Chapter 34
Chapter 34: Investigation Mission (1)
“Consume it in a quiet place where you can focus.”
That was Kanok’s advice to me on the way back from the Imperial Palace.
When taking the pill crafted from the Dragon’s Breath, external interference had to be avoided.
I stared at the blue-hued pill resting on the table. The day’s training at Azure Wings had ended, and no one was likely to visit.
I had even hung a “Do Not Disturb” sign outside my door to ensure I wouldn’t be interrupted.
Night deepened. Glancing briefly out the window, I placed the pill in my mouth. My face twisted immediately.
It was bitter, yet refreshing, as if a cool breeze had blown through my mouth. A peculiar sensation I had never experienced before.
Rolling it around with my tongue, I finally bit down. They said the pill significantly increased the consumer’s mana reserves—and they were right.
I felt a massive energy coursing down my throat, mild and obedient. The mana that flowed into my body merged naturally with my own.
The mantra of the White Dragon’s Heart arose instinctively. I had reached a point where I could operate it without conscious effort. My icy mana fused with the energy of the pill, surging through my body.
It felt like sinking beneath the surface of a calm lake. My consciousness seemed to descend into a profound depth, similar to how I felt when the tribe’s shamans encouraged me to try their pipe rituals. My senses dulled.
But my mind remained sharp.
The shamans used to describe such experiences as breaking free from the physical plane and entering the spirit realm. I had always dismissed their words as hallucination-induced nonsense.
But now I realized they weren’t entirely wrong.
The moment I became aware of myself, I found myself face-to-face with a massive wolf’s form atop a snowy plain.
The Wolf God.
The guardian deity of the White Frost Tribe, said to protect the snowy lands.
I shouted at the Wolf God. Why hadn’t it protected us that day? Why hadn’t it saved the tribe from the reincarnators?
But no sound came out.
Suddenly, a fierce wind howled. It was powerful enough to obscure everything in a whirlwind of white snow. The Wolf God’s form began to blur.
Beyond the swirling storm, I glimpsed a familiar figure—a girl with snow-white hair.
Saeran…?
The girl, radiant with unparalleled beauty, was undeniably my younger sister.
“Saeran!”
I reached out for her, crying out desperately. But no voice emerged, and my body wouldn’t move.
All I could do was watch helplessly as her figure grew faint and distant.
Then, a faint voice echoed through the storm.
-Brother.
The moment I recognized her voice, my senses returned. I felt my limbs, the air brushing my skin, and the sequential restoration of my body’s sensations, as if awakening from a deep sleep.
In the next instant, my consciousness plummeted rapidly, as though falling from the sky, until it reconnected with my physical body.
“Hah…!”
I gasped, my hands pressed against the floor as I panted heavily. Blinking, I slowly surveyed my surroundings. This wasn’t the snowy plains—it was my room in the Azure Wings Headquarters.
Everything I had just seen felt hazy, like a fleeting dream. The Wolf God’s visage, my sister’s voice, the snowy expanse—all were now beyond my grasp.
Was it a hallucination? Or the truth? There was no one here to answer my questions. The shamans from my tribe would have made a fuss over this.
Steadying my breathing, I stood. My mana reserves had grown. Not just in quantity—the quality had improved as well. My mana felt stronger and more resilient, able to achieve more with less effort.
Shing—
I drew the White Dragon Sword quietly. The blade, responding to the faint mana flowing through me, emanated a frigid aura.
My body moved fluidly as I began to dance with the sword. The sword dance, born from the snowy mountains where the white dragon descended, unfolded here across dimensions.
“I’ll believe it to be true.”
Whether it was a hallucination or not, I resolved to believe in what I had seen. My sister was with me. She was experiencing everything I saw and touched in this body.
Saeran…
Whoosh—!
As I fully engaged my mana, a fierce wind burst around me, scattering icy energy. My uniform fluttered, frost forming wherever my feet touched the ground, like delicate snowflakes settling.
***
Dawn broke.
Though I hadn’t slept, my mind and body felt more refreshed than ever, thanks to the pill’s effects.
More importantly, I now firmly acknowledged my sister’s presence. She lived with me in this body. The realization felt like walking on clouds, and a smile naturally appeared on my face.
I was in a better mood than I had been in a long time.
“You look lovely when you smile, Saeran,” I said, addressing the girl in the mirror.
There was no reply, but I felt as though I heard her voice.
