Chapter 88: Homecoming
Summary:
It's been ten years since Hiccup and Kala's wedding. Things on New Berk are as good as can be, the tribe thriving on their new home. As the year draws to an end, the Berkians prepare for Snoggletog once again and Hiccup has something very special in mind for his mate and their mother.
This is New Berk. At Snoggletog, the greatest time of the year. The lights, the hunting songs, the holiday shopping.
The island was covered in a thick blanket of snow as the Berkians went about their day in preparation for their annual holiday. Dragons and Vikings alike were putting up decorations or doing personal preparations for the holiday.
Fishlegs and Ruffnut were walking through the marketplace to get some last minute gifts for their friends and families.
Ruffnut then halted to a stop as something caught her eye and she went over to a stall as she looked at an axe with interest. "Ah hurr. This would be a cool present for Tuff or Snotlout."
The holiday Dragon Racing.
Snotlout and Hookfang sped through the island in search of one of their flags, five of them already in their basket attached to Hookfang's side as they flew about. Tuffnut then appeared out of nowhere on Barf and Belch as he side checked the Jorgenson and Monstrous Nightmare.
"Hey!" Snotlout exclaimed as he and Hookfang recovered from the hit.
Tuffnut laughed as he looked back at his friend. "Oh, I'm sorry! Did I get in your way?"
"Why you little…get back here!" Snotlout shouted as he urged Hookfang to speed up.
The only thing missing was…our own hatchlings to celebrate it with.
As preparations were under way, the Haddocks were working on their own decorations inside their hut. Kala and Revan were sitting on one of the couches as they worked away on the crystal arrangement that was made out of the crystals from Night Fury Isles. It had become their own little tradition as a family to make a new arrangement of crystals to go atop the fireplace out of the one from the year before. Revna started the tradition her first year on the island as her own little touch to the holidays.
As the two women were finishing up the arrangement, Hiccup was nailing some garlands to the fireplace with one of the hammers from their personal forge, being careful to not cover up any of the Night Fury carvings going across the top of the framework.
"There." Kala said as she lifted the crystal arrangement with a smile. It was a small model of a tree that once resided on Night Fury Isles, as compared to the set of small Night Furies they had the year before.
Hiccup looked over and smiled as he looked at the crystal tree. "It looks beautiful, milady."
"I am surprised that you wanted to have it be a tree from the Isles this year, my little starlight. I did not know you still had such vivid memories of it." Revna said with a slight look of shock, but also joy.
Kala smiled as she looked at her mother. "Well of course I do, Mom. That was our home away from home. Plus, how could I ever forget the beauty of that place?"
Revna laughed and nodded with a smile. "You make a fair point my dear."
Hiccup smiled as he set the hammer down on top of the mantel, then he made his way over to the couch and offered his hands to Kala. Kala smiled gratefully as she set the crystal arrangement on the couch and took his hands, allowing him to hoist her up from her spot. She then smoothed out her dress before she took the small tree when her mother handed it to her.
One major thing that was different this Snoggletog was that Kala was six months pregnant with hatchlings, but the amount of hatchlings would stay a mystery until they were born. She wore a simple red cotton dress that was floor length and had a low-cut collar. She also had on a simple black belt that had silver embroidery that was fastened between her chest and baby bump with a plain clip made of Gronckle iron, as well as her signature black wolf fur cloak that Hiccup made for her almost two decades ago. And even though they could not be seen unless she was walking, she had on comfortable fur shoes.
Her attire had been different a few months back, where she had worn a red tunic, gray pants, a black wolf fur vest, her cloak, and a set of black wolf fur boots. Hiccup's clothes were similar to that outfit now. He wore a deep brown tunic, gray pants, a black bear fur vest, and black bear fur boots.
Kala made her way over to the fireplace and set the crystal tree in the center of the mantel, situating it how she wanted it and making sure it didn't cover up any of the tapestry that hung over the fireplace. The tapestry itself was of her and Hiccup in their dragon forms. They were depicted flying with their foreheads resting against one another's as their tails intertwined, their bodies forming the shape of a heart.
Kala then backed away with a smile once she was satisfied. "Perfect."

Later that same day, Hiccup was going about the village in search of Chieftess Valka with Sharpshot flying beside him. The little Terror had wanted to stretch his wings and chose to accompany his friend through the village, not wanting to be left to his own devices in the hut much longer.
