Chapter 221: The Cavern Village Nears Completion (1)
Another week has passed, making this the third week since Aoni returned to his Territory from Terra, and the Cavern's overhaul was nearly complete.
The Ceiling moss had expanded drastically, now covering a little over 9000 square feet; the houses were set up and ready to move into, and the Oxygen levels had reached a point that he no longer had to fear sealing the final exit and cutting the Cavern off from the outside world. Several empty buildings had been constructed on the Upper Ring, including a small general store, a crafting building, and a blacksmith. There were two bars, one located in the west district and the other in the east district.
A small playground had been established in the northern district, where Aoni had painstakingly covered the floor with very soft, upgraded grass, which added to the Oxygen content in the Cavern.
On top of that, he'd made some basic playground structures, such as swings, a tall winding slide, a jungle gym, which Glacia went totally bonkers over, and a seesaw.
It wasn't much, but it basically looked like a rustic version of an elementary school playground, which was exactly what the Lad was going for. The moment Glacia was let loose on it, he knew it was a good idea.
Sure, he had to keep a careful eye on the floof, but given that all the playground equipment had points added to it and was reinforced with E+ durability, it wasn't exactly an easy task to break it, even for him.
The Southern District was left vacated for future growth and, for the most part, barren, but that was fine for now, considering he'd run out of houses.
Running the entire length of the upper ring was a cobblestone sidewalk, large enough for a sedan to safely drive around, along with a large picket fence spanning the entirety of the upper ring's edge, serving the purpose of not only deterring people from doing something dumb but adding a little safety net which would prevent accidents from occurring, after all, it was a couple of hundred-foot drop to the lower ring from the upper.
Speaking of the lower ring, as designed, the lake was being utilized for several tasks; one quarter had its shallows barricaded off with floating buoys and nets, quartering it off as an entertainment space for swimming or picnics.
Aoni had done his best to transform the area into a beach of sorts, even going so far as to smash up a shit ton of rock and create something similar to sand so that it was soft on bare feet around the shoreline in that area.
Alongside several wooden picnic benches and grilling stations, it appeared to be a picture-perfect spot for family relaxation.
Choosing to keep it away from the hustle and bustle of the work environment, this section was located on the southern side of the lake and, as such, was a cavern. This meant there were no homes nearby, making it relatively quiet.
Not far from the beach was a wooden dock that stretched out sixty feet into the water, outside of the buoy nets. This was something Aoni had added on a whim. Once the water cleared of gore left over from the battle and there were no longer any bugs swimming up, he noticed the presence of hundreds of species of fish populating the water.
The dock, well, that was more so for him, considering he loved fishing as a kid. As long as it wasn't swarmed with people, it could be regarded as another source of food for his residents, who could try their luck at catching something tasty with their own hands.
Now, the western and eastern districts of the lower ring were a bit different from anything else he had done so far. Up until this point in the construction, he'd kept the basic layout of the Cavern relatively the same as it originally was; sure, some places were flattened, and plenty of new structures popped up all over; however, in these two areas existed two canals, that ran from the lake all the way to the wall, with each having a small footbridge over top of them, each having their utility.
In the case of the Western Canal, its goal was to provide water to the western farming area; that's right, Aoni created a primitive irrigation system.
Of course, making a giant underground farm was by no means an easy task. It had taken several days just to set up the soil as it needed to be dug up off the side of the mountain and carried down to the Cavern. Still, over the course of a few days, as he entered Miner mode, slamming a pickaxe into the ground like a good little drone, Nyria and Glacia dug up dirt from outside and filled dozens of wooden crates.
The result was acceptable to Aoni, as he'd created a modified version of the garden boxes on a large scale; however, unlike those quarantined spaces for planting flowers, these four massive boxes, bigger than each house, were positioned over several matching holes dug into the rock and fed by the lake, making it possible to grow just about any suitable plant found outside the mountain.
Well, so long as they didn't require direct light from the DayCelest, but even then, with how many Energia Crystals coated the place, it wouldn't have been much of a problem in the first place, with the only environmental detriments being it was warmer in the cave than the artic climate outside.
Now, in the case of what was planted in the farming plots, each one had a certain crop: one for a species of wheat, one for potatoes, one for miscellaneous vegetables, and one specifically for special fruits found in Aoni's territory.
If the canal leading to the western district was for irrigation, then you guessed it, the one on the eastern side was for DRINKING!
Along the canal were several stations, similar to wells or water pumps, where people could go, collect water, and bring it home for daily use.
Through these established mechanics, it could be determined how the Village would perform, but would things change over time? Indeed, this system truly flourished when many people were engaged in chores or going about their daily lives, establishing a self-sustaining village; however, that didn't mean Aoni was incapable of working the farmland alone.
Eh, maybe 'solo' isn't the best term; after all, with Nyria-Airways hard at work, it was perfectly reasonable that she could tend to the crops by scattering Crystal dust like fertilizer daily, thereby feeding the plants.
