Chapter 28: Mutant Underground Base
"It's a clever way to create a fear barrier, making people in the vicinity feel fear and choose to avoid it in order to protect the base's security. I'll help you test its effectiveness."
With a wave of his hand, Max opened a door in the air and stepped through it.
The door closed behind him, and the sense of fear disappeared. Max proceeded towards the Mutant underground base.
He passed the barbed wire gate and scanned the area, searching for his target.
Soon, Max spotted two individuals. One had a bald head, a long beard, and light blue skin with an aggressive appearance. The other was a black man on the stairs above, also bald, but with eyes on both sides of his ears, and who knows if there were more on the back of his head. They were vigilant, watching in all directions.
Ignoring these two, Max continued on towards the base.
Upon entering, he could sense the bustling activity inside. There were more people now, and an open area had been cleared with many beds set up. There were men and women, young and old, some with obvious non-human characteristics.

The monitoring room
Jenifer and Sonya sat monitoring the situation. There was no sign of Lorna or John, and there were no visible defensive measures or arrangements in the room.
Shaking his head slightly, Max created a door behind Jenifer and Sonya.
Stepping through, Max placed his hands and two guns against the backs of their heads and said coldly, "Don't move; you're under arrest."
Jenifer and Sonya were shocked and panicked.
Who was it?
Who had caught them? Why hadn't they heard any alarms or received any warnings from their defenses? Who could it be?
"Max?"
As Jenifer tried to quickly analyze the situation, Sonia tentatively called out and turned her head abruptly.
"Max, it's really you! You're back!"
Jenifer heard Sonia's excited exclamation and turned his head to see if Max was indeed behind him.
Jenifer couldn't help but comment, "This prank nearly scared me half to death!"
Just as Max was about to speak, Sonia leaped over and hugged him tightly. Other people had heard the commotion and curiously approached, looking at the stranger Max and the ecstatic Sonia in his arms.
"That was a prank!" Max held Sonia with one hand and said to Jenifer with the other. "Your security is seriously lacking. If I had truly intended to take action, I could have eliminated everyone in your base without anyone outside noticing."
Jenifer was startled. "Not everyone has an ability like yours."
"But that doesn't mean no one else can infiltrate. I know of several abilities that can achieve similar effects." Max smiled and continued, "I came to help you identify these vulnerabilities. Consider it a favor."
"What brings you here?" Jenifer asked.
"I'm looking for a place to stay," Max replied with a smile, then turned to Sonia and added, "That's enough hugging; I'll start charging you soon. I'm quite short on funds these days."
Sonia blushed and asked with concern, "You haven't encountered any danger, have you?"
Max chuckled, "Why don't you find a place where no one is around for your double-checking?"
To his surprise, Sonia responded in agreement, "Okay!"
Max was taken aback by her immediate response and couldn't help but laugh. "What about John and Lorna? Are they planning to stay here with you, or do they have other plans?"
Sonia explained, "They found out that a Mutant wanted to meet with them to see if they could persuade them to join us. As for the rest of the people here, some will stay, and some will be sent to Mexico. After you left, we followed your instructions and found a bar with a Mutant bartender who provided us with a lot of information and assistance. We're grateful for your help!"
Max smiled and said, "Then help me find a suitable location."
Sonia asked, "Aren't you planning to stay?"
Max shook his head, explaining, "I'll stay in Atlanta, but not here. I owe a lot of money, so I need to work hard to make a living. If you need help with smuggling Mutants across the border or if someone is caught by Sentry's secret service, you can contact me. While my services may be a bit more expensive, they are worth it."
The sage added, "But you have to promise to help some very poor Mutants who can't afford your services."
Just then, Lorna and John approached. John, in a burst of excitement, gave Max a playful punch in the chest before hugging him. Max, not accustomed to this friendly gesture, didn't expect John to be so enthusiastic. After releasing him, John gave him another friendly punch.
Confused by John's behavior, Max asked, "What's going on?"
John explained, "Don't be surprised, Max. We only do this with people we have a good relationship with."
Max nodded in understanding. "I see."
Lorna chimed in, "Don't think he just missed and worried about you. He has something to ask for your help."
John added, "But I'll pay for it."
Max inquired, "What's the matter?"
Jenifer recounted the recent events, and John responded solemnly, "Max is right. It seems we'll have to arrange for more vigilant security in the room in the future."