" Where exactly are we going, Hiccup? I thought you guys were all done with shopping and decorations. " Sharpshot said as he tilted his head in curiosity and confusion.
Hiccup smiled. "I wanna talk with Valka about bringing an old tradition back as a surprise for Kala and Mom."
" Oh, okay. What's the tradition? "
"It's a pageant. It was this type of play that the adults would put on for the kids every Snoggletog, but we stopped doing it when me and the other riders started to reach our teen years." Hiccup explained, shuddering slightly at the memory of one of the plays he watched when he was a child. "They were pretty terrifying, if I'm being honest."
" Then why would you want to bring them back? " Sharpshot asked, even more confused now.
"Because we could have it be different this time. It could be about how we made peace between our species instead of it being about Vikings and dragons fighting each other." Hiccup said excitedly.
Sharpshot grew excited and nodded in agreement as he landed on Hiccup's shoulder. " That sounds like an awesome idea! Kala and Revna would love it! "
"I think so, too. But first, we need Valka's okay before we can even start the preparations for it." Hiccup said as he looked around for the chieftess.
To his luck, he spotted Valka not even a yard from where the two dragons were. She was talking with Spitelout about something, the Jorgenson looking rather upset, but that was to be expected with that man. Hiccup made his way over as Spitelout stormed off and cleared his throat.
Valka turned and smiled when she noticed who it was. "Hiccup! What can I do for you dear?"
"I was wondering if I could talk to you about bringing an old Snoggletog tradition back? I wanna surprise Kala and Mom with it this year." Hiccup said, silently glad that Valka wasn't hurt anymore by the fact that he doesn't call her Mom.
"What tradition were you thinking of?" Valka asked with a brow raised in curiosity and intrigue.
"Do you remember those pageants that we used to do every year?" Hiccup asked.
Valka crossed her arms as she looked at the sky in thought, then her eyes widened as she looked back at the Night Fury. "Oh, Hiccup are you sure? Those were violent as could be. Do you really want to surprise your wife and mother like that?"
"I was thinking more along the lines of changing the pageant completely. Have it be about how we made peace instead. I mean, we're a tribe of dragon riders and dragons. Changing it would make sense with how far we've come in eighteen years, don't you think?" Hiccup explained with a smile as he crossed his arms.
Valka thought over his idea then smiled and nodded. "Alright, we can do it."
Hiccup smiled and hugged her. "Thank you!"
Valka smiled and hugged him back, closing her eyes and enjoying the embrace. She tried to hold onto these special moments with him as long as she could, for fear of them never happening again. Their relationship had been rocky for years and is now just barely getting to a good standing point. Valka didn't want to make a wrong move and mess that up.
When they separated, Hiccup began to leave to start setting up the pageant, a joyous bounce in his step. Valka smiled as she watched him and Sharpshot walk off, getting lost in her thoughts.
'His appearance hasn't changed a single bit since I first saw him thirteen years ago..'
Hiccup looked back at her confused at first, but that confusion was replaced with an embarrassed smile as he looked himself over then back at the chieftess.
"I think it's because dragons live a long time." He said, which made Valka jump in surprise.
"D-did I say that out loud?" She asked.
Hiccup nodded with a small laugh. "Yeah. Yeah you did. I'll see you later Valka."
And with that, the two dragons were gone.

On the other side of the village, a group of kids were playing by one of the statues of Stoick the Vast with hard leather balls.
"Hit his nose!" One exclaimed.
They all laughed as they threw the balls about, hitting the statue every now and then. Gobber noticed and hobbled over rather upset. He caught one of the balls with his prosthetic, bursting it and throwing it to the side.
"Yeah, two for me!" Another one of the kids shouted as he lifted his arms in victory.
"Filthy Hellions. How dare ye desecrate the statue of Stoick the Vast." Gobber scolded.
The children looked at one another and laughed.
"Who?"
"Stoick, the bravest Viking in the history of Berk. He put the king in Viking." Gobber explained, then he turned and looked up at the statue of his late friend. "Oh, my dear friend. I miss you so. Remember the time we were at that meat house and those two Visigoths wagered I couldn't hold my left elbow in a boiling pot of gruel for five minutes?"
