Chapter 14: The Shattered Horizon
The air crackled with tension as the hooded man took a step forward, his dark blade gleaming ominously in the dim light of the chamber. His eyes burned with malice, and the weight of his presence made the very walls seem to close in.
Erynn gripped the keystone tighter, its warmth flooding her senses. She could feel its power surging, but it was unstable—wild, untamed. "We end this now," she muttered, more to herself than anyone else.
Kian flicked his daggers, his eyes flashing with excitement. "I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready to dance."
Kaelith, her golden eyes narrowing, stepped forward, her fingers already crackling with dark energy. "I'll keep him distracted. You two, get to the obelisk. It's our only chance."
Alaric nodded sharply, his sword held at the ready. "Stay close, Erynn."
The hooded man's lips curled into a smile. "You think you can stop the inevitable? The Order's plan is already in motion. You're too late."
With a sudden, swift motion, he lunged forward, his dark blade aimed directly at Erynn. She barely had time to react, raising the keystone in a desperate attempt to block the strike. The keystone flared, sending a pulse of energy through the air that stopped the blade inches from her face.
The force of the impact reverberated through the chamber, throwing Erynn off balance. She stumbled back, but Kaelith was there in an instant, her dark tendrils of magic wrapping around the hooded man's arm, pulling him away.
"Go!" Kaelith yelled.
Without hesitation, Erynn sprinted toward the obelisk, the keystone glowing fiercely in her hand. Alaric was right behind her, his sword raised in a defensive stance, ready for anything.
The hooded man snarled, breaking free of Kaelith's magic with a violent twist of his arm. "You think you can control it? You can't even understand its true power!"
He raised his hand, and the chamber trembled as a wave of dark energy surged toward them. The force of the blast sent a shockwave through the room, knocking Alaric off his feet. Erynn, however, managed to keep her balance, her focus entirely on the obelisk.
The keystone pulsed again, its light blinding as Erynn pressed it to the black stone. The ground beneath her feet shook, and the runes etched into the walls began to glow with an ominous red hue. The obelisk groaned as though it were alive, the dark energy swirling around it intensifying.
"We need more power!" Erynn shouted, her voice strained. She could feel the keystone's power beginning to destabilize, threatening to consume everything around her.
Kaelith was back at her side, her hands crackling with energy. "I'll help! Just hold it steady!"
Together, they pushed the keystone into the obelisk. The chamber erupted with blinding light, and for a moment, everything went silent.
Then came the roar. It was deafening—a screech of pure, raw power as the obelisk cracked open, its dark magic leaking out like a torrent. The hooded man screamed, his body writhing in agony as the dark energy was ripped from him, drawn into the keystone.
Erynn's body shook, the keystone's power overwhelming her, but she held on, her determination driving her forward. The room was collapsing around them, walls crumbling, the very foundation of the fortress beginning to collapse.
"You can't win!" the hooded man cried out one last time, his voice filled with rage.
But it was too late.
With a final surge of energy, the keystone exploded with light, consuming the entire chamber in a flash so bright it left the world blind for a moment.
When the light faded, there was nothing left but silence—and the ruins of the Abyssal Order's fortress, crumbling into the depths below.
Erynn stood at the center of the destruction, panting heavily, her hands still trembling from the intensity of the keystone's power. Her companions were scattered around her, dazed but alive.
Kaelith was the first to speak, her voice filled with a strange mix of awe and amusement. "Well, that was certainly something."
Alaric, shaking his head, slowly got to his feet. "What now?"
Erynn looked at the crumbling fortress, her heart heavy. "Now, we rebuild. And we make sure the Order doesn't rise again."
Kian grinned. "Sounds like a plan."
But as they made their way out of the ruins, Erynn couldn't shake the feeling that this wasn't the end—not by a long shot. The keystone had done its job, but the world had changed. And in the shadows, something else was stirring.
Something far darker.
