Chapter 13: Tansformation and Attack
Eight months passed in the blink of an eye.
Although the Anti-Kaiju Wall project had not been fully completed in certain areas, it had already entered its final stages. During this time, despite the Jaeger's victories against the newly emerged Kaiju, it was clear that the Wall faction, now in control, would never give the Jaeger Program any chance for a comeback.
Even though Shao Industries had provided many inspiring technologies, under the Wall faction's tacit control, few of them made it to the public's attention.
After eight months, the financial aid was completely halted, and the major member countries had abandoned the PPDC.
Fortunately, Stacker Pentecost and others had never placed their hopes on them. During these eight months, Stacker had transformed into a scrap collecting expert, visiting the Jaeger graveyard more than three times. Each time, he would take away an abandoned, decommissioned Jaeger.
With the single-person neural interface system provided by Luke Field, a trained and strong-willed individual, with the aid of the new intelligent system's load-sharing capabilities, could now operate a Jaeger independently. If it were an experienced pilot, with the smart system's assistance in load sharing and information processing, they could even perform better than they did when fighting with a partner.
No matter how perfectly synchronized two people were, how they seemed as one through the neural bridge, it was always an illusion. The single-person neural interface allowed for faster reactions and more efficient attacks.
In the words of the old pilots, the two-person system allowed them to operate a Jaeger, it couldn't fully tap into the machine's power. The more synced and focused the two pilots became, the more they could unleash the Jaeger's potential.
The single-person system lowered the thresholds, and with intelligent assistance, the old pilotd could exhibit combat prowess that even surpassed that of two-person driving. As they put it, it was almost like they and the Jaeger became one — a true fusion of man and machine.
Mechanical deification? No, the old pilots would say, at that moment, I was a war god!
This was a good thing.
For Stacker Pentecost, it meant he could take advantage of this breakthrough.
The only downside was that the old pilots, once struggling, now had the luxury of being able to operate the Jaegers more comfortably.
In order to increase the chances of his final plan's success and maximize the effectiveness of these old pilots, Stacker first needed new Jaegers. However, this was impossible. While the Wall faction still paid money to the PPDC every month, the funds only covered the operation and maintenance of the existing Jaegers. Any application for new ones would be promptly rejected.
The factories for new units had mostly shut down, and many of the bases had either been closed or transferred. The once-thriving Jaeger industry was now only sustained by Shao Industries. To build new Jaegers, they either had to reopen the factories or place orders with Shao Industries.
Either option would require a massive financial investment.
Unable to build new Jaegers, Stacker cleverly turned his attention to the old, decommissioned, and damaged ones. For the past few months, he had been acting as a scrap collector, personally recovering any Jaegers he believed could still be repaired and restored, even though he knew the public had already started to call him a scrap-collecting general.
For Stacker, this was all part of his ultimate plan — the final battlefield where he was willing to risk everything.
And Shao Industries, or Luke Field, has also become an excellent partner in Stacker's heart. No matter how damaged the Jaeger he picked up was, they could fix it and upgrade it. Although a large amount of PPDC's already small funds were lost during this repair process, Stacker no longer cares.
In the original timeline, there were only four Jaegers left in PPDC at this time. They were the fifth-generation Jaeger Striker Eureka, the fourth-generation Jaeger Crimson Typhoon, the repaired of the constantly upgraded veteran Cherno Alpha, and Gipsy Danger, which was retrieved and repaired by Mako Mori and Tendo Choi and upgraded to a fourth-generation Jaeger.
The strongest Jaeger, Crimson Typhoon, was also damaged before the final battle. The other pilot also died, and finally forced Stacker to fight alone at the cost of his life.
With Luke Field's assistance and technology, Stacker's options were now more plentiful. At least, the Shaolin Rogue had not been damaged, and after three months of upgrading and maintaining the operational Jaegers, as well as repairing three others, the PPDC base, which could accommodate thirty Jaegers, had now accommodated seven.
Even the earliest model, the Cherno Alpha, had undergone a complete overhaul. Aside from its appearance, almost everything else had been revamped — the energy system, shield system, intelligent system, and weapons system. Where it once had the power of a fourth-generation Jaeger, it now had the combat strength to rival a fifth-generation Jaeger.
The husband and wife duo absolutely loved the newly upgraded Cherno Alpha, believing Luke's modifications were precisely to their liking. After getting familiar with the new system, they eagerly awaited their next Kaiju battle.
Of course, since they had fought together for ten years, they were already accustomed to the two-person neural interface and didn't want to split up. As a result, Luke didn't alter the cockpit too much, but set the system so that when one person disconnected, the single-person interface would automatically activate.
The remaining Jaegers at the PPDC headquarters Crimson Typhoon, Shaolin Rogue, and Gipsy Danger also received upgrades, boosting their combat abilities well beyond what they had before. At least the three pilots of Crimson Typhoon stated that with their current unit, they could easily take down the Kaiju that had once trapped them and Shaolin Rogue.
…
"A new Kaiju has appeared and landed near the Anti-Wall in Sydney."
The base alarm suddenly blared, and Tendo Choi quickly reported the news.
"Have we asked the Sydney officials if they need to deploy the Jaegers?" Stacker Pentecost asked.
Tendo Choi quickly sent a message. Soon, he received a reply.
"They said that with the Anti-Kaiju Wall in place, they don't need our Jaegers." Tendo Choi widened his eyes.