The kids become bored and rush off to find somewhere else to play, dodging Hiccup and Sharpshot as they did. Hiccup smiled and maneuvered around them as they passed, then he looked at Gobber, who was still talking to the statue.
"...Haha. Good times."
Hiccup cleared his throat. "Uh..Gobber?"
Gobber looked over at him and smiled. "Hey little flame. I was just talking to a statue of your father as if he was really here."
Hiccup pursed his lips as he glanced at the statue of his dad, then back at his mentor.
"It pains me how the wee ones of this town have forgotten Stoick." The blacksmith sighed.
"Yeah, but can you blame them? They never met him. They've only ever heard stories or seen the statues throughout the village Gobber." Hiccup said a bit down as he looked at the statue with a tiny smile.
"Aye, you have a point lad. Anyways, what can I do for ye?" Gobber asked with a smile.
"I'm bringing back the Snoggletog Pageant to surprise Kala and Mom. Could you help me out?" Hiccup asked.
If anyone could help him get the ball rolling on this pageant it would be Gobber. He put a lot of time and effort into them all those years ago.
Gobber's eyes widened and he smiled brightly. "I'd be more than happy ta, Hiccup."

Once they got to Gobber's hut, the blacksmith dug out an old book from his storage. He then blew off a thick cloud of dust, wiping away whatever remained before he handed the book to Hiccup.
"Here ya are, little flame. The script I wrote for the last pageant." Gobber said with a smile.
Hiccup took the book and began to flip through it, grimacing as he read snit bits of the script as he went. He thought back to this specific pageant and shuddered as he remembered his father on the stage, 'killing' models of dragons and not holding back the aggression.
"Die, you evil beasts with twisted souls!" Stoick shouted as he chopped the head of a model dragon. "Vikings will forever swim in rivers of your blood!"
All the children that sat around a nine-year-old Hiccup were clapping and enjoying the performance, but Hiccup looked absolutely horrified.
"Oo, that's nasty." Gobber said as he read the script over Hiccup's shoulder.
"This…this has not aged well." Hiccup said, still very taken aback. "Do you think we could just start from scratch? I was thinking of having this one be about how we were able to make peace between our species. Show the kids and my mom how everything changed for the better, ya know?"
"Oh, Hiccup I love that, I'll start writing immediately. This is going to be just what we need. To honor our friendship with dragons and of course…" Gobber said, trailing off slightly as he let a large tapestry of Stoick looking rather angry unroll and hang for the Night Fury and Terrible Terror to see. "...my great friend…Stoick."
Sharpshot jumped at the sudden appearance of the tapestry, landing back on Hiccup's shoulder rigidly. Hiccup looked at the tapestry a bit shocked, but that shock was replaced with a sad look as he looked at Gobber. He never expected Gobber to get this bad. This was on the brink of full on obsession of the man.
~~~HTLANF~~~
The next day, Hiccup was working in his and Kala's personal forge on things for the stage. At the moment he was testing out the script reader, making sure it spun the parchment without any complications.
The Night Fury jumped in surprise as Gobber slammed open the gate that led to the porch and he looked over at the man as he tried to calm down from the startle.
Gobber was puffing as he walked over to him with a stack of parchment in hand. "Hiccup. I've been up all night…just the first draft…but I've got to be honest…it's brilliant!!!"
Hiccup looked at him shocked. "It hasn't even been a day, Gobber. How in Thor's name did you already finish it?" He asked as he took the offered stack of parchment and began reading through it.
"What can I say, little flame? I'm ecstatic for the pageant. Couldn't sleep a wink!" Gobber chuckled. "What do ya think?"
"It's…good. There's just one thing I don't quite get though. How come Dad is the main focus in this?" Hiccup asked as he looked up from the script in confusion.
"Isn't it obvious lad? To show the children who he was!" Gobber said as though it was plain as day.
"Okayyy. But this isn't how any of it happened." Hiccup said, a downcast expression as he flipped through the script.
"Ah, it's just a pageant. Not like it's a history book, Hiccup. We all know you and Kala were the peacemakers. This is just for a fun time." Gobber explained with a smile.
Hiccup sighed and nodded. "I suppose you're right."
~~~HTLANF~~~
The following day came with busy preparation for the pageant, which would take place that night. Hiccup was looking through the script again, rather displeased with how he was portrayed in it.
Fishlegs walked passed with some scenery in hand. "Coming through."
