Chapter 17 - Even in This World, Police Are Beings Who Solve Cases(1)
Let’s declare resolutely, even if it doesn’t suit me. It’s time to start investigating the criminal charges against Sai, the worst mastermind in the world setting.
I told Shin Yu-mi, that child, that I would find a way to protect her, but she said she had her own way to stay safe, and after giving me a way to contact her in case of emergencies, we’re not contacting each other for each other’s safety.
This investigation is a fight that I, as a police officer, absolutely cannot back down from for the fate of this world, my life, and the countless victims created by the superpower awakening incidents.
The first thing I did in the face of this investigation that absolutely must not be lost is-
“Oh, fuck.”
Directly transferring evidence extracted from something like vomit at the crime scene to the National Forensic Service.
Honestly, even if I decided to uncover Sai’s crimes and arrest her, would a miraculous incident that would solve the situation suddenly happen before my eyes?
The daily repetition of strange people coming to ask me for help instead of the police, and incidents happening. That’s why I’m running around as usual to solve cases.
This time, the suspect is a guy who sprayed a foul-smelling green liquid on people in an indiscriminate biochemical terror attack and then fled,
and the evidence I’m transferring now, this wallet that doesn’t look particularly special, is evidence that was in the residue left behind.
I can’t touch it or check the inside because of the unidentified liquid with strong viscosity, but won’t the National Forensic Service people or the forensic team find a way to handle it? Thinking this as I transfer it-
The smell is terrible, it’s green, sticky, and has strong viscosity. This unidentified liquid that gives off a stench more terrible than the smell from an outhouse toilet when I went to the countryside in summer is so terrible it’s hard to describe in words.
Even after wrapping it in several layers of plastic and putting it in an icebox, then wrapping that in plastic again, the smell is still leaking out. Thanks to that, my car has become a weapon on the road, spreading the stench of hell.
But why am I transferring the crime scene evidence instead of the National Forensic Service? In my mind dulled by the stench, I briefly recalled the conversation I had when I discovered this evidence.
“- Hey, here! A wallet! There’s evidence- ugh, the smell! Fuck! Didn’t those forensic team guys see what’s right in front of them?! Where are they?!”
“They just left saying they collected all the evidence.”
“…? They left this quickly? Why?”
“They said they collected all the evidence from the scene.”
“Shit… Tell them to come quickly and take this. Those fucking bastards who don’t do their job…”
“… Uh- Sir? I contacted the forensic team, but they said to bring that evidence to the lab yourself. They say they’re busy.”
“……”
“Sir, put down the gun. If you’re going to take it, take the equipment here so you can torture them more painfully.”
Okay, that’s a memory I don’t want to recall. I glared at the cursed stink bomb placed on the passenger seat, but unable to bear the terrible stench that wouldn’t subside, I opened the window.
Since the forensic science research institute is near the city center, of course there were people around the car, and as soon as I opened the window, I saw people recoiling in horror at the stench escaping from the car as if it had been waiting.
Damn, I made a mistake. I quickly closed the window. While inwardly strengthening my resolve to definitely arrest the criminal bastard who gave me such humiliation, I checked the date.
Time has continued to flow and it’s become November, it’s the season when you’ll catch a cold if you don’t wear a thicker coat, and quite some time has passed since I last contacted Shin Yu-mi.
Sai, Sai. I thought while rolling Sai’s name on the tip of my tongue.
She, no, he was the model of a passionate and good police officer even to me who has observed so far.
Friendly not only to citizens but also to colleagues, but no compromise with crime, kind even to bald people like the captain, and capable enough to easily solve cases that even I think how to solve,
Even I, for a moment, thought Sai might not be the mastermind I know, but just a police officer who’s good at everything except fighting.
But when she does obviously suspicious things like in the Ha Tae-sik case and her eyes turn blue every time, those thoughts fly away instantly.
For now, my action plan based on the reasons above is this. Not getting caught about the USB at all,
watching Sai’s suspicious actions when the original work’s major events that will happen in the future occur, and gathering evidence.
Afterwards, somehow help Mina become stronger.
Because she’s the only hope who can bring down Sai. This is all an ordinary police officer like me can actually do.
What a shitty situation. It seems like nothing ever goes well for me.
