Chapter 22 - Second Preliminaries (1)
As soon as I heard Luche’s words, I opened my friend list.
[Friend List] [Friend Requests] [Block List]
[System: You have 1,182 unconfirmed friend requests.]
It doesn’t feel like it’s been long since I last sorted this out. But it’s already piled up this much.
A daunting number exceeding a thousand. This is why I usually don’t check friend requests.
No matter how much I delete, it doesn’t decrease, so I have no choice but to ignore it.
Recently, I’ve been the talk of the town quite often.
There was that video incident… and just today, I killed many streamers to vent my feelings.
There must be plenty of people angry because their favorite streamer died.
While many viewers enjoy it, not everyone does.
But well, what can I do?
Field PK is a play that I do while bearing the system risks too.
There’s a reason why even major guilds prefer war over PK.
That’s why they stake their lives on justification, and why they need me even while running their own enforcement teams.
Sometimes karma hits because of this…
But I’ve managed somehow until now.
[Friend request from StrangeForestElderin. Y/N]
[Rejected.]
[ElderinGuard…]
[Rejected…]
[DongtanMi…]
[Rejected…]
Since I thought of it, I decided to delete all the useless friend requests.
As I mechanically pressed the reject button for a while,
I saw a request from someone I have good memories of.
[Friend request from MountainBird. Y/N]
[Accepted.]
A halfling I met during a previous party hunt.
In my memory, they were the bard of the herbivore guild who was my “Fan No. 1”.
You sent a friend request. It would have been nice if you had said something
No. Maybe you wanted to but couldn’t?
After all, I haven’t met MountainBird again since they died then.
While the number of people who can fight me in the field is limited, anyone can send a friend request.
That’s why quite a lot of people send them out of curiosity.
Maybe it’s even out of shallow revenge.
Of course, this characteristic applies to whispers too.
If I don’t block them, I can’t use the whisper function itself, so I’ve set it so that only party members or those on my friend list can send them.
‘I should go and kill them next time. It’s starting to get inconvenient.’
It was fine until now.
After all, necessary friend additions happen when I know about it.
I just had to accept the most recent request.
But now that this has happened once, I can’t just let it slide.
Won’t it lessen if I go and kill a few people?
If it still doesn’t decrease, there’s nothing I can do.
Anyway, as I kept pressing the reject button, there were some noticeable names.
[Friend request from Elderin. Y/N]
[Friend request from Q Prime Traveler*. Y/N]
Elderin was the streamer I killed today.
And Traveler seemed to be definitely the person I know.
The * next to the nickname means it’s like a verification mark from the game company.
Since Traveler said he sent it, that’s understandable.
But what’s with this Elderin person? I don’t think they’d have good feelings towards me.
After a brief contemplation, I made my decision.
[Accepted.]
But, now that I’ve accepted, you know.
The friend requests were probably sent a while ago, and there’s no guarantee these two would be logged in right now.
[Elderin(Online) – Location: Private]
[MountainBird(Offline) – Last login: 5 hours ago]
[Traveler(Offline) – Last login: 3 hours ago]
As expected, both MountainBird and Traveler were offline.
Only Elderin, whose reason for sending I don’t know, was online.
It seemed they returned as soon as the connection restriction was lifted.
This feels a bit strange. It’s awkward to start a conversation.
Won’t they ask on their own when they notice later?
With that thought, as soon as I closed the friend window, whispers started pouring in as if possessed.
[Whisper from Elderin]
– Wow
– Wow
– Wow
– You accepted!
– Is it okay to talk for a moment now?
– I’ll keep it short
– Short
– It really won’t take long
An attitude like a credit card salesperson.
I calmly adjusted the voice channel.
“Well, go ahead. You’re not streaming, are you?”
* * *
Even when searching the broadcasting platform, Elderin’s stream didn’t show up.
I should have checked before accepting. It’s been so long since I’ve done this that I didn’t think of it.
It seems my body is still unwell. Good thing I didn’t queue for matching.
[Whisper from Elderin]
– I was just gathering alone!
– If I do gathering on stream, it gets crowded next time and becomes difficult
– Actually, this happened last time…
Ah, is this what being a streamer is like?