Hiccup backed up without looking up to keep from getting hit by the scenery as his friend passed, then Gobber came up to him with a smile.
"Great news, Hiccup. After exhausting casting, we've found our Hiccup for the pageant." He said happily.
Hiccup looked up. "Yeah, Gobber…actually I want to ask you about the whole Hiccup character in the story…" He said as he lifted the script with a concerned look.
Gobber ignored him as he turned towards the stage. "Hiccup, present yourself."
Tuffnut then walked towards the edge of the stage in a costume that represented the attire Hiccup wore when he was fifteen. There was even a mop of brown wool on top of his head, not even hiding his dreadlocks that were still very visible underneath.
"Tuffnut?!" Hiccup asked, pure shock clear in his voice and on his face.
"Tuffnut, give us a taste." Gobber said with crossed arms as he gestured for the Thorston to recite a line from the script.
Tuffnut nodded looking bored, then began to say one of the lines, not even bothering to change his voice. "Er, a dragon is coming. Aghhh, help me, help…er, er…line?"
Gobber held up a clipboard with a page of a script attached to it. "Me."
"Right. Meeeee." Tuffnut finished.
"Are you…" Hiccup trailed off, his eye twitching slightly in annoyance.
He tried to leave, but Gobber grabbed the Night Fury and pulled him back over.
"Great, now let's see you run away in fear." Gobber said.
Tuffnut then leaped up and down, his legs going everywhere while he grunted.
"Look at those knock-knees! And the splayed gait of a newborn lamb." Gobber chuckled, rather proud of himself for casting Tuffnut.
"I do not run like that. Do I run like that?" Hiccup asked, then shook his head to clear it and he looked at Gobber. "Which brings me to a bigger point. I've read through the script more, Gobber, and I have some notes. I'm not sure that my depiction in this is coming through right. It's not as brave as I was. You've basically dumbed me down to a wimp in this."
Gobber placed his good hand on Hiccup's shoulder. "Oh little flame, I think we've got the gist of it."
Hiccup glares at him slightly. "Gobber, it's not in any way me. This is supposed to be a surprise for Kala and our mom. Not a way for you to glorify my dad like this."
Snotlout smirked as he made his way onto the stage, planning on poking fun at his cousin as he went over to Tuffnut. He then put on a calm face.
"Hey, Hiccup I was…Oh. Wrong one." Snotlout said, trying not to laugh when he saw the exasperated look on his cousin's face.
"Are you serious?" Hiccup asked, a small growl forming in the back of his throat in annoyance.
"Hah hah hah!" Gobber laughed with a shake of the head at Snotlout's antics.
"Coming through." A stagehand said as they passed Hiccup and Gobber with some equipment for the pageant.
~~~HTLANF~~~
As time went on, they went through many people to try and find who would play Stoick. Gobber was making it difficult, too. He kept rejecting whoever auditioned for the late chief's role.
"Better luck next time, Angus." Gobber said, and the Viking in question deflated as he walked off the stage. "Nice effort. Who's next?"
Hiccup was sitting on a bench in front of the stage looking very bored with how Gobber was going about the casting. Fishlegs then walked up on the stage looking a little nervous.
"Fishlegs Ingerman, reading for the role of Stoick the Vast." He said as he wrung his hands nervously.
Upon a high platform, a Viking held a shield that he used to reflect light from the fire pit in front of him, shining down the reflection on Fishlegs.
Fishlegs then sighed as he gathered his courage and began reciting. "If I don't return, er no, no." He coughed and cleared his throat, then stood straighter and began to speak again with a perfect impersonation of Stoick. "If I don't return, know that all I am, all I do, is for you, my precious Hiccup."
Hiccup's eyes widened in awe as he leaned forward in his seat, tears forming in his eyes. It sounded just like his father and it pulled at his heart a bit to hear him again after thirteen years.
"Wow…" Hiccup breathed, then he looked at Gobber excitedly. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
"Yes I am… This isn't working!" Gobber exclaimed.
"What?! Not working?" Hiccup asked, confused.
"You're right. I should do it! No, no don't try and talk me out of it. I knew Stoick best." Gobber said as he went to go up on stage.
Hiccup grew annoyed and growled as scales formed around his eyes. He grabbed Gobber's arm as he stood. "No."
"No?" Gobber asked as he looked at Hiccup confused.
