Chapter 40: Back to Earth, seeking comfort
** This chapter is half assed by my standards, but I don't really feel like editing or writing now as I just got home from work. I appreciate the supporting words, and that's the only reason I'm even uploading here, to be honest. I've decided to try without checking notifications and stuff, so it would mean a lot of questions might not get answered or some might get confused with the plot. I'll try to leave some explanations whenever possible.
As you can see, it's still breathing, so Imma leave it upto you guys to deal with him. If he posts a single shitty comment, go and gangbang him together and bury him. That's the only support I ask for now xD.
Now then, I'll slowly build up my patreon account, while uploading here, Patreon will have upto 20 advance chapters or more, and one day if it gets to much here, that will be this story's final destination as backup site.
I'll of course set the lowest price possible, but won't be free so that some loser with unlimited free time can go there and run his mouth. I think that's for the best.
I actually had a longtime dream of writing my own original story, I even started it, but gave up every time for some reasons. If I set up patreon, that will be added there. I'm not sure when might I do it though. All my stories here will be deleted after that except the Kingdom story, the first fanfic I seriously started writing, which is my last gift to my readers. Anyways, enjoy. I don't know for how long it might last.**
David returned to his universe in a daze, his heart still heavy with the weight of the destruction he had wrought, and the memories of a world he had erased.
The void of that universe still lingered in his mind, the fractured remnants of Hela's memory shard slipping through his hands like sand.
He stepped back into the world he knew—the world he had fought so hard to carve out for himself. But nothing felt the same anymore. The familiar landscape, the air, even the stars in the sky seemed different now.
David stepped through the rift between universes, the swirling black and gold energy dissipating behind him as he reentered his home reality. The silence of the void gave way to the faint hum of life—the distant murmur of the city, the gentle whisper of the wind through the trees outside his penthouse.
A suffocating loneliness had taken root within him unknowingly, and though he could still feel the weight of his power surging beneath his skin, he knew it was hollow.
It was the kind of power that came at a price—one that had taken so much more than he had ever anticipated.
But none of it could pierce the heavy weight pressing down on his chest. The destruction he had wrought in the other universe did not haunt him; he felt no remorse for annihilating those who had threatened the ones he loved. No, the ache came from something deeper—his own weakness. He wasn't strong enough. Not strong enough to protect Hela, not strong enough to keep his promise to her, not strong enough to prevent the Beyonder from toying with his fate like some cosmic puppet.
His fists clenched at the mere thought of it. Beyonder. That arrogant, omnipotent being who had orchestrated so much suffering for pure amusement, who had watched from the sidelines, entertained by their struggles. David's eyes burned with cold determination.
"I'll master it," he muttered to himself, his voice a whisper in the dimly lit room. "The power of Nihility. I will become stronger than the Beyonder some day... and show him what true pain is."
He exhaled slowly, forcing the rage back down, burying it beneath layers of steel resolve. Right now, there was something more immediate waiting for him—someone.
David turned toward the soft sounds coming from the kitchen.
The smell of something warm and familiar drifted toward him—her cooking. He made his way through the penthouse, his footsteps silent against the marble floor.
She stood by the stove, her golden hair cascading down her back, humming softly to herself as she stirred a pot. The sight of her, so blissfully unaware of the storm raging inside him, stirred something within David—something deep and aching.
Without thinking, he moved forward and wrapped his arms around her from behind, pulling her into him. Emma gasped in surprise, nearly dropping the spoon she was holding.
"David!" she exclaimed, twisting her head to look up at him. Her lips curved into a delighted smile as she turned in his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck. "When did you get back?"
"Just now," David murmured, pressing a lingering kiss to her forehead before resting his chin against the top of her head. He held her close, as if grounding himself in her warmth.
Emma's eyes sparkled with playful curiosity. "You seem… intense," she teased. Then her expression softened, sensing something deeper. "Did everything go okay?"
She noticed the shift in his demeanor the moment she saw him. There was something in his eyes—something distant and far too heavy for someone who had always been so composed, so driven.
David didn't answer right away. Instead, he scooped her up effortlessly into his arms, carrying her toward the bedroom. Emma let out a small laugh, resting her head against his chest. "You're not going to answer me, are you?"
He smirked, the ghost of his usual cocky charm returning. "Maybe I just missed you too much."
Emma's cheeks flushed slightly, and she playfully swatted his arm. "You always know how to get what you want, don't you?"
David placed her gently onto the bed, his gaze dark and intense. "You have no idea."
Later that night...
