Chapter 42 – The White Mage (11)

—–CROW—–

“Here’s why I think you’ll be fine~.”

Lucy said, holding up a few sheets of paper.  She must have thought I was skeptical because I was speechless from relief.

“Variant magic increases in output as the depth increases. But the mana waveform that causes the mutation is divided into four stages based on depth: initial, intensification, dormant, and final.”

She showed me several sheets of paper. They looked like ultrasound images painted with various colors.  Or maybe some crude modern art.

“But variant magic basically has a… limit.  A maximum point for the physical changes.  Once the body has fully transformed, there’s no need for further changes, right?  It’s similar to that~.”

“Hmm. So that’s what ‘final stage’ meant?”

“Yes. This is the mana waveform of your Beast Regression magic.  The papers Lucy’s holding are waveforms of other variant magics.  Can you guess what they have in common?”

Tirshi said, holding up a still-wet painting. I examined it carefully and said,

“…They both look… calm.”

I wasn’t an expert, so that was the best I could come up with.

The mana pattern of Beast Regression and the other paintings were almost symmetrical, like mirror images, and the paint splatters were subdued. I felt a sense of déjà vu looking at the green paint on the paper.

“If I were to paint the movement of mana when I use Beast Regression, it would look exactly like this.”

“Correct~! This painting is a direct representation of the mana observed by the magical tool, applied to ink!  The common point is that the mana causing the mutation is in its final stage in both cases.”

Lucy held up another painting.  This one was a chaotic mess of colors, as if a tiny fairy had danced across the paper with a paintbrush.

“This is the mana waveform during the intensification stage, when the body is actively undergoing mutation.  See the difference?  Your magic’s mutation-causing mana isn’t moving anymore.”

“Ah, I understand.”

I figured out what they were getting at.

“Variant magic has a ‘maximum’ point for physical changes, which can be determined by this magical tool—”

I tapped the metal cylinder and continued my deduction.

“And since Beast Regression exhibits the same characteristics as other variant magics *after* they’ve stopped mutating, my body won’t undergo any further changes.  Is that about right?”

“Exactly. You understand perfectly.”

Her confirmation calmed me down.

The Beast Regression dick enlargement upgrade patch was 100% complete, and there would be no further changes.

So, variant magic didn’t mean endless transformations; it had a set “goal” and stopped once it was reached.  It must be accurate, considering it was a conclusion drawn by experts based on actual cases.

“The magical tool we have here isn’t top-of-the-line, but it’s accurate, so you can trust it,” Lucy said, organizing the mana waveform images.

“Especially yours.  It’s a very clean and easy-to-read image.”

She picked up a painting, blew on it, and showed it to me. It was a drawing of a penis and balls.  It looked familiar.

“Ta-da~! This is an image of the mana residue on your… thing!  It’s also called AER-Comanie~.”

Holy shit, that was my dick. I was speechless.

“…The residue is that… detailed?”

“It’s a projection of the remaining magic power, so it won’t last long. If you get another checkup in a few days, it won’t show up like this.  So… can I make something based on this shape?”

—*Lick.*

Lucy asked, licking her lips.  A shiver ran down my spine; it felt like a venomous snake had slithered across my back.

“I’d rather you didn’t.  Wouldn’t you be creeped out if someone wanted to make something based on *your* body?”

“Aww, too bad.”

Lucy backed down easily when I refused.  Then she waved the still-wet dick scan in front of me.

“If you don’t want me to, I won’t.  What about this painting?  Do you want to keep it? Or should I dispose of it?”

“I’ll destroy it myself. Give it to me.”

“Fine.”

I took the dick scan and ripped it to shreds. What the hell was I going to do with it?  It would be a waste of good paper, so I might as well turn it into fertilizer.

*Rip—rip—*

I crumpled the torn pieces and stuffed them into my pocket.  I’d burn them later.  I sighed deeply.

“I’m worried about what’s going to happen now,” I said.

“About what?”

“About the Beast Regression magic.  It’ll cause a huge commotion if it becomes public knowledge.”

Beast Regression was basically a dick enlargement spell.

A big dick mutation with no side effects!

What man would pass that up?  As I had suspected, everyone would be clamoring to learn Beast Regression as a passive skill.

For some reason, it only worked on me right now, but with enough research, they could figure out the cause and make it usable by others.

Would the average dick size in this world eventually reach 12 inches?  The thought was terrifying.

“Nah~, that won’t happen.”

Lucy said confidently.  I was puzzled and asked,

“Why not?  It might sound ridiculous coming from me, but I think many people would be interested in Beast Regression, even with the… side effect.”

“Hmm~ explaining that would take a while.”

Lucy tilted her head, stretched, and then said something incredibly irresponsible.

“Okay~!  I don’t like boring stories, so I’ll pass!”

“Excuse me?”

“Hee hee.  Ask Tirshi about the boring stuff~. She knows more than I do.”

Lucy stood up, swaying her hips seductively, and brushed past me.  She stopped, leaving a trail of perfume, and looked at me alluringly.

“Or… do you want to come to my room and talk about something… more fun?”

Lucy’s finger traced my jawline.  I recognized the move and replied without hesitation,

“No, thank you for the offer, but I’ll have to decline.”

Cheat on Francesca?  No way.

Sure, I dreamed of polygamy, but this was different.  Sleeping with another woman behind Francesca’s back and then saying, “This is my second wife! Be nice!” was a recipe for disaster.