"I'm putting my foot down on this one Gobber. Fishlegs is going to be my dad in this. That's final. Kala deserves to hear Dad's voice again and Fishlegs can provide that. I let you have control of casting this far, but now I'm taking over." Hiccup said with finality.
Gobber sighed and nodded. "No, you're right. I'm sorry Hiccup. I let my feelings get in the way."
"Thank you." Hiccup said as he let go of his mentor, his scales sinking back into his skin as he smiled.
"Ruffnut, where are you taking us?" Kala asked with a slight laugh as her friend led her by the hand.
Revna followed behind the two women with a smile, but she was also rather curious on where the Thorston was leading the two of them. Ruffnut had spent the entire day with them, acting a bit odd when Kala would want to go see what Hiccup was up to and preventing the dragoness from leaving. It got the elder Night Fury curious from the behavior.
"You'll see." Ruffnut said with a smile, not wanting to give anything away to her friend.
Kala rolled her eyes with a smile as she let Ruffnut lead her to wherever they were going. Her eyes widened when a stage and audience seating came into view. There were already people and dragons alike gathering and sitting down.
"What in Akatosh's name..?" Kala asked in confusion, but also awe.
Ruffnut didn't say anything as she led the Haddock to the front and made her sit down on one of the wooden benches. "Stay here. You'll love this, I promise KK."
"Okayyy?" Kala said with a raised brow as her friend rushed away.
Revna sat beside her daughter, stifling a laugh at the confused look upon her face. Kala looked at her with an even more confused look.
"What?"
"Oh, nothing, my little starlight. You seem very confused is all." Revna said with a smile.
"That's because I am. What is going on?" Kala asked as she fixed her sitting position to get more comfortable as one of the hatchlings began to move about.
Revna smiled and fixed her daughter's clothes for her as she got comfortable. "I do not know, dear. But I'm sure we'll see in a moment."
Not even a second after Revna said that, bagpipes began to play and the crowd quieted down and looked at the stage. Some musicians that were gathered around the stage played an introduction piece and Ruffnut and Gobber pulled a rope backstage that pulled a wooden sun up above the stage. Down in the prompts area at the front of the stage, Snotlout gets the script set up to the opening scene. A Viking that was above the stage shone a light down onto the center of the stage.
Once everything was set up, the curtains opened to reveal Fishlegs dressed as Stoick with a straw beard and a gawky looking Tuffnut dressed as Hiccup standing in the center of the stage. The audience clapped and the dragons made excited noises at a low volume as Kala looked at her friends with wide eyes.
'What is going on?' She thought, her confusion only growing.
"Hiccup, today is the day everything changes. I have tamed a dragon." Fishlegs said in his Stoick voice.
Kala covered her mouth as tears formed in her eyes, blinking rapidly to keep her sight from getting blurry. To hear her father's voice again made so many happy memories pop up at the forefront of her mind. It had been so long, she had feared she would have forgotten what he sounded like. But to hear his voice coming from one of her closest friends made her overjoyed.
There was a pause as Tuffnut looked down at the script, Snotlout winding it at a slow pace.
Tuffnut bent down to read the script. "I am so tiny and afraid…"
The crowd stifled laughs and Kala giggled as she thought back to the day she and Hiccup met.
'Not how this went down, but this is cute nonetheless.'
Hiccup peeked from backstage and smiled when he saw how happy his mate was. She was laughing with tears in her eyes, but he wasn't sure if the tears were there before or after she began laughing. He then looked at their mom and saw she was smiling while covering her mouth with a finger as her arms were crossed, her shoulders shaking as she tried to keep from laughing herself.
'Glad to see they're enjoying this.' He thought, then he hid backstage once more to wait for his signal.
"Hiccup, you are weak and fear dragons." Fishlegs said as he rested his hands on Tuffnut's shoulders. "I am strong and understand them…"
Smoke was then released, which was the que Hiccup needed. He transformed into his dragon form and flew above the stage, staying hidden in the smoke, only a shadow to the audience.
"A dragon!" One of the children in the crowd exclaimed as she bounced in her seat.
Kala smiled as she watched her mate fly over the stage.
"There he is. The Night Fury." Fishlegs said as he gestured to Hiccup as he flew above them slowly.
Tuffnut looked down at the script with narrowed eyes as he read off his next line. "Aghhh, a dragon." He then 'hid' behind Fishlegs.
