Chapter 221: Battle
General Corvus Glaive's speech abruptly stopped when he noticed Gamora standing amidst the crowd.
Gamora sighed and stepped forward, addressing the general directly.
"It's not betrayal. He was never my father. He only wanted to use me, to mold me into a weapon. Go back and tell him this—I won't follow his orders anymore. I will live my own life."
Her declaration was met with a sharp response. Corvus Glaive hurled his spear toward her with full force.
"If you've betrayed the Great Thanos, then you'll die for it!" he roared, the spear slicing through the air with a piercing whistle.
"Clang!"
The sharp sound of metal colliding echoed as Mjolnir intercepted the deadly spear.
"Attacking a woman from behind? That's hardly the act of a warrior," Thor said, standing tall with his hammer raised.
"Well said, Thor. But attacking an ugly brute? That's fair game!" Tony Stark quipped, quickly combining the energy from his repulsors to fire a focused beam toward Corvus Glaive.
But the general of Thanos wasn't going to be defeated that easily. With a swift sidestep, he dodged the attack. However, Thor's follow-up—a bolt of lightning as thick as a tree trunk—left him no room to breathe.
The battle erupted in an instant. Corvus Glaive had only four Chitauri soldiers with him, a force paltry compared to the fully armed Avengers, who were joined by half of the Guardians of the Galaxy and a young Groot with early-stage powers comparable to Thor. Within moments, the Avengers overpowered him. The Chitauri soldiers didn't stand a chance, fried to a crisp by Thor's first strike.
Pinned to the ground by Mjolnir pressing into his chest, Corvus Glaive spat out threats between labored breaths. "You're all doomed. Thanos will never let you live. Gamora, you fool, Thanos is your father!"
"Shut your ugly mouth, or I'll blow your disgusting face to ashes! Although, to be fair, it can't get much uglier than it already is," Rocket snarled, shoving his blaster into Corvus's mouth to silence him.
"Why are we even keeping this guy alive? Let's just end him. Dead enemies are the only good ones," Rocket growled, cocking his weapon for emphasis.
"I'm okay with that," Tony said, raising his repulsor toward Corvus's head.
"Wait! You can't kill him!" Gamora protested, stepping forward again.
"Why not? He just tried to kill you. And let's not forget he's one of Thanos's top goons. Letting him live guarantees he'll come back with reinforcements," Tony retorted, glaring at her.
"When I was a child, he was my combat instructor," Gamora said, her voice tinged with sorrow.
The room fell silent for a moment. Though Corvus Glaive was an enemy, Gamora's past with him complicated things.
Tony lowered his hands, sighing. Rocket, however, remained unconvinced. "You're not seriously thinking of letting this guy go, are you? He's the enemy! We should've fried him already!"
Natasha placed a calming hand on Rocket's weapon. "You're right, but we're not killers. Let him go," she said firmly before turning to Corvus Glaive. "Tell your master this: Gamora is with us now. No one can force her to do anything she doesn't want to do. Oh, and one more thing—your ship stays. You owe us for the damage. We'll give you a smaller one to return home."
Rocket grumbled, reluctantly lowering his gun. "Fine, but the ship is on me. I'll find the smallest, most miserable one in the dock," he muttered.
In the end, Corvus Glaive was sent off in a pitiful single-passenger escape pod. It was so cramped he could barely move, let alone turn his head. But under the watchful eyes of Thor's hammer and Tony's repulsor beams, he had no choice but to comply.
While the Avengers knew they would eventually face Thanos, they didn't expect him to act so quickly.
In the MCU's original timeline, the Guardians of the Galaxy had entrusted the Power Stone to the Nova Corps. However, in this altered reality, the Collector acquired the stone, despite Thanos's prior threats.
To secure the Infinity Stones, Thanos had offered the Collector double the value and a promise of lifelong protection. But greed—or perhaps the allure of ultimate power—led to betrayal. The Collector kept the stone for himself, only to be hunted down and killed by Thanos later.
Unbeknownst to the Avengers, the distress signal Corvus Glaive sent after his defeat hastened Thanos's arrival.
Two hours after Corvus's departure, the dark silhouette of Thanos's massive warship, Sanctuary III, loomed over Knowhere. It descended like an ominous shadow, its overwhelming presence suffocating the celestial head.
And yet, miles away, Blake was still with Yondu,l chesling a gravestone for Ronan the Accuser.
