Chapter 6: Mushrooms
"Micheal! Micheal! MICHEAL WAKE UP!" A familiar voice cried out, jolting him awake. Michael groggily sat up, hearing his sister calling his name repeatedly.
"Jeez, what's up, sis?" he said, opening his door.
"Don't give me that nonsense. Today is the first day of your finals, and you're already going to be late!" she scolded him. "Now hurry up and get ready."
Last night, after Michael got home, he had a long discussion with his sister. Coming up with lies wasn't easy, but he somehow managed. She had no idea he had superpowers, so she left it at that, though she now had her suspicions.
Michael rushed to take a shower. "I almost forgot about today," he muttered in a panic. Five minutes later, he emerged from his room, ready for school. He wore a watch-like device on his wrist, something he bought from his first world. Its primary function was mapping his surroundings, even if no map data was available. It could communicate with various devices and adapt to different planets and civilizations. When he hooked it up to his laptop, it copied and categorized map data, news, and other information from the internet. He wondered if he had bought a military version of the device, how it would work. However, he still had digital cash on the device but couldn't use it here on Terra.
"What's up, dude?" Trent asked as he and Michael walked to school together.
"Huh? Oh, it's nothing. I just wish I could access some money I currently have," Michael replied.
"Is that so? Don't tell me you're one of those guys who managed to make a ton of Ucoins but ended up losing their password," Trent said. Michael awkwardly laughed, making Trent think it was true. "What? Really! How much is it? Wait, no... How did you manage to lose such an amount of money?" Trent exclaimed.
"Don't worry about it; it's not important anyway," Michael said, trying to brush it off.
"Haaa. Yeah, I guess. Anyway, I've been meaning to ask—why do I get the feeling your body is different somehow, like you've gained more?" Trent asked.
"Hehe. It's nothing; I've been hitting the gym lately," Michael said.
"Whaat! There's no way you've gained that fast. Tell me, are you using some super supplement or something?" Trent pestered Michael until they arrived at school.
Today marked the beginning of the exams, starting with Mathematics P1. Thanks to the learning module, Michael found the exam easy and finished quickly. After an hour, he was able to leave the exam room. With his friends still writing, Michael decided to head home.
"Right before I forget, I'll add a calendar from Terra so I can always have the correct time," Michael muttered. He reached for his watch device and turned it on. A hologram popped up as he added his timezone to it. He was already at the front door of their apartment.
"Oh, Njabulo is back," Michael remarked, seeing his brother-in-law's back on the sofa. Michael went to his room, threw his bag on his bed, and left a note saying he might be gone for a while and might not answer his phone.
He changed into the clothes he bought previously, preparing to practice his powers. Referring to a quick guide to controlling superpowers, he sat down with a backpack containing some food. He meditated, sitting calmly, and searched for the source of his powers. As he focused, the atmosphere in his room changed. Michael's clothes billowed, and a green energy enveloped his body. Though his eyes were closed, his vision shifted from darkness to seeing strange vegetation. It looked like giant mushrooms, even taller than trees, and a road that ended at a cliff.
Suddenly, he felt as if he moved really fast, and his vision turned dark again. The air felt chilly. Michael opened his eyes and found himself in the place he had seen. "Woah! Why am I... Ahhh!" 'Thud.' He fell to the ground, realizing he had been floating for a moment. When he got up, he saw a bubble-like object towering there. Inside, things floated as if the gravity was wonky, but outside, it was fine.
"Man, that was a crazy experience," he muttered, holding his head. The mushrooms looked exactly like in his vision. He got up, steeling himself to explore this new world. "But first," Michael checked his watch, "the time here is one and a half hours slower than back on Terra," he noted.
As he walked down the cliff, he suddenly felt someone else's presence. Walking out from the mushroom forest were mushroom people, like, really mushroom people. Two of them were holding a broccoli elk—a creature that looked like a mix of broccoli and an elk. Accepting that he had traveled to another dimension, Michael didn't question it further.
"Mann! I was really hoping to get back to that planet," Michael said, wanting to retrieve the items he had bought. With a sigh, he took a quick snap of the mushroom people holding the broccoli elk on a stick and continued walking.