Fishlegs chuckled and made a heroic pose. "Fear not, my son. For I have tamed the Night Fury."
Hiccup then landed and splayed his wings, staying shrouded by the smoke.
"Brave father, I remember your wise words. Hiccup, you can be a giant, but face thine enemies with care and bravery…" Tuffnut read off.
"Aye, that is right." Fishlegs said, then he turned to Tuffnut and rested his hands on his shoulders again. "I must join the fight now, my son. If I do not return, know that all I am, all I do, is for you, my precious Hiccup."
Tuffnut took that as his que to run off stage, which got laughs from the audience and a snort from Kala.
'That's not how Hiccup runs, but gods it's funny.'
Fishlegs then turned to Hiccup and slowly approached him. "Greetings, magnificent creature, will you allow me, Stoick the Vast, to ride with you into battle?"
Fishlegs then lifted his hand and extended his arm out towards Hiccup. He then turned his head away and closed his eyes as he waited. The audience's breath hitched as they watched in anticipation for what would happen next. Hiccup hesitated as he leaned in, then he closed his eyes as he pushed his snout into Fishlegs' outstretched hand, recreating how he and Kala solidified their friendship all those years ago.
The audience cheered, some standing from their seats as they did, the dragons in the crowd roared and chirped excitedly. Kala smiled as tears formed in her eyes again as the memory of that day played through her mind.
Fishlegs then looked up at Hiccup and spoke in a heroic pose. "Let man and dragon be forever bonded in trust and love."
With that, the curtains closed and the crowd erupted in cheers and shouts of joy, claps, whistles, roars and chirps. The curtains then opened again to reveal Hiccup in his human form, Fishlegs, and Tuffnut hand in hand as they bowed. The cheering grew louder as the audience threw flowers onto the stage and dragons sent fire into the sky.
After the pageant was over, Hiccup made his way over to his mate and mother with a smile as the tribe began to clear out and go back to their homes as it grew dark outside.
"So? What did you two think?" He asked as he sat beside Kala and grasped her hand gently.
"I have no words. It was amazing, my love." Kala said with a smile.
"Yes, it was a very good show, Hiccup." Revna said, smiling as well.
"I'm glad you liked it." He said as he intertwined his and Kala's fingers. "I wanted it to be a surprise for the both of you. We used to do pageants like this when I was a kid and I wanted you guys to experience it. Granted, the pageants back then were nothing compared to this." Hiccup explained.
"So that's why Ruffnut was being weird!" Kala realized with wide eyes.
Hiccup laughed and nodded. "Yeah, I had her be on distraction duty while we set up the stage. How about we go home?"
Kala and Revna nodded in agreement and Hiccup smiled as he stood and helped Kala to her feet.
As the three Night Furies were walking home, Gobber joined them with a smile.
"You like the pageant little flame?" He asked as he looked at Kala.
"Yes, Gobber. Very much. Was a wonderful surprise." She said as she smiled at her mate.
Hiccup smiled back and kissed her cheek, which earned a purr from the dragoness.
"Glad ta hear it. Well, I guess I'll be heading home, alone…all the best Snoggletogs I spent in solitary, cavernous, silence." Gobber said sadly as he split from the three dragons to head home.
"Gobber?" Kala asked, which got the man to look back at them with a raised brow.
"If you are free tonight..?" Hiccup offered with a smile.
"I'd love to." Gobber said as he made his way back to the small family and walked with them back to the Haddock household.
Three Months Later
Hiccup paced in the living room nervously while biting his finger slightly as he crossed his arms. Kala had gone into labor earlier that morning and the midwives wouldn't let him anywhere near their bedroom when they got to the hut not even an hour after Revna went to get them. They had ushered him out of the room and forbid him from entering until all the hatchlings were born.
He whined in worry when he heard Kala screech in pain, his pacing getting faster. It had been hours, the sun already beginning its descent as Hiccup paced back and forth, very slowly making a hole in the floor as he did.
Revna smiled sadly and got up from her spot on one of the couches. "She'll be alright Hiccup. She's a strong woman."
"I-I know…I just wish they'd let me be in there with her…" Hiccup whimpered, not stopping in his pacing.
Revna went over to her pacing son and rested her hands on his shoulders to stop him, lifting his head with her finger to make him look at her. "She is going to be perfectly fine, my little ember. As will the hatchlings. You must be patient."
