based on that foundation became far more productive than blind trial and error.
Having the correct answer from the outset ruled out countless uncertainties.
(Note: In the original storyline, Black Panther didn't approach Ant-Man or Dr. Pym for help for two reasons: first, they weren't familiar with each other; second, due to the political climate at the time, news of the Wakandan king's critical illness couldn't risk being leaked. This explanation serves as a patch for this part of the story.)
