Chapter 43: Chapter 42: The Particle Collider Activates!
Behind him, Mary Jane gazed at Peter. Her sorrowful eyes suddenly flashed with an obscure light, as if deep in thought.
She couldn't shake the feeling that this Spider suit looked familiar—like something she had seen in her husband's basement.
But he rarely wore it, so it left little impression on most people.
At that moment, Gwen-Spider leaned over and said, "Sorry, ma'am. The bread will be delivered shortly."
In the distance, middle-aged Peter Parker, almost being dragged away by Peter, muttered to himself, "For you, they should cover this place with fresh bread!"
Peter was utterly speechless and quickened his pace.
Just then, Peni spoke up. "Everyone, I've finished my scans. There's nothing unusual in the elevator."
As she spoke, she projected an image onto Peter's suit.
This was a feature of his suit's video module, which was integrated with its communication system. Not only could it facilitate real-time video calls, but it could also relay footage from miniature spider scouts.
However, with Peni around, Peter didn't need to manage these functions himself.
"Let's move out," Peter said, releasing his grip on middle-aged Peter Parker. "Mr. Parker, are you calm now?"
"I'm perfectly fine," the older Peter replied, hunched over and dejected.
Peter, Gwen-Spider, and Peni exchanged glances: He doesn't look fine at all!
Still, they held their tongues.
As the most experienced "veteran" among them, middle-aged Peter could be trusted to handle the critical moments.
Boom.
Just then, a faint tremor emanated from underground.
Official statements had recently warned of occasional deep-seated earthquakes beneath Brooklyn, but the tremors were too deep to cause significant harm.
Consequently, the people in the lobby remained at ease, drinking and chatting as usual.
This narrative was part of the story fabricated by Kingpin, who had bribed the media to disseminate it.
However, Peter and his team immediately tensed.
Middle-aged Peter's previously hunched posture straightened in an instant.
They all realized the same thing: the particle engine had started!
"Let's go!"
Meanwhile.
Dozens of meters below Fisk Tower, in a sleek, high-tech laboratory, numerous staff members were bustling about.
[Initializing primary ignition sequence.]
Two massive particle ejection ports began to extend slowly.
The earlier tremor had been caused by their movement.
In the control room, Kingpin stood before a massive grid-like screen displaying a multitude of surveillance feeds.
Among the feeds were images of Peter and his team.
Seeing this, Kingpin's lips curled into a cold smirk. "Our delightful audience has arrived. Let's begin, shall we?"
"Yes, sir!"
"Upload the genetic sequences for Vanessa Fisk and Richard Fisk!"
"Begin spatial match search."
In the server room of the control center, Lady Octopus received Kingpin's notification.
With her multitasking prowess, mechanical tentacles moved swiftly, adjusting the collider's pre-ignition data in no time.
The particle accelerator roared to life, running at full speed.
Two streams of immense energy shot out from distant coils, guided forward under the restraint of powerful magnetic fields. They raced toward the collider's collision point.
[Secondary ignition countdown begins.]
[Five]
[Four]
[Three]
As the countdown ended, two brilliant particle streams were launched from the accelerators, one from the left and one from the right, colliding head-on.
The entire Brooklyn area shook violently.
On the streets, lampposts, houses, skyscrapers, and bridges—all structures began to twist and distort in a phenomenon akin to a "rejection reaction."
Peter and his team confidently strode through the banquet hall, entering a pre-determined pathway that led them to an elevator.
Two armed gangsters stood guard at the elevator.
Peter and middle-aged Peter Parker took the lead, swiftly subduing them. With precise moves, they knocked the guards unconscious and webbed them to the ceiling.
Peni, now piloting her spider-mech and fully transformed into the Spider-Mecha Girl, raised her mechanical leg and kicked the elevator door clean off its frame.
It was a spectacular display of violent elegance.
Under normal circumstances, Peter and the others would have teased her about it.
But now, with their spider senses buzzing in overdrive, there was no time for jokes.
Without hesitation, they leaped into the elevator shaft.
"Watch out!"
As they fell several dozen meters and approached the exit, middle-aged Peter suddenly shouted.
At the same time, he stretched out his arms, weaving a massive spider web that enveloped the entire elevator shaft.
Simultaneously, Peter's spider sense flared even stronger, warning of imminent danger.
Without hesitation, Peter turned and grabbed Gwen-Spider, pulling her with him to stick against one side of the wall.
On the other side, middle-aged Peter Parker, after shooting his web, also pressed himself against the wall.
But the Spider-Mecha Girl had no such option.
After all, the spider mech was enormous.
However, she had her own methods.
She stretched her arms and legs forward, deploying several metal plates that combined to form a shield-like structure.
Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang!
A barrage of strikes echoed through the space.
From the elevator below, a metallic storm of bullets erupted, wreaking havoc in their direction.
"Is that all?" the Spider-Mecha Girl scoffed.
In the next moment, the spider mech transformed again. Its arms morphed into two high-speed spinning saw blades as it charged into the elevator below.
Screeeech!
Amidst a shower of sparks, the elevator was sliced cleanly in half.
Peter and Gwen-Spider exchanged a glance and immediately followed.
Inside the elevator below, there was no sign of bodies except for one unfortunate soul who had seemingly been crushed to death by the falling spider mech.
Clearly, Kingpin's men had decent combat skills.
By the time Peter, Gwen-Spider, and middle-aged Peter landed in the elevator remains, the Spider-Mecha Girl had already charged ahead.
At the doorway, more gangsters lay in ambush, all armed with automatic rifles.
For Kingpin, the underground emperor of New York and much of the Eagle Nation, acquiring such weapons was a trivial matter.
Even so, despite wielding automatic rifles loaded with armor-piercing rounds, these gunmen were no match for a mech.
Bullets ricocheted off the spider mech's exterior with a series of sharp metallic pings, and in moments, the gunmen were sent flying by the mech's powerful strikes.
In truth, everyone underestimated Peni.
This girl, who came from a quasi-EVA-like world, was not only a genius but also highly capable and experienced with harsh realities.
The only thing she had been lacking was resolve. But that gap had been filled earlier in the day when her mistake caused middle-aged Peter to get injured.
Now, she was undergoing her transformation, fully becoming the true pilot of the Spider Mech!