Ah, no. There is one thing that’s going well for me.
That is, unlike the original work, the relationship between Sai and Mina is quite cold?
They meet often at crime scenes, and Sai tries to take care of her kindly, but Mina rejects Sai for some reason.
Thanks to that, I judged that Mina would believe my words a bit more easily when I try to prove that Sai is a villain, but. Still, questions remain.
In the original work, it’s said that Mina had feelings beyond friendship for Sai, who was cross-dressing as a man, until Sai’s identity was revealed, so why are they cold now?
Did something go wrong because of me again? Still, is it because Mina thinks she doesn’t need Sai since I’m a person favorable to New Hope? No, but she doesn’t have that kind of personality-
“- This is none of my business.”
What’s good is good.
If things don’t go well and Mina can’t believe my words, I’ve also thought of a way to make her listen to me by pretending to have discovered her identity, since Mina is desperate not to reveal her identity.
So if I’m just careful, there shouldn’t be too big of a problem-
… Oh, I’m saying things that a police officer who just helps the protagonist and dies in the middle would say.
Realizing that, the image of me heroically dying while handing over crucial evidence to the protagonist at the last moment flashed through my mind.
Even though it’s just an imagination, I feel a shock to the back of my head from the immense fear. I stopped the car near the road’s variable lane and thought.
Come to think of it, it seems my choice was a bit hasty because I got scared after finding out what Sai’s purpose was. Should I say my thinking was paralyzed by fear?
I calmly regulated my breath and wrote “Survive first” at the top of the action plan I had decided on, moving everything else I had written at the top down.
… But even so, how can I only think of this after several months have passed? Even I think I’m a guy with a bad head to the point where it’s questionable how I even graduated from the police academy, but this seems a bit too much.
“… I really need a drink.”
I should tell the captain to buy me a drink today. If he refuses, I’ll throw away his hair growth product.
As I clicked my tongue and put my hand on the steering wheel to drive to the forensic science research institute again, I saw something strange outside the window.
On the street where people were passing by, two men in white clothes were each running with a child who seemed unconscious on their backs.
I thought maybe they were people living nearby taking children to the large hospital in the area, but in less than a second, I changed my mind and was certain it was an incident as I jumped out of the car.
That’s because one of the men was wearing a strange object that looked like something American KKK members would wear- oh, that bastard just dropped a syringe, damn.
“You crazy- Hey, white clothes! KKK person! Stop! Police!”
“Po-police?!”
“Run!”
The two bastards run away even more frightened at the word police. But how easy would it be to run while carrying a child that looks to be at least 30, 40 kilograms?
I immediately ran to pick up the dropped syringe, then chased after the duo.
As I ran like that, the distance with the strange guys kept getting closer, and they seemed to realize this too as they gave up running on the sidewalk and ran into an alley.
No, this feeling is strange. This doesn’t seem like running away, but like they’re trying to lure me somewhere?
“Ju-just get there! Just that place!”
“Right, we prepared for times like this, didn’t we!”
Even while running breathlessly, sweating profusely, and looking back desperately, it’s audible all the way here that they’re somehow saying ‘Just get there and it’ll be fine!’
… Should I keep chasing them? They obviously look like they’re part of some gang, but I can’t run away because I don’t know what will happen to the kids hanging on their shoulders if I give up the pursuit here.
Sigh, fuck this shitty police life.
“You crazy bastards, stop right there!”
I increased my speed a bit more. I thought if I could just catch them before they reach their destination, and as I ran at full power beyond even when taking the physical fitness test, the suspects soon seemed to run out of stamina and fell face down on the ground.
“Ha, shit. Put the kids down and put your hands up. Ha, it’s so damn cold, what are you doing with kids? You bastards.”
As I glared at the guys while wiping my sweat, the two started crawling on the ground and spouting strange nonsense.
“Fu-fuck…! We did nothing wrong, th-these bastards are devils! We’re going to pass divine judgment in place of you incompetent pig bastards! What’s wrong with that! We brought these monsters to kill them, so even their parents would be grateful!”
I looked at the children. Sky blue and red hair. A boy and a girl. The girl has wings sprouting from her back. Good heavens, are even such little ones getting caught up in superpower awakenings these days?
