Keystones of the Abyss

Chapter 4: The Ruins of Solvyr

The morning sun barely managed to shine through the thick, swirling mists surrounding the floating islands of Solvyr. These ancient ruins, perched high above the ground, looked as though they had been frozen in time. Crumbling towers jutted out from jagged rocks, covered in glowing moss and strange, shimmering vines. Kian and Nessa stood on the edge of a cliff, staring at the huge gap separating them from the ruins.

"Well, that looks welcoming," Kian muttered, shading his mismatched eyes against the weak sunlight.

Nessa tightened the straps of her pack, her face unreadable. "The shard led us here for a reason. If the first Veilkeeper's essence is in there, we don't have a choice."

Kian tilted his head, inspecting the rickety bridge made of wooden planks and fraying ropes that stretched across the chasm. "Do you think this bridge is... sturdy?"

"It's been here for centuries. If it could hold the people who lived here, it can hold us."

"Sure, but what if they were all tiny?" Kian grinned, but Nessa's sharp glare quickly silenced him.

As they crossed the bridge, the creaking ropes and swaying planks made Kian's nerves spike. The swirling mist below gave the eerie impression of an endless void, and each gust of wind felt like it might knock him off. Halfway across, one of the planks broke under Kian's weight.

"Whoa!" He stumbled, grabbing the rope for balance. "Okay, maybe this bridge isn't as solid as you thought."

"Stop complaining and keep moving!" Nessa called, already close to the other side.

They finally made it across without further trouble and stepped onto a wide stone platform decorated with intricate patterns. Strange symbols, faintly glowing, lined the edges of the platform, shifting as if they were alive.

"This place feels... wrong," Kian said, running his hand over one of the symbols. It pulsed faintly under his touch, sending a strange warmth up his arm.

Nessa crouched to study the carvings. "These symbols are part of a protective system. It's like the ruins are alive, trying to keep intruders out."

"Wonderful. A haunted ruin. Exactly what I needed."

As they moved further into the ruins, the surroundings grew more surreal. Pieces of stone floated in midair, connected by shimmering bridges of light. Ghostly images of the city's past inhabitants flickered into view, only to disappear moments later. The air grew heavy, charged with ancient magic that pressed against their skin.

At the center of the ruins was the portal they had seen in the shard's vision. It was massive, surrounded by stone pillars covered in glowing symbols. The colors swirling inside the portal shifted constantly, almost like it was alive.

"Is this it?" Kian asked, staring at the portal. "Do we just walk through?"

"Wait," Nessa said tensely, pointing at the base of the portal. A faint shadow was starting to form.

The shadow grew quickly, taking the shape of a figure cloaked in black mist. It stood tall, its face hidden by a hood, and its arms ended in long, blade-like appendages.

"Another Void creature," Nessa whispered, her hands glowing as she prepared a spell.

"Great. I was starting to miss these guys," Kian quipped, drawing his dagger.

The creature attacked without warning, its blade-like arms slashing through the air at inhuman speed. Kian ducked and rolled, barely avoiding the strike, while Nessa fired a bolt of magic that hit the creature in the chest. It staggered but didn't fall.

"We have to work together!" Nessa shouted, dodging another swing from the creature.

"I'm open to suggestions!" Kian yelled, slashing at the creature's side. His dagger barely made a mark, passing through its shadowy form like smoke.

"Distract it! I'll try to trap it!"

Kian kept the creature occupied, dodging and taunting it while Nessa chanted a spell. Her voice was steady, even as glowing threads began forming around her, weaving into a complex web.

"Now!" she shouted.

Kian jumped out of the way as Nessa's spell took hold. The glowing threads shot toward the creature, wrapping tightly around it and pinning it in place. The creature thrashed and roared, but the bindings held.

"Finish it!" Nessa cried.

Kian raised the glowing staff they had found in the Hall of Threads. It pulsed in his hands, as if it knew this was the moment. With a loud shout, he drove the staff into the creature's chest.

The reaction was instant. Light erupted from the staff, engulfing the creature in a blinding flash. When the light faded, the creature was gone, leaving behind only a faint wisp of smoke.

Before they could catch their breath, the portal began glowing even brighter. A figure stepped out—a woman clad in golden armor, radiating power. She carried a staff like Kian's, its tip glowing with the same light.

"You have proven your worth," she said, her voice strong and melodic. "I am Thaliel, the First Veilkeeper. The Void's forces will grow stronger, but together, we can stop them."

Kian groaned, leaning on his staff. "Great. Another quest. Do I at least get a snack first?"

Thaliel smiled faintly. "Your journey is far from over, but you won't face it alone."

As the portal's light dimmed, Kian and Nessa felt the weight of their mission. The battle against the Void had only just begun, but for the first time, they had a glimmer of hope.
