Chapter 148: Chapter 148: The Fall of Asgard
A light chuckle broke the tense atmosphere in the room. Everyone turned to see Han Yu, who hadn't been around for a while, entering with a seventeen- or eighteen-year-old girl at his side. The girl was curiously examining the surroundings.
"Who are you? Unauthorized personnel aren't allowed in here!" General Ross barked, clearly annoyed by the unfamiliar face.
"What's it to you?" Han Yu rolled his eyes dismissively and walked straight in, ignoring Ross entirely. He approached Loki, whose face was covered in soot and clothes were tattered, a clear sign that he had been through some sort of ordeal.
"What happened? What's going on in Asgard?" Han Yu asked.
"You insolent fool! Didn't you hear me? No unauthorized personnel allowed!"
Ross's frustration boiled over. First, Captain America and Stark had defied him, and now a stranger was outright ignoring him. Feeling his authority being undermined, Ross's men raised their guns, pointing them at Han Yu.
"Annoying."
Han Yu didn't even bother to turn his head. At that moment, Galacta, standing beside him, opened her mouth slightly and took a deep breath. The guns in the soldiers' hands suddenly flew out of their grip and disappeared—swallowed by Galacta.
"Ugh, such awful-tasting things. You'd better stop yelling, though. If you keep this up, I can't guarantee your safety," Galacta said with a sweet voice, her eyes narrowing into crescent moons.
Despite her cute tone, paired with her earlier actions, her words sent a chill down everyone's spine.
Who was this girl? She had just eaten several guns as if it were nothing.
Yes, eaten them!
And she showed no signs of discomfort. Without that shocking display, she could have easily passed for an ordinary, beautiful young girl.
Galacta had agreed to follow Han Yu's lead, considering him her "boss" for the time being. Protecting him was her responsibility, and she understood that well.
After her warning, General Ross looked as though he had swallowed a bitter pill. He couldn't argue, not against someone clearly operating on a superhuman level. Any attempt to fight back would only end in disaster, and Ross knew it.
"Unauthorized personnel, please leave. This is Avengers territory," Han Yu said without looking back.
His words flipped the situation entirely. Now, Ross and his men seemed like the intruders, uninvited guests barging into Avengers Tower without permission.
At this point, Ross finally recognized Han Yu. This "unfamiliar face" was the man responsible for resolving the Sokovia incident, rumored to be the secret director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
After hearing these rumors, Ross had even approached Nick Fury for confirmation. Fury, however, had denied it, claiming it wasn't true.
Han Yu had indeed stated before that he had no interest in managing S.H.I.E.L.D. Officially, he had no ties to the organization, despite having the authority to access its resources. To him, S.H.I.E.L.D. was nothing more than a tool, one he had used to install the X-System on their satellites for large-scale mutant detection. Beyond that, it held no significance for him.
"Hmph! Mark my words!" Ross growled coldly before storming out with his men.
After General Ross and his men left, the tension in the room eased slightly. The Avengers turned their attention to the beautiful young girl standing beside Han Yu, their eyes filled with disbelief. It was becoming clear that anyone who accompanied Han Yu was anything but ordinary.
Once Ross had gone, Han Yu turned to Loki and said, "Now, can you explain what happened?"
Loki sighed lightly. As he prepared to speak, the other Avengers took their seats, ready to listen.
"It's like this," Loki began. "News of Odin losing his divine power spread quickly, and the other realms began to stir. Shortly after, the Vanir aligned themselves with the Frost Giants and the Fire Giants to launch an attack on us. The losses have been devastating. Right now, the outskirts of Asgard are crawling with Vanir warriors, as well as Frost Giants and Fire Giants. Those vile creatures seized the opportunity to invade us!"
Loki slammed the table in anger. It was evident that his emotions were genuine. Despite his usual mischievous and treacherous demeanor—often at Thor's expense—his loyalty to Asgard was unwavering.
"Asgard has been invaded? And Odin losing his divine power—what's that about?" Stark asked, visibly concerned.
"To save Frigga—my mother—he made a deal with Han Yu. He willingly gave up all of his divine power," Loki explained with a sigh. "Odin doesn't have much time left, maybe a decade or so. Honestly, I think he made the right choice. At least he did something useful for me for once."
It was clear from Loki's words that he harbored deep feelings for Frigga—Odin's wife, Thor's mother, and his foster mother. Despite his outward denial of being part of their family, everything he did seemed to be a desperate attempt to prove himself, to show he could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Thor.
Han Yu stroked his chin thoughtfully. He had some knowledge of the Vanir.
The Vanir were a pantheon of gods led by the sea deity Njord. They were the only divine group in the Nine Realms that could rival the Asgardian Aesir in terms of technology and military strength, ranking just below them. Historically, the two factions were often at odds.
A cataclysmic war a thousand years ago left both the Aesir and Vanir devastated, forcing them to sign a peace treaty to avoid further conflict. Since then, the Vanir had receded into obscurity.
The Aesir, however, used the time to subdue other realms, restoring peace to the chaos of war. The region around Asgard became known as the Asgardian Sanctuary, the apex of the Nine Realms.
All of this was sustained by Odin's unmatched might. Without Odin, Asgard had lost its greatest pillar of support.
While both Thor and Loki had considerable combat experience, neither was ready to take Odin's place as the King of Asgard. In the grand scheme of things, they were still akin to infants in their roles, far from being capable of leading a kingdom.
Being a king required more than brute strength. And even in terms of strength, Thor and Loki hadn't reached a level that could deter the other realms.
Currently, neither of them had achieved the stature of a Sky-Father-tier deity, making it impossible for them to shoulder the weight of leadership.
The Vanir had recognized this vulnerability and seized the moment to strike.
Asgard, having supported Earth in the past, was naturally a priority for the Avengers. They wanted to step in and help. However, given their own limitations, they knew they wouldn't make much of a difference in a conflict of this magnitude. That was why Stark reached out to Han Yu, hoping he could assist.
The Avengers now turned their gaze toward Han Yu, awaiting his response.
And what did he say?
"A war between gods? What does that have to do with me?"