I was a bit surprised, but what was more surprising was the idiotic sight of them confessing to committing a crime, and child abduction at that.
They say even idiocy becomes a disease if it’s severe enough. I approached to arrest the two, taking out handcuffs. But the moment I approached, the bastard wearing the KKK hood took out a fish knife from his back pocket and swung it.
But I had already seen that something was in his back pocket while running. So I easily avoided the knife, and when I avoided the knife, the hooded bastard this time pointed the knife at the abducted child.
“Get lost! If you don’t, I’ll slit this bastard’s throat!!”
This crazy bastard? Well, if you pulled out a knife, you should be prepared to get shot.
I took out my gun from the holster and pointed it at the KKK hood. At that, the guy stiffened as if surprised, but why? The skinny guy next to him [he looked even thinner because the guy next to him was muscular] grinned and said.
“What are you going to do with that gun out! You guys can’t use them properly anyway! Don’t you know?! They say pig bastards’ police careers end if they use guns! What are you going to do with it out?! If you want to ruin your life, try shooting once!”
… What’s with this idiot?
An idiot ranting to shoot him while thrusting out his chest. I heard there are a lot of stupid dramas these days, is he ranting after watching those?
Well, that statement is not entirely baseless. In this country, a police officer firing a gun isn’t much different from taking off their uniform. But that’s the story from before supervillains appeared.
With the appearance of supervillains, even neighborhood gangsters are increasingly getting crazy, obtaining not only homemade guns but even real guns from somewhere,
and as the danger level rose vertically, the law was also revised, so these days police officers often carry guns not only for supervillain cases but also for general criminal cases.
The Special Investigation Team deals with supervillains so we carry guns every day, and I do too, but – that’s not important here.
I alternately looked at the skinny guy who was laughing shamelessly as if he wasn’t scared, and the KKK hooded pig who was shouting along, having gained courage from the skinny guy’s words.
Wouldn’t it be resolved if I just warn them according to the manual and then shoot the skinny guy’s leg? No, it’s dangerous to shoot now since the kids are being held hostage. Then-
I put away the gun. At that, the faces of the two guys brightened even more, but soon they looked puzzled seeing my actions.
I’m just taking the bullets out of the gun, what’s strange about that? I carefully put the blank and the bullets together in my pocket, and approached the two guys.
The KKK hood flinched and went “uh uh uh” before swinging the knife at me as if to stab. You’re helping me out when the grabbing posture was important anyway. I smiled and instead of avoiding that knife, I grabbed it with my hand.
My eyes narrowed at the pain that was more than just a stinging sensation, and flowing blood wet the ground.
Both the KKK hood and the skinny guy looked at me as if surprised, and I showed them the knife wound on my palm and said.
“Hey, what are you going to do if you stab a detective? It’s fortunate I blocked it.”
“Huh?”
I swung the gun upside down, aiming for the head of the KKK hooded guy making a strange sound. Thanks to controlling my strength relatively well, instead of the sound of meat bursting, a clear ‘thunk’ sound was heard. The big guy fell without even screaming.
The mask falling with a thud. I carefully supported the child that the mask had been holding hostage, and the remaining one guy. The skinny guy screamed looking at the fallen mask and shouted.
“You-you can’t shoot! You’re not supposed to do that! What are you doing!!”
“I didn’t shoot like you wanted. I just swung it.”
“What?!”
“I didn’t ‘shoot’ the gun.”
That’s right. A gun is certainly a weapon with high lethality. But if there’s a problem, it’s that without bullets, it’s just a lump of metal-
But come to think of it, isn’t even just a lump of metal dangerous enough if you swing it?
The gun I use is an S&W M10. It’s a bit hard to use, but if you hold it upside down and hit someone’s head with the handle, it’s certainly something that will hurt seriously. If you misjudge the force, you could really kill someone.
But I, an expert in the blunt weaponization of firearms, can perfectly knock someone out at a level of pain that won’t kill them. As if to prove my thoughts, the mask doesn’t wake up.
With this level of perfect knockout, the skinny guy should be satisfied and go to jail, right? Thinking this, I looked at the skinny guy, but he turned his face blue and crawled backwards.