They have so much to say. Once I started listening, the chat kept coming endlessly.
Thanks to this, my heart seemed to be strangely reassured.
At least they didn’t seem to have ill feelings towards me.
Though I wasn’t particularly interested in their story itself.
“So, I’d like to hear what business you have with me. Actually, I don’t think our first meeting was very pleasant.”
– Ah, I’m not really bothered by that! It’s okay!
– It’s not the first time I’ve died, and strangely, I didn’t feel bad about it 🙂
– Did that sound a bit weird? Rather, I became interested in you, Gawol, and even sent this friend request.
– Oh, about the broadcast replay, I…
They didn’t feel bad?
Well… that could be possible.
There are all kinds of people in the world.
I wrote “person with strange tastes” in Elderin’s memo in the friend window.
I should be careful not to get too close.
– Anyway! The Arena phase changes tomorrow, right?
– I heard spectating becomes possible from tomorrow. If it’s okay, can I spectate you on my broadcast?
– Not just me alone, I’ll invite the most skilled person I can recruit.
– Probably not as good as you, Gawol, though.
The basic progression method for the Final Phase is single elimination.
It was a famous method known as a tournament.
But it’s impossible to coordinate the game times for over a thousand participants individually.
So, matches are conducted through random matching with opponents who have the same number of wins.
If it becomes difficult to proceed with matches by matching alone, the game company intervenes to set the schedule.
As a result, you need to succeed in 5 consecutive wins to advance to the main tournament.
While spectating matches is possible, it’s impossible to know when and how many people will compete.
Without setting up an appointment in advance, it’s practically impossible to broadcast the desired player.
Elderin’s request must be asking me to let them know my match times.
While they may not be a big corporation, they’re not such a small-time streamer that they can’t get any attention.
For me, who can’t conduct broadcasts myself, it was a welcome offer.
“Well, I’m grateful for the offer, but I’m not sure if it’s okay.”
But there was a reason I couldn’t readily accept.
I can’t broadcast.
But that doesn’t mean I can’t appear on other people’s broadcasts.
So I tried to attempt it before… but couldn’t realize it.
The reason was that I had too many enemies.
– Oh, did someone else already arrange to cover you?
“No. This is the first offer I’ve received.”
– Then are you reluctant to be shown on broadcast?
“It’s not that either. Actually, since anyone can spectate, it’s not really something that needs my permission.”
To target me, you need to bring multiple users with good specs.
I’m just an individual, so if there’s continuous friction, guilds would have to bear losses too.
But not everyone who has a relationship with me can do that.
This is also why I operate without even a common guild.
If it becomes difficult to target me, they’ll naturally start targeting those around me.
I can’t stop working to earn money, so of course, I had to work alone.
This problem doesn’t change even if I team up with powerful guilds or streamers.
Such guys usually have connections with certain factions.
It makes it impossible to take jobs from the opposite side.
The disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
“It’s not me, but Elderin who won’t be okay. As you know, I’ve made enemies in many places. Since they can’t kill me, quite a few might try to kill you instead.”
After saying it, I realize how ridiculous it sounds.
After all, I’m the one who most recently killed Elderin.
Who’s worrying about whom?
Still, deceiving others isn’t my style.
I don’t like the way of speaking that goes “I didn’t lie” and such.
– Ah, that’s okay.
“It’ll still be difficult… What?”
– Can’t I just not leave the town?
– I could even not leave the residence at all.
My mind went blank at Elderin’s response.
– After all, my main focus is on life skills and customization.
– If necessary, should I completely redecorate my housing this time?
– It’s been 3 months since I last did the interior, so it’s about time to change with the season, right?
– If I’m okay with it, can I get your permission?
Come to think of it, that’s right.
Life content in this game.
Users who focus on customization and those who focus on PVP hardly overlap in their activity areas.
While other life skills might be different, customization is a complete waste of time for PVP users.
If it becomes difficult to go out into the field, just don’t go out.
If you can’t improve your specs, just spend time decorating.
Elderin, who can still broadcast my PVP while doing this – was like the only puzzle piece.
“Uh… Uhh? Yes…”
– Did you just give permission?
– Then I’ll contact you again!
