Chapter 624
Often, there would be a thunderous boom, and either from the heavens or underground or somewhere else, a massive rift would suddenly tear open. A black river filled with countless shattered nightmares would gush forth. Anyone caught in it would instantly be forcibly transformed into a nightmare.
Immediately after, an insanely powerful madman would burst out of the river, indiscriminately devouring everything in sight. If they happened upon someone who hadn’t yet become a nightmare, they’d grab them, dunk them in the river, and only eat them once fully transformed.
Soon after, another figure identical to the first but more sinister and bloodied would show up, joining the first madman in their frenzied feeding frenzy.
And most infuriatingly, this newcomer would claim while eating that they were “saving” everyone, even thanking those they dragged down to eat. It was utterly infuriating! Unfortunately, those who acted so arrogantly usually had the power to back it up. Faced with two ravenous Leon’s unreasonable hunting spree, the creatures of the twenty layers of the dream realm—excluding the Soulfall Black Abyss—had considered resistance. But one was nearly a True God at 7/8 readiness, and the other had soul strength almost equal to a True God. Just a glance from them could make anyone tremble. Without a True God present, any ordinary dream realm being would just be fodder.
However, within the twenty-one layers of the dream realm, each layer only had one Sovereign. Facing these near-equal insane opponents, no one had the confidence for victory. Most dream realm True Gods merely observed, too afraid to act rashly.
Plus, these two madmen wouldn’t stay long in any single layer of the dream realm. After eating their fill, they’d leave, causing damage that was tolerable. It wasn’t worth risking lives to fight them. Thus, the dream realm True Gods endured, until…
“Stop! Stop right now!”
Upon seeing the black and red versions of Leon feasting wildly and the surrounding dream realm turned barren, the Archer Director, having rushed over upon receiving news, couldn’t help but explode with rage. Her thick eyebrows shot up, and her square face flushed crimson with anger.
“Scoundrels! What exactly are you doing?”
Archer Director?! Not good!!! The Archer Director from the Clearing Bureau?! Not good!!!
Realizing reinforcements from the Clearing Bureau had arrived, both Leons’ expressions changed drastically.
The Nightmare Leon, lacking full Power, shrank back to normal size and tore open the dream realm to escape. However, the enraged Archer Director quickly assessed the situation and teleported behind Nightmare Leon, piercing his heart with her bare hands.
But just then, Armin, who should’ve been flung to some unknown layer of the dream realm, appeared behind the Archer Director. Like when he ambushed the Twin Fish Director earlier, he stabbed her in the heart.
Yet, simultaneously, another figure followed suit, stabbing Armin in the heart as well. All three, having been betrayed from behind, stood in a bizarre line.
Person… Person… Person… Person…
“Pfft…”
Nightmare Leon spat out a mouthful of blood, trembling as he struggled to turn around, cursing furiously:
“You… bastards… I refuse to accept this!”
“Pfft…”
Similarly spitting out blood, the Archer Director ignored his curses and turned back in shock, staring at the revealed “Senior Armin” behind her, incredulously saying, “Aquarius?! How… how is it you?!”
“Pfft…”
After also spitting out blood, the Water Bottle Director, who successfully backstabbed the Archer Director, tightly gripped the Silver Knife piercing her heart and turned back in surprise.
“…”
Your flaws are more numerous than a mosquito net! And I’m not stupid; I noticed them all! If I weren’t so weak compared to you, fearing exposure leading to my immediate demise, I would’ve killed you long ago!
“Director Archer!”
Ignoring the Water Bottle Director’s questions, Leon gritted his teeth, vigorously activating the Silver Knife inside her heart while shouting to the Archer Director, “He must divert his power to suppress my knife, otherwise he’ll be completely ‘cut out’ of existence. Hurry, contact the General Bureau!”
“Cough… He can’t.”
Before the Archer Director could respond, the Water Bottle Director interjected,
“He may be stronger than Pisces, but he’s far easier to deal with. As long as we target his commonly used items… cough… cough cough!”
After several violent coughs, the Water Bottle Director slightly adjusted the blade tip away from her lung, spat out the blood rising in her throat, and continued,
“In short, don’t count on him. I helped craft all his main Anomalous Items; no one understands him better than me. Even though I can’t defeat him head-on, since I’ve caught him off guard, I’m confident he won’t be able to resist.”
Under the Archer Director’s furious glare, the Water Bottle Director’s voice became smoother as she curiously asked, “As for you… you probably haven’t met Senior Armin many times and shouldn’t know much about her style or character. So how did you realize I wasn’t her?”
“One does not know much about Senior Armin, but one knows their badge!”
Despite remaining silent to the Water Bottle Director’s question, Leon involuntarily “responded” in his mind.
Even using the [Trustworthy Older Brother] didn’t gain complete trust from the Twin Fish Director, yet Senior Armin, who never met the Twin Fish Director, could hold her hand and keep her obediently by your side. That doesn’t make sense! The only explanation is the decades of “friendship” between you and the Twin Fish Director, which made her subconsciously trust you and follow your words despite her childlike intelligence.
If these were just guesses, then consider this: when the Twin Fish Director was attacked by the Water Bottle, Senior Armin outside remained unharmed, neither helping nor being harmed. That’s a bigger red flag.
Also, during the reagent distribution, your familiarity with the [Silver Knife] and overly extensive knowledge were glaring issues. Let’s not forget, during the first test, I saw Senior Armin’s “exam paper.” She could recite various emetic agents endlessly without repeating herself.
But details about the dream realm’s ecology and characteristics, things unrelated to medicine or scatological humor, how could she possibly know them so thoroughly? With so many inconsistencies piled up, even a fool would realize she’s been replaced!
“Unwilling to speak?”
Looking at the silent Leon behind her, the curious Water Bottle Director sighed softly, shaking her head helplessly. “You’ve certainly given me quite a surprise, but it doesn’t matter… Lady Goddess of Illusion, could you kindly assist me with a small favor?”
