Kali Yuga: War of Worlds

Chapter 3: Origins: The End of the Known

The great tragedy was a mass destruction phenomenon that destroyed nearly 20% of the world's population and unleashed upon the rest horrors, like never seen before.

The slits which oozed out the viscous acid, was a warp gate connecting two dimensions, the underworld and the above world.

The slit in America was not the only one of its kind. There were others that had appeared simultaneously all over the world. The western nations were among the worst affected. Soon demons started coming out of this slits. But they were not what Hollywood had portrayed them to be in their creative works.

Each demon had a horn. They wore what seemed like fashionable loin clothes, and jewelry that seemed to have been made from the human bones.

Some had an eye, some more than two, some had two hands, while some had more than a hundred. There was a clear hierarchy amongst them.

The higher the rank of the demon, the better he was dressed. The highest rank demon that had come out of the slit, was as tall as a twenty storey building, wore a massive girdle, earrings, bangles and anklets and elaborate neck pieces, all made of gold.

Their hair was matted and tied with human bones and skull. They dressed in silk dhotis with a piece of silk cloth over their shoulders.

But they had the most hideous of faces. They had protruding canines, curved at the end, and bulging red and murderous eyes, with which they could set almost anything to fire. They had large horns curved at the sides of their heads and carried a weapon, a swing of which was enough to wipe out an entire city.

The demons spoke an ancient language and they swarmed out of the slits holding weapons like swords, maces, spears, bows and arrows, riding black horses that breathed fire, or even dark elephants that had huge curled tusks and caused the earth to quake with each step.

Before the countries summoned their armies, half of it was already laid to waste.

But even with their armies, the countries could make no difference. Humanity tasted the futility of the modern ammunition, for the first time in their life and it left them in despair.

The demons slaughtered humans indiscriminately, feasted on their flesh, violated the women, and left nothing salvageable in their wake.

It was the very definition of total annihilation of humankind.

When modern warfare had failed, the religious organisations stepped in to protect the lives of the innocent.

The Church called for a crusade and launched a counter only to be slaughtered.

The weapons of the demons were not ordinary. They could summon spells through them and cast long distance attacks that would obliterate the enemy even before they got anywhere near them.

The hindu temples abroad were laid to waste with what seemed like greater animosity. The demons seemed to harbour a deeper hatred for the Hindu Gods. The description of the demons matched with the ones recorded in the Hindu myths and folktales, in particular and the eastern folktales in general.

Over a period of a few months, as the western nations' attempts to subdue the demons kept on failing, it had become clear that the eastern nations were the ones that could provide a real solution to this unprecedented crisis.

However, it was not exactly smooth sailing for the easterners either.
