Chapter 17: Forbidden Abyss – Descent into the Vampire’s Domain
The Uncontrollable Urge for Exploration
Days had passed since their triumphant return, yet Li Ran's restless desire for adventure remained unquenched. Despite enjoying peaceful moments with Darkmoon Dragon Princess, his mind drifted back to the Forbidden Abyss, drawn to the mysteries that lay beyond the third layer.
One morning, unable to suppress his curiosity any longer, Li Ran and Darkmoon Dragon Princess set off to find Neo.
Upon locating him in the Adventurers' Guild, Li Ran eagerly proposed their next expedition into the fourth layer.
Neo's reaction was immediate—and utterly unenthusiastic.
His expression twisted into sheer reluctance as he raised both hands in protest.
"No, no, no. Absolutely not! The unexplored regions of the fourth layer are incredibly dangerous! No sane person would willingly go there!"
Li Ran, however, was not easily deterred. He clasped his hands together in a pleading gesture, his eyes filled with determination.
"Come on, Neo! We need you! This will be a great chance to gather more critical information!"
Neo scoffed, crossing his arms.
"A 'great chance' for who?! I like my life, thank you very much!"
Just as Neo was about to dismiss them outright, a sudden chill crawled down his spine.
Darkmoon Dragon Princess, standing beside Li Ran, had remained silent the entire time—until now.
Her crimson eyes gleamed with an icy sharpness, her gaze piercing straight into Neo's soul. A silent yet deadly pressure loomed over him, causing beads of cold sweat to form on his forehead.
Neo gulped. "F-Fine! I'll do it! Just—stop looking at me like that!"
"Good choice," Darkmoon Dragon Princess murmured, a satisfied smirk playing on her lips.
Still trembling, Neo sighed in defeat. "At least give me three days to prepare. I need supplies—speed potions, cloaking cloaks, maybe even a teleportation scroll for emergencies."
Li Ran grinned victoriously, patting Neo on the back. "Three days it is!"
And so, with the countdown to their next grand expedition set, Li Ran spent the next few days enjoying quality time with Darkmoon Dragon Princess, indulging in peaceful dates and well-earned moments of tranquility.
Into the Abyss Once More
On the appointed day, the trio stood before the gaping maw of the Forbidden Abyss once again.
Neo adjusted his gear anxiously. "Alright, remember the plan: in, map out as much as possible, and get out before we trigger something we can't handle."
With Li Ran and Darkmoon Dragon Princess leading the charge, the team quickly breezed through the first three floors using the maps Neo had previously drawn.
First Layer: Slimes and Goblins – Easily dispatched with minimal effort.
Second Layer: Chimeras – Quick precision strikes ended their resistance.
Third Layer: Hellhounds – A few skirmishes, but nothing they couldn't handle.
With fluid movements and flawless teamwork, they swiftly cut through lingering threats, making their way deeper into uncharted territory—the dreaded fourth layer.
The Haunted Chapel & Bloodstained Cemetery
The moment they stepped foot onto the fourth layer, an eerie chill crept over them.
They stood before the ruins of a shattered cathedral, its stained-glass windows shattered, its once-grand spires crumbling into decay. Beyond it stretched a bloodstained cemetery, gravestones cracked and tilted, some freshly disturbed as if the dead had crawled out from their graves.
"This place reeks of death and something… older," Darkmoon Dragon Princess whispered, her crimson eyes scanning the darkness.
Just as she spoke, a shadow flickered at the edge of their vision.
They were no longer alone.
Vampire Maidens: The First Assault
From the shadows of the ruined chapel, figures emerged—Vampire Maidens.
Their pale, almost deathly white skin gleamed under the dim glow of the abyss. Their faces, once beautiful, were now contorted with hunger and madness. Their mouths stretched into grotesque fang-lined maws, their elongated clawed fingers twitching with predatory intent.
Then, they struck.
Darkmoon Dragon Princess moved first. Before the vampiric creatures could reach Li Ran, she flicked her wrist—"Moonshadow Bind"—and black chains shot from the ground, ensnaring one of the maidens mid-lunge.
Li Ran followed immediately. With a single swing of Boundary Severing Blade, he cleaved through another, his Dimensional Slash severing the creature's torso before it could retaliate.
Within three swift exchanges, the remaining Vampire Maidens collapsed into ash, their corrupted existence erased by overwhelming might.
But their battle had only just begun.
The Dead Rise: Ghouls & Zombies
As they stepped deeper into the cemetery, a low groan rumbled beneath them.
From the broken soil, rotting hands burst forth, skeletal fingers clawing at the air. Ghouls and Zombies dragged themselves out of the earth, their hollow eyes locked onto the intruders.
Darkmoon Dragon Princess swept her staff forward—"Moonshadow Cleave." A black crescent blade tore through the horde, reducing several undead to dust.
Li Ran leaped into the air, unleashing "Spatial Severance." His blade carved through four zombies at once, their bodies collapsing lifelessly into the grave they had crawled from.
The rest fell within mere four strikes, their undead wails drowned by the sound of shattering bones.
The Vampiric Elite: Strategic Warfare
Suddenly, the battlefield shifted.
Unlike the previous foes, a group of High Vampires emerged, their movements coordinated.
They were faster, stronger, and, most importantly—smarter.
No longer did they lunge mindlessly. They encircled Li Ran and Darkmoon Dragon Princess, moving as one.
One attacked from the front with a piercing thrust.
Another blurred behind with a shadowy strike.
A third conjured a fiery spell, cutting off their escape.
A true battle had begun.
Li Ran didn't hesitate. He twisted his body mid-air, slashing through the incoming spell with his Ultimate Dimensional Slash, the very fabric of reality splitting apart.
Darkmoon Dragon Princess spun, whispering "Abyssal Veil." A black mist engulfed the battlefield, blinding the vampires momentarily.
A rapid exchange of six brutal attacks followed. Blades clashed, spells detonated, shadows flickered—and in the end, the last High Vampire let out a final, agonized shriek before collapsing into dust.
A tense silence fell over the battlefield.
Neo wiped his brow. "That... was intense."
Li Ran exhaled. "And yet, we're still not done."
The Castle Beneath the Abyss
At the deepest point of the fourth layer, a massive stone fortress loomed.
The ancient castle sat atop an unnatural crimson lake, its gates sealed by blood-red chains pulsing with dark energy.
Neo took a step back. "I have a very bad feeling about this."
Darkmoon Dragon Princess narrowed her eyes. "That's because this... is not just another part of the labyrinth."
Li Ran tightened his grip on Boundary Severing Blade, the thrill of a new challenge igniting in his veins.
"Whatever's inside… it's waiting for us."
The trio stepped forward—ready to face whatever lay beyond the gates of the abyssal castle.
And so, the next trial awaited.