Emma lay curled up beside him, her fingers tracing idle patterns on his chest, the aftermath of their passion still lingering in the air. She studied him, noting the tension that hadn't fully left his body.
"David," she whispered, resting her chin on his shoulder. "What happened out there? Where did you go?"
David stared at the ceiling, his expression unreadable. But after a long moment, he spoke.
" I went to a primitive earth. It was quite nice. There was a friend there—Wen Wu. He... he was like a brother to me. And a woman, Hela, Thor's older sister, she was there too. She... we were together. We kind of fell in love."
Emma gave him a exasperated look and said, " You sure do get around honey."
"But it wasn't meant to be. Some bad things happened, and both of them perished. I wasn't strong enough to save them. All I. could think about was revenge, destruction and death . So I went after anyone who stood in front of me ," he said simply. "The Celestials, Odin... Galactus. I ended an entire universe to make a statement. To get revenge."
Emma's breath hitched slightly, but she didn't recoil. Instead, she pressed closer, resting a hand over his heart. "And did it help?" she asked gently.
David closed his eyes for a moment, exhaling deeply. "No," he admitted, his voice low and downcast. "It wasn't enough. Nothing ever is."
Emma tilted her head, her blue eyes searching his face. "I'm here," she said softly, brushing her lips against his cheek. "And I always will be. You don't have to carry it alone."
David's hand came up to cup her face, his touch gentle despite the storm within him. "You're too good for me," he whispered.
Emma smiled, a warm, teasing glint in her eyes. "Then you'd better seal the deal before I change my mind."
David smirked, rolling her beneath him and capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss. "Consider it done."
He had been so lost in the past, so consumed by his own pain, that he had forgotten there were still people who cared for him, who loved him. Emma's love, her unwavering support, was the only thing that kept him grounded, and for the first time in what felt like an eternity, he allowed himself to feel that love.
Emma carressed his face and spoke, " You don't need to be too hard on yourself. You did what you could. Sometimes, the only thing we humans can do is move on."
"I know," David murmured, his voice tinged with a sadness that seemed to weigh a thousand pounds. "I know. But it's hard, Emma. I can't escape what I've done. I can't forget her, or Wen Wu... or any of it. I wish... I wish there was another way. I wish I was strong enough to ingore consequences and do what I want."
Emma pulled him into a gentle embrace, holding him close as he let out a shuddering breath, his chest tight with emotion. She didn't need to say anything more. She just held him, offering the silent comfort of her presence, her love.
"You don't have to do this alone," Emma whispered, her voice soft but firm. "I'm here for you. Always. Whatever you're going through, I'll be right by your side. I'll love you through this."
David's eyes fluttered shut as he let her words wash over him, a flicker of hope sparking within the depths of his grief. He had always been a man who kept his emotions buried, locked away behind a wall of strength and power.
But with Emma, he didn't have to hide. She saw him—not as the weapon he had become, but as the man he still was, with all his flaws, his scars, his pain. And she accepted him.
A small, sad smile tugged at the corner of his lips. It was weak, almost imperceptible, but it was there. A reminder that, despite everything, he still had the capacity to feel. To love. To move forward.
"I don't know if I can ever truly be okay," David said quietly, his voice low. "But... maybe that's okay. Maybe this is just the life I have now.
A life full of disappointment, loss, and regret. But I'll keep living. I'll keep fighting. And maybe, one day, I'll find some peace. Maybe it'll be enough."
Emma's smile was gentle and knowing, her hands cupping his face as she gazed into his eyes. "You don't have to do it all at once," she said softly. "Just take it one step at a time. I'll be right here with you. Always."
David nodded slowly, taking a deep breath as he pulled back just enough to look at her. His heart was still heavy, but in that moment, he allowed himself to believe in the possibility of moving forward.
Of living. Even in the face of the darkness, there was still light. And maybe, just maybe, he could find it again.
"Thank you," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "For being here. For loving me. I don't deserve it, but... thank you."
Emma leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. "You deserve it more than anyone," she whispered back.
As the weight of the past lingered in the quiet corners of his mind, David allowed himself to embrace the future and accept that life, no matter how painful, was still worth living. He wasn't sure where it would take him or how many more battles he would face, but with Emma by his side, he knew he could face whatever came next.
The morning sun was bright as David pulled up outside the sprawling mansion, its familiar silhouette looming against the skyline. He took a deep breath before stepping out of the car.
The Xavier Institute always carried a weight with it—a reminder of the mutant struggle, of hope and loss intertwined. He was here to take on the offer made by Logan, maybe a drink and some unwinding would help. And if by chance some villain pops up, he'd get a therapeutic punching session.
