Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Interview
"Mr. Hunter, what do you think is your advantage compared to the other applicants?" The beautiful female interviewer, Pepper Potts, asked as she looked at the handsome man sitting across from her.
"Just call me Shane. Hmm... I think my advantage can be summed up being handsome as hell and good as having sex,'" Shane replied with a wicked smile on his face.
"...?" Pepper's expression froze, thinking to herself, What kind of weird answer is that?
"Hahaha, don't misunderstand. I mean my rich experience, strong physique, and responsible attitude," Shane quickly explained with a laugh.
"..." Pepper was at a loss for words. This guy was truly hard to figure out.
"I noticed on your resume that you used to be a 3A-level bodyguard, specializing in protecting important people. Is that right?" Pepper continued asking.
"Well, what can I say." Shane nodded.
"Stark Industries collaborates with various bodyguard companies, so given your background, why didn't you apply for a bodyguard position with us, but instead chose a security guard role?" Pepper asked, clearly confused.
"As you can see, it's because I'm so handsome, just like the ideal face of many male readers. In my previous jobs, I really got tired of the harassment from clients (both men and women), so now I just want to be an ordinary, non-descript security guard," Shane said with a helpless shrug.
"… huh?"
Pepper Potts looked at the man in front of her, once again falling into silent bewilderment. This was the first time she had ever heard such a reason. She didn't expect that her spontaneous decision to leave the CEO's office and join the HR department for an interview would lead to meeting such a character. Although he was quite handsome, did he really need to be so narcissistic?
However, his resume was indeed impressive. As a former 3A-level bodyguard, his task completion rate was 100%, and he had received 100% positive feedback from employers. The HR department had already verified the authenticity of the information on his resume.
So, after thinking for a moment, Pepper figured that since she was just looking for a security guard, why not hire someone with such experience for a small price?
Just as she was about to officially give the well-dressed, upright Shane a job offer, her phone rang.
"Sorry, I need to take a call."
"Of course, please go ahead~" Shane smiled professionally, raising his hand to indicate that it was fine.
As Pepper walked out of the meeting room to answer the call, Shane listened to the conversation outside and narrowed his eyes before shaking his head.
'What a coincidence! To run into this at exactly this time?'
From inside the meeting room, Shane turned his head and looked at the door, as though he could see the anxious expression on Pepper's face through it.
Outside the door.
After answering the call, Pepper learned that Tony's convoy had been attacked. Her expression first showed disbelief, then she looked around before she couldn't help but cover her mouth with her hand to keep her emotions in check.
The person who called her was her boss, Tony Stark's close friend, Colonel James Rhodes of the U.S. Air Force.
"Pepper? Pepper?"
Hearing Rhode's urgent call from the phone receiver, Pepper snapped back to reality, realizing that she had been lost in thought.
"Oh my God! How could this happen? Rhodes, weren't you with him? How's Tony? What's his condition now?"
Hearing Pepper's series of questions, Rhodes, on the other end of the phone, could only respond.
"I can't give you the full details right now, but Tony was not seen at the scene of the gunfight. The military is actively searching for him. In the meantime, you need to stabilize Stark Industries and make sure the news doesn't spread. Even if the news leaks, make sure it doesn't escalate in the media, understood?"
"Okay..." Hearing that Tony's fate was uncertain, Pepper's voice couldn't help but crack with emotion.
"Hey, Pepper, calm down. Listen, I promise I'll bring Tony back safely," Rhodes reassured her.
After hanging up the phone, Pepper stood there in a daze for a few seconds, then quickly composed herself.
She then called in the head of the HR department to give some instructions about the interview she just conducted, before quickly moving on to handle more important matters for the company.
But then she suddenly remembered the resume from earlier, which clearly stated that Shane Hunter not only had extensive experience in security and escort missions, but he was also skilled in infiltration and rescuing targets. He had never failed a mission, and all his employers gave him five-star reviews.
The HR department head, who had been nervously waiting for Pepper's instructions, was now even more anxious. When he was told that Pepper Potts, Tony Stark's personal secretary, was coming to the HR department to assist with recruitment, he was shocked.
Even though Pepper's official title was simply the boss's personal secretary, her status was high. Have you ever seen someone who could freely enter and leave the boss's mansion, and handle his personal life and work arrangements?
Maybe his superior had connections that made him unafraid of Pepper, but he certainly couldn't afford to take such a risk. If he ever upset her, who would feed his eight-person family?
Just when the HR manager was in inner turmoil, Pepper had already made up her mind. She was a strong-willed woman, and once she decided on something, she would go for it. So, she dismissed the submissive HR manager in front of her, gathered her emotions, and turned to push the door open to the meeting room.
"Mr. Hunter, we are very clear about your situation. With your personal abilities, you are more than capable of handling a security position. So-" Pepper said calmly as she walked toward the interviewer's desk, addressing Shane, who was sitting opposite her.
"Catch?" Shane looked at Pepper, anticipating the follow-up she was about to say.
Upon hearing Shane interrupt, Pepper didn't show any frustration. After sitting down, she looked at him and continued, "There's something personal I'd like to ask you for help with."
When Shane heard this familiar introduction, he thought about his previous employers and couldn't help but roll his eyes. Personal meaning is something… personal… which leads to sex or lust.
But he knew this time, Pepper was referring to something else.
"Just so we're clear, I'm not selling my body, just my skills."
The heck?
Pepper, sitting across from him, gave him a puzzled look. What on earth was he thinking?
Nevertheless, she gathered her thoughts and made the final confirmation with Shane.
"Mr. Hunter, if someone were kidnapped by terrorists in Afghanistan, could you rescue him?"
Hearing Pepper's question, Shane didn't respond immediately. Instead, he tapped his fingers on the table.
The room was quiet. Pepper looked at Shane seriously, waiting for his answer.
"Do you have the mission details?" Shane asked.
"I can have someone send them to you," Pepper immediately replied when she heard Shane's voice.
"What's the payment for the mission?"
"Let's talk about it."
"Alright, but I have one additional request."
"What is it?" Pepper instinctively covered her collar.
"You have to hire me as a security guard."
???
Do you have some obsession with being a security guard? Pepper widened her eyes and stared at Shane across the table, but in the end, she nodded.
"Then, when does the mission start?" Once Shane knew his job was confirmed, he finally asked.
"Right now!"
