Lord of Deception

Chapter 95: Chapter 95: Threads of Rebellion

The night hung heavy over the Imperial Palace, a quiet tension simmering beneath its grand halls. Kael Arden left the Empress's chambers with measured steps, his mind already constructing a thousand possibilities.

Eleanor had made her move. She wanted to rule, and she believed he was the key to seizing the throne. It was a dangerous game, but Kael had long mastered the art of playing one step ahead.

Now, he needed to decide how much of her ambition aligned with his own vision.

The streets of the capital were alive with murmurs. The commoners spoke of Kael in hushed, reverent tones.

"The Duke stands against the corrupt nobles."

"He is the only one unafraid to challenge the Emperor."

"If war comes… I'd rather follow him than the throne."

Kael's reputation had transformed from an outsider to a symbol of defiance. And that made him both powerful and a target.

As he walked through the noble district, his sharp eyes scanned the shadows. He knew spies lurked everywhere, but there was one presence he had already sensed long before he stepped outside the palace.

"Following me?" Kael's voice cut through the night.

A figure stepped from the alley—Velka, the leader of the Inquisitors. Castiel's personal enforcer.

She was clad in tight, midnight-black leather, her crimson eyes glowing with unnatural intensity. "The Emperor wishes to speak with you, Duke Arden."

Kael smirked. "If Castiel wanted a conversation, he wouldn't send his pet assassin."

Velka tilted her head, amused. "Who said anything about a conversation?"

The throne room was silent when Kael entered. Emperor Castiel Valerius sat at the highest seat, his golden eyes scrutinizing every movement.

Beside him stood Grand Duke Marcel, his ever-loyal right hand.

Kael strode forward, unbowed, unafraid.

"Kael," Castiel's voice was calm, but laced with iron. "Do you know why I called you here?"

Kael met his gaze, a smirk tugging at his lips. "To ask where my loyalties lie?"

The Emperor's fingers drummed on the armrest. "To remind you where they should."

A silence stretched between them, but Kael did not break it. He waited, forcing Castiel to fill the void.

The Emperor's eyes narrowed. "You have been making… allies. The nobles whisper your name, the people adore you. Even my Empress seems intrigued."

Kael's smirk deepened, but he didn't respond. He let the weight of those words settle.

Castiel finally stood, descending the steps of his throne. "Let us not pretend, Kael. You are dangerous."

Kael chuckled. "And yet, you keep me close."

"Because I recognize power." The Emperor's voice hardened. "I am giving you one chance. Serve me, completely, and I will reward you beyond imagination."

Kael tilted his head. "And if I refuse?"

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Castiel's golden gaze bore into him. "Then I will erase you."

A warning. A challenge.

Kael smiled. "Try."

Marcel tensed. Velka's fingers twitched toward her dagger.

But the Emperor… he only smirked.

"You remind me of myself," Castiel finally said. "That is why you are still breathing."

Kael's gaze darkened. "Then I should warn you, Castiel… men like us? We do not serve."

He turned, walking toward the exit without waiting for permission.

As he stepped out, he could feel Castiel's gaze on his back—but he did not look back.

The game had begun.

Hours later, in Kael's private estate, he sat in his study, a glass of wine untouched before him. Three paths stretched before him.

1. Ally with the Empress – A dangerous but strategic move. Eleanor was intelligent, ambitious, and knew how to wield power. But could she be trusted?

2. Side with the Emperor – A less likely path. Castiel had power, but he also saw Kael as a threat, not a true ally.

3. Carve his own throne – A rebellion. A war. A chance to reshape the entire Empire under his rule.

The flames in the hearth crackled as Kael closed his eyes, thinking.

One thing was certain… the Empire would not remain the same for long.

And Kael?

He was about to make his first move.

To be continued....