Hiccup whined and nodded in defeat, then he looked upstairs with a whimper. Revna smiled sadly and ruffled his hair.
"Lief was like this when we had our first litter, too. He was just a bundle of nerves. My mother wouldn't let him near me the entire time." Revna said, hoping to distract her son a little while longer.
Hiccup looked at her with wide eyes. "He was?"
Revna laughed slightly and nodded. "Oh, yes. He was scared, not only of the possibility of me not making it, but also scared of the possibility of our children not making it. Just like you are now."
"So…why did your mom keep him away?" Hiccup asked, not quite understanding.
"She was a protective mother, as all mothers are of their children. She did not want him to get in the way of the midwives as they helped me through the birthing process, just like the midwives are doing for Kala now. If he was allowed to be by my side, his instincts would have taken control and he would've kept the midwives from doing their jobs. Which is why you needed to be down here with me." Revna explained calmly.
Hiccup's eyes widened as he looked down. "So that's why they made me leave the room…"
"Yes, that is why." Revna said, but before either of them could say another word, one of the midwives came downstairs.
Hiccup looked at her in worry, but that washed away when she smiled.
"You can go upstairs now, Hiccup." She said.
Hiccup lit up as he rushed upstairs, Revna shaking her head with a smile. Hiccup then opened the door and went over to the bed, taking Kala's hand as he sat on his knees at the edge on the floor.
Kala smiled at him tiredly and rested her sweat-covered forehead against his with her eyes closed. "Hey…"
Hiccup smiled and closed his eyes as he intertwined their fingers and rubbed the back of her hand with his thumb. "Hey, love. How ya feeling?"
"Tired…very tired…and sore…" She said sleepily.
Hiccup smiled a bit wider and kissed her forehead. "Yeah, I can imagine."
Hiccup's attention was then torn away from his mate when he heard crying and he looked over at where it was coming from, only to see three little bundles in a cradle by the bed as he stood. He gained a curious yet wonder-struck look as he slowly walked over to the cradle to look at his hatchings.
The one who was crying was laying on the left side of the cradle. He noticed that they had an auburn tuft of hair on their head, whereas the hatchling in the middle had a tuft of black hair, and the hatchling on the right side had a tuft of auburn hair like their sibling on the left side. Hiccup gently picked the crying hatchling up and held them close as he rocked them back and forth.
Kala smiled as she watched him soothe their child. "That one is a girl…"
Hiccup smiled and let his daughter grasp tightly to one of his fingers. "Hi my little flower.." He then looked at Kala with a smile. "What should we name her?"
"I was thinking of the name Dart for her…" Kala said with a small smile.
Hiccup looked down at his daughter with a fond smile. "Dart…I like it. Dart Aurora Haddock."
"That's perfect my love…" Kala said, nothing but love in her words.
Hiccup nodded then looked in the cradle at the other two hatchlings. The one in the middle was fighting to get out of the furs they were bundled up in, while the one on the right was sound asleep.
"What gender are these two?" Hiccup asked as he looked back at his mate curiously.
"Both boys…Dart was born first…then the boy in the middle…then the boy to the right of his brother…" Kala explained, pushing her bangs out of her face to the best of her ability.
"Two boys and a girl.." Hiccup smiled wide as he gently laid Dart back down into the cradle when he noticed she was sound asleep now, then he picked up the boy that was in the middle. "Hey there, bud. You sure do have a lot of energy, huh?"
The hatchling stopped in his attempts to break free of his confinement as he looked up at his father curiously with forest green eyes. He then reached out to Hiccup cooing curiously and Hiccup let him grab hold of his hand.
"Stoick." Hiccup said and Kala's eyes widened as she teared up.
"Are you sure, Hiccup..?" She asked.
Hiccup nodded and smiled. "Yeah. He's feisty like Dad was. I can tell he's gonna grow up to be a strong warrior."
Kala smiled and wiped away the tears that threatened to fall. "Alright…Stoick it is… Stoick Horrendous Haddock…"
Hiccup chuckled and looked at Kala with a small smirk. "My middle name?"
Kala smirked back. "Why not..? I think it suits him…"
Hiccup smiled as he looked back down at Stoick. "You have a point, milady. Stoick Horrendous Haddock it is."