“For you, I’ve learned how to apply makeup. Flora taught me and said there’s no need to overdo it since you’re already beautiful.”
Planning to apply makeup, I sighed and shook my head. Training was about to begin, and sweat and dust would ruin it anyway. There was no point in ruining a pretty face.
“I’ll show you next time,” I promised, closing the drawer before leaving my room.
Later, after breakfast, just as I was about to start the day’s training, a senior knight approached the three of us—Theo, Flora, and me—holding a document envelope.
“Saeorin, Flora, Theo. You have a mission.”
As soon as we received the envelope, we opened it to review its contents.
Basic Information
Name: Silverhill Rowan
Age: 15
Origin: Silverhill Territory
Reincarnation Details
Reincarnator Status: Suspected
Previous Life Origin: Unknown
Memory Recovery: Approximately 5 months ago
Physical and Weapon Information
Physical Condition: Recovered from illness, focusing on physical training
Primary Weapon: Sword
Additional Information: Swordsmanship has improved drastically
Conclusion
Silverhill Rowan has made a sudden recovery and shown rapid improvement in swordsmanship. Additionally, they have developed groundbreaking agricultural techniques, greatly benefiting territorial management. Given the similarity to patterns seen in past reincarnators, further investigation is warranted, and additional personnel deployment is recommended.
Additional Notes
The Silverhill family likely maintains a cooperative relationship with reincarnators, making direct cooperation with the territory unlikely. Rowan appears to have a weakness for women, suggesting that an approach using charm tactics might yield useful information.
“This is…”
“Silverhill?”
“Finally, a proper mission?”
The senior knight overseeing us addressed our group of three as we reviewed the document.
“Since this is still an investigation phase, you must proceed cautiously. If it’s confirmed they aren’t a reincarnator, terminate the investigation and return immediately. Do not reveal your identities under any circumstances.”
Theo, pointing at a section of the document, raised a question.
“But isn’t there a mistake here? The mission start date is today?”
“It’s no mistake. You’re to skip training today and pack immediately. If you need supplies, head to the storage and request them—they’ll provide anything you ask for without formalities. If anyone wishes to decline this mission, now’s the time to say so.”
Members of Azure Wings have the right to decline one mission per month, but none of us chose to pass on this one.
We were all eager to build our records. Each of us had our reasons, but we shared the goal of promotion to mid-rank.
We quickly returned to our rooms, packed our belongings, and filed the necessary departure documents. Unlike previous missions, there would be no senior knight accompanying us at the start.
The team consisted solely of myself, Flora, and Theo until we reached the mission site, where we would meet our senior.
With that, the three of us departed Azure Wings Headquarters.
***
It took us nearly three weeks to reach our destination, Silverhill Territory. We met our senior knight in a forest near the territory.
Our senior was Andrew, a mid-ranked member of Azure Wings. He wasn’t wearing the Azure Wings uniform but rather the shabby clothing of an ordinary farmer.
Facing us, Andrew spoke.
“We need to stay undercover, so we won’t wear our uniforms. To avoid drawing attention when entering the territory, we’ll stagger our arrivals. Each of you will enter alone, with some time between each arrival.”
I was to enter first. Andrew handed me a bag containing clothes and explained my cover story.
“Your name is now Serida. You’re a student of herbalism, here on behalf of your master to study the local flora. You can fill in the details as you see fit. If your identity is compromised, leave the territory immediately.”
“What about us?” Theo asked. “How much time should we wait before entering?”
“At least a week. Until then, you two will stay in the forest.”
I reached into the bag to pull out the clothes but hesitated. In the past, I wouldn’t have thought twice about changing here.
But now that I was aware of my sister’s presence in this body, I felt self-conscious. Clearing my throat awkwardly, I took the bag and stepped into the bushes.
The clothes were practical and comfortable: leather shorts, a belt adorned with various brightly colored potions, a high-quality shirt, and a lightweight leather jacket.
The bag also contained dye to change my hair color. After drinking the dye potion, I waited for the transformation.
Before long, my snow-white hair turned golden blonde.
Using the mirror from the bag, I tied my now long, golden hair into a ponytail, leaving my neck exposed, which shimmered faintly in the sunlight.
“Not bad…”
With a face like this, even minimal effort made for a striking appearance. I smiled, satisfied with my reflection. Truly, I was the most beautiful in the world.