Then, as if suddenly realizing the existence of the child on his back, the skinny guy smiled an unpleasant smile.
“Do-don’t come! If you come, I’ll kill this bastard! I’ll really kill him!!”
The skinny guy strangling the child he had been carrying on his back with his bare hands. Seeing that sight, I kicked the guy’s leg without hesitation. The skinny guy rolled on the ground making an ugly crying sound.
“I thought crazy bastards would stay holed up at home because it’s winter, but they come out and make trouble again, fuck.”
Really fucking bastards. I took the child from the bastard’s arms and put him down, then looked down at the still whimpering bastard with contempt and said.
“You are under arrest for child abduction charges as of the current time. You can appoint a lawyer who will suffer headaches dealing with your bullshit, you’ll have a chance to make excuses though I wish you didn’t, you have the right to remain silent, and you can request a review of the arrest’s legitimacy to the court. Fuck, get up you bastard.”
What the hell am I doing now when I was trying to deliver evidence.
Every day is so fantastically painful I feel like I’m going to die. I sighed while putting handcuffs on the skinny guy’s wrists, but.
Suddenly, the pattern written on these two guys’ clothes caught my eye. A strange picture of something like a noose standing like a cross inside a circular ring.
Wait a moment, this is something I wrote down in my notebook. This symbol is definitely the symbol of the pseudo-religious cult ‘Human Center’, the main group that causes the ‘Superpower User Suppression Incident’, one of the big events in the novel’s story.
Could it be that it’s already time for the Superpower User Suppression Incident to occur? But if my memory is correct, this pseudo-religious cult Human Center isn’t just brainwashed guys with no brakes, but
they gather dangerous or strongly believing people from among ordinary believers and strengthen their bonds by killing people together.
These guys’ characteristics are that they’re full of hatred and use not only their numbers but also drugs and other human wave tactics to hunt superpower users.
In the novel, they were described as dangerous lunatics who shout that they’re justice and don’t care about police or anything, but why are there only two of them?
The moment I wondered this, I suddenly recalled that these guys had tried to lead me somewhere, and then I heard the sound of people rushing from beyond the alley.
Has there ever been a time when the words ‘lunatics who don’t care about police or anything’ felt this ominous?
Anxiously, I looked towards where the sound was coming from and saw about 20 big guys in white clothes like these two bastards running with tools, no fuck why are they all wearing KKK masks?
As I lost my words at the bizarre sight of a group in white T-shirts and KKK masks, the skinny guy in handcuffs glared and shouted.
“Fu-fuck, you’re late! Hey! This bastard is trying to stop our judgment! Catch this bastard too! He has no bullets in his gun! Kill him!”
“How dare you interfere with the judgment…!”
“Kill that bastard!”
Seeing the KKK masked group holding various weapons from steel pipes to axes, saying they’ll kill me right now. I spat out curses.
Let’s see, if I dawdle trying to put the bullets back in, I’ll probably get beaten to death by those bastards. Solemnly putting the gun back in the holster as a detective and raising my fists-
Instead, I ran away carrying the kids in my arms.
I can’t keep the kids who are unconscious and can’t even support their bodies in a fight, and how can I beat 20 people alone.
This time, the picture becomes me running away carrying children and the white-clothed perverts chasing me. A sudden chase scene in downtown Seoul. One man running for his life carrying two children in his arms, with a group of 20 KKK masked men.
Of course, people went into an uproar reporting this bizarre sight to the police, and although a few escaped, the scene was wrapped up by catching most of the crazy guys.
The fact that one of the escapees is that skinny guy is especially frustrating, but. What can I do? I’ll have to catch him later. More importantly.
“Good heavens… To end with just one wound on your hand against 20 people, are you perhaps a superpower user?”
“So the rumors that Detective Lee Mun-su was a superpower user were true…!”
“Perhaps, huff, the contents of your head, huff, are in mourning?”
Shouldn’t you be thinking about catching the bastards who ran away first, what are you doing? No, I didn’t even fight in the first place, fuck.
Let’s pretend I didn’t hear the local police officers who came to the scene saying words that make me wonder if the contents of their heads have passed away.
Is it because the sweat has cooled? Feeling a chill that makes my body tremble tickling my skin, I looked at the local police officers as if looking at trash.
