Chapter 465: Chapter 462: Reserve a Spot

Chapter Two isn’t ready yet, just marking a spot here

Will revise before 1 a.m.

How, how can you tell?

Leonardo watched as Bi Fang removed the second hand from the watch, rubbed it a few times on his hair, and then floated it on a leaf in the water, pointing to the still direction, declaring that it was north-south.

What north-south?

What thing?

[I know, this is the Lorenz theorem!]

[The one talking about the Lorenz theorem, I leisurely type out a question mark.]

[It’s magnetization, isn’t it? Didn’t you attend school? It should be the same principle as a compass, but this is temporary.]

“The principle is actually very simple; it’s the operating principle of a compass, but one is permanent, the other is temporary,” explained Bi Fang as he picked up the leaf from the puddle, dried it off, and then put the second hand back onto the watch, securing the dial.

“Repeatedly rubbing a piece of iron wire, or a sewing needle, in one direction against silk or hair, do any of you recall playing with a plastic ruler rubbed on hair to pick up paper scraps when you were in school?

This is based on the same idea; the wire becomes magnetized and when suspended, it can point towards the Arctic.

It’s analogous to placing a magnet bar at the Earth’s center, with the magnetic North Pole near the geographic South Pole, and the magnetic South Pole near the geographic North Pole. The magnetic poles don’t coincide perfectly with the geographic poles, creating a magnetic declination, yet for discerning direction, it’s already sufficient.

The magnetism produced this way won’t be very strong; after a while, you’ll need to rub it again to enhance its magnetism.

If you have a battery with a voltage of 2 volts or more, you could use electric current to magnetize the metal. You’ll also need a short piece of wire, preferably coated with insulating material.”

[I know the game with picking up paper scraps, I play with it often, Dog’s head.jpg]

[No way, no way, surely everyone has played with a plastic ruler to pick up paper scraps, right?]

[But what if you don’t have a watch? Not everyone carries around a piece of iron wire, right?]

Leonardo raised the same suspicion. Indeed, what if there is no watch? Or what if it’s a digital watch?

This method still has its limitations.

He wanted to learn a more universal, widespread method from Bi Fang.

“Without a watch’s second hand, you could also use a thin, flat razor blade to indicate direction since it’s composed of two kinds of metals bonded together. By carefully rubbing the blade on the palm of your hand, you can endow it with magnetism, then hang it to achieve the same effect.”

“If you don’t have any of these and you’re truly lost, unable to make a phone call, then you can dismantle your cellphone; surely it must have what you need inside. I assume everyone always carries a cellphone, right? Or a flashlight, any electronic device should work.”

Leonardo wanted to ask more, but Bi Fang immediately stopped him, “Forget it, under what circumstances would a person have absolutely no equipment on them, be unable to see plants, the sun, or even the terrain?”

The audience chuckled knowingly.

“Moreover, sewing needles or paper clips are essentials for outdoor exploration; do you really not have them?”

Leonardo scratched his head, “I brought a water bottle, flashlight, knife, water purification tablets, and a first aid kit, that’s about it… Anything else?”

Bi Fang couldn’t be bothered to say much more; after all, the other party was just an amateur and probably prepared these items based on intuition. Having water purification tablets indicated a decent awareness of the outdoors.

“In the basic wilderness survival toolkit, cutting tools are the most frequently used in urgent situations.”

“Apart from that, you also need a small knife, waterproof matches, candles, fishing line, various types of fish hooks, two small bait items, iron wire for setting traps, water purification tablets, a whistle, rope, paper clips or sewing needles, medical tape, adhesive bandages (band-aids), dental floss (sturdy silk thread), a compass, tweezers, acetaminophen (pain reliever), and disinfectant alcohol.”

“Put all of these items into a small container. This container can also be used as a small pot to boil water in an emergency. Seal it and keep it dry. Make sure to pack your survival toolkit in your backpack or clothes pocket before setting off every time.”

[Got it, got it, placing the order now, I’ll keep it in the bag for future use.]

[You don’t actually think you’ll have a chance to use it, do you?]

[What if one day you get lost in the forest, huh? Dog’s head.jpg]

[Others go on expeditions with full gear, ×, Master Fang goes exploring in just a pair of shorts, √]

This was the first time Bi Fang had spoken so thoroughly in front of everyone about what to prepare for an expedition, and they took note of everything immediately.

“Basically, I’ve mentioned all methods for identifying direction, with the exception of a very few, which have very limited applicability, such as ant’s nests always being oriented north-south; what I’ve shared is more than enough.” Bi Fang did not dwell too much on this topic and continued forward.

As he walked, he said, “Having a rough direction is not enough. Many times, you might already be lost after turning around, because the surroundings are too similar. Therefore, before progressing any distance, you need to identify a geographical feature along the way to use as a marker.”

“This means you have to find a geographical feature on the ground, like a tree, make sure it aligns with the direction you’re heading, and walk towards it. Then you repeat this process again and again until you reach your destination.”

“Ant’s nests are always oriented north-south?” Leonardo caught up swiftly and asked incredulously.

“Yes, this is a testament to biological structural intelligence. Both ant and termite nests have a ‘mound’ or ‘thin blade-shaped’ structure, and they are definitely oriented north-south, with the entrance facing south. This way, they get sunlight during winter and avoid direct sunlight in summer.”

Leonardo looked astonished: “You know so much!”

“How can you even call yourself competent if you know nothing? Once you understand the purpose and name of every plant, the habits and vulnerabilities of every animal, how to make and use every tool, and the origins and trends of every terrain, you will no longer fear the wilderness.”

“Have you reached that level now?”

“Me? I’ve still got a long way to go.”

Bi Fang crossed through the dense forest and stepped onto a rock, the sound of running water suddenly grew louder.

A stream no more than two to three meters wide appeared before everyone’s eyes.

Leonardo’s face brightened with joy, his pale complexion regaining some color, they had really found it!

He hurried to the stream, scooped up some water eagerly, the stream’s origins unknown as it gathered flowing through rocks and sediment, with no visible impurities, clear and transparent.

However, cautious from past experiences, Leonardo didn’t dare drink it right away; he took out his water bottle, filled it, and dropped in a couple of water purification tablets.

[Although it’s been said many times before, I still have to shout out now, Master Fang is awesome!]

[Truly awesome!]

Every step is taken with utmost care; if he says he’ll find a water source, he certainly finds it.

If he says he’ll find the direction, he definitely finds it.

How could such a man not inspire confidence?