Hiccup then looked at their youngest son and tilted his head curiously, trying to come up with a name for him. "What should we name our youngest?"
Kala thought for a minute. "Could you pick him up..? I didn't get a good look at him before the midwives took him away to clean him up…"
Hiccup nodded and gently laid Stoick down, the hatchling in question whining as his father let go of him. Hiccup stifled a laugh as he gently kissed Stoick's head, then he picked up the youngest hatchling and held him close as he moved to let Kala see him.
Kala smiled as she took in her youngest's appearance and thought over names for him. After some time, she finally found one that would work, a soft smile forming on her lips. "Lief…"
Hiccup's eyes widened, but they quickly softened as a smile formed on his lips and he looked down at their youngest. "Yeah, Lief works perfectly for him. Lief Odahviing Haddock."
"That's perfect…Dart…Stoick…and Lief…our three little wonders…" Kala said happily.
Five Years Later
Three Night Fury hatchlings race one another ahead of their parents as they make their way to the Hidden World. The parents flew side by side behind them with smiles as they made sure their daughter and sons didn't get out of hand.
The father was rather small compared to the mother in dragon form and had forest green eyes, while the mother had toxic green eyes and a very noticeable red tailfin with a white Night Fury symbol on the fabric.
The eldest of the hatchlings was their daughter, who had both forest green and toxic green eyes. The middle hatchling, the energetic tike that he was, had forest green eyes. And the youngest of them all had toxic green eyes like his mother.
As they were flying, the eldest and middle hatchlings started to fight midair and their mother roared at them, which got the two hatchlings to stop and look at her.
" Hey! What have your father and I said about fighting in midair? " She scolded.
The two hatchlings whimpered in apology with their heads down, earplates flat against their heads.
" Sorry Momma.. " They apologized in unison.
Their mother huffed and nudged the both of them to keep going to catch up with their father and little brother.
" It's alright, just don't do it again. Go on. We're almost there. " She urged.
The two hatchlings lit up and raced after their father and brother to catch up to them and their mother shook her head as she sped up to catch up to her family.
As she had said, they arrived at the entrance of the Hidden World a minute later and landed on a large rock floating at the edge of the waterfall. There were three dragons waiting there for the family, one adult Light Fury, and two Light Fury hatchlings.
The adult smiled and bowed her head in greeting to the two adult Night Furies. " It's good to see the two of you again, Hiccup, Kala. " She greeted happily.
Kala smiled and bowed in greeting as well. " You as well Luna. "
Hiccup did the same and smiled. " Been a while. How are things? "
" They have been well. Lumi and Olen have been learning how to transform this past week. And what of your hatchlings? Have they finally gotten control of their dragon forms? " Luna asked with a tilt of her head.
Both Night Furies plopped onto the ground tiredly and Luna giggled.
" Are they that much more of a handful now? " She asked, knowing full well that the answer was yes.
" You have no idea. Dart and Stoick are constantly fighting each other and destroying anything and everything they can get their hands on. " Kala explained with a tired sigh.
" And what of Lief? " Luna asked as the three adults looked at the five hatchlings as they played, making sure none of them accidentally fell into the entrance or the ocean.
" He's the complete opposite of his siblings. He'd much rather stay with either Kala or I the majority of the time, or is snoozing away in a sun patch or anywhere he finds comfy. " Hiccup said with a shrug.
" We still have no idea where he got it from, but at least that's one less hatchling we have to wrangle each and every second. " Kala added.
Luna nodded with a small laugh. " Yes, I can imagine. "
The three adult Furies jump in surprise when they hear a yelp from the five hatchlings and look in that direction to see Dart, Stoick and Olen fighting one another. The three adults huff in sync and walk over to the hatchlings, pulling the three of them apart.
After the three parents finished scolding the three hatchlings, they decided to go fly about amongst the clouds.
Hiccup and Kala raced each other in hybrid form as Luna let the children rest on her back as she glided calmly on a wind current as she followed the two Night Furies.
Dart and Stoick cheered on their parents in their human forms, Stoick for his father and Dart for her mother respectfully.
Kala smirked at her mate and pulled him into a kiss, making him dazed with a dorky smile as she sped ahead of him, her tail rubbing under his chin as she passed him by.
Hiccup shook his head to break out of his love-struck trance and smirked as he sped up to catch up to her.