‘What if I hurt Francesca’s feelings?’

I would only take another wife after discussing it properly with Francesca. That was the least I could do, considering I had embraced the culture of this world.

Besides, I hadn’t even properly married Francesca yet.  It was too soon to be jumping into another woman’s arms.

“Hahaha! I knew you’d say that.”

Lucy laughed, unfazed by my rejection.

Her resilience to minor setbacks was impressive.  If I got rejected like that, it would haunt me for a week.

“Well, I’ll be going then!  You two have fun~!”

With that, the blonde social butterfly dropped her bomb and left. Tirshi and I were left standing there like scarecrows after a storm, sighing.

It seemed that in every world, introverts struggled to keep up with extroverts.

***

Tirshi and I returned to Usrate’s office.

“I’m relieved that the side effects aren’t a problem,” I said, leaning back on the sofa and exhaling deeply.  Tirshi, sitting across from me, nodded.

“Yes. I’m glad I could give you good news after the examination.”

Her smile was a bit strained.  It was understandable; it was an awkward topic.

—Your dick is healthy!  Congratulations!  *Clap, clap!*

It was a rather embarrassing thing for a young woman to say.  I tried to change the subject, considering Tirshi’s feelings.

“Anyway, I’d like to ask the question I had earlier… why did Lucy say that no one would be interested in Beast Regression?”

It was important, so I sat up straight.

A dick enlargement spell was undeniably appealing.

Most men in this world, wives dissatisfied with their husband’s size, and people looking to profit from it!

I had assumed all sorts of people would be drawn to Beast Regression’s… unique side effect.

I might end up harassed like a lottery winner if I didn’t make the magic public.

So, I planned to donate the Beast Regression spell to the Mage’s Guild before things got out of hand.

A dick upgrade patch was like a lottery ticket anyone could use.  Hoarding it wouldn’t benefit Francesca and me.

It was better to get rid of this trouble magnet and avoid any responsibility or harm. No idiot would come after me for a publicly available spell.

And if they did, they’d be too broke to afford the spellbook anyway.

‘Once my dick issue is resolved, I can just wash my hands of this whole thing.’

That’s why I had been honest about the side effects.

But for some reason, others weren’t interested in the magic. Not even that unscrupulous racist, Usrate.

It was unthinkable that the selfish bastard would kick a golden goose like that. If he had thought Beast Regression was profitable, he would have tried to sweet-talk me into giving him exclusive rights to the magic.

Therefore, this meant that mages weren’t interested in Beast Regression’s side effect—the dick enlargement.

I was dying to know why.

“Well, to put it simply, there’s no guarantee that others will experience the same ‘side effect’ as you, Mr. Wayne,” Tirshi said carefully, as if organizing her thoughts.

“The side effects of variant magic differ from person to person.  It’s related to individual aptitude and genetic traits.”

“…I’m having trouble understanding.  What do you mean?”

Being knowledgeable didn’t mean you were good at teaching. Tirshi seemed to consider this as I struggled to understand.

“I can explain in detail, but it’ll take a while. Is that alright?”

“Yes, please.”

Tirshi nodded and fetched some blank paper and a pen from a shelf.  She drew two human figures.  Not as good as Francesca, but her penmanship was quite delicate.

“The origin of variant magic was to ‘alter the body to suit a desired aptitude.’  The lich, the ultimate goal of black mages, is an example.”

She drew an arrow next to one of the human figures.  At the tip of the arrow, she drew a skull.

“Black magic is powerful, but the user has to pay a price, right?  The reason for these penalties is that the human body can’t withstand the sinister mana.”

“Right.”

Black mages suffered from rotting flesh, infestations, and other nasty stuff every time they used magic. Their bodies were ravaged by the black mana, like wooden containers filled with sulfuric acid.

Bugs infesting a living body… the thought was so grotesque, I didn’t even want to imagine it.  But in exchange for these horrifying side effects, black magic in this world was incredibly powerful, like demonic arts in wuxia novels.

That’s why black mage hideouts were common dungeon types.

Why would someone hiding in a secluded spot and using self-destructive magic have good intentions?  Of course, they had to be exterminated like cockroaches.

“But if they transform their bodies into a lich or a demon, they gain an ‘aptitude’ for sinister mana.”

Tirshi’s pen moved quickly. The skull was now surrounded by a black aura.

“Liches don’t suffer from the penalties of black magic.  In magic, skulls and corpses symbolize death. For a lich, who is essentially undead, dark and yin mana are just sources of power.”

“…Is Beast Regression that kind of magic?”

“No. It’s not that sinister. But… Beast Regression’s side effects seem to be influenced by this ‘aptitude.’ The mana waveform resembles the BSK-type variant pattern reported in academia.”

BSK-type?  What the hell was that?

Wait, I think I heard that from Lucy earlier. Tirshi, sensing my confusion, quickly explained.

“BSK-type is short for ‘Berserk’ type. It refers to the same mana waveform as the ‘Beast Transformation’ magic used by Berserkers.”

Tirshi added cat ears and a tail to the human figure in the drawing.

Berserkers.

They were one of the three barbarian tribes, along with the Ulster and Vikings.

But they were the least prominent of the barbarian tribes.

Personally, I thought they were added just to make the “three barbarian tribes” sound better. There were no records of them leaving any significant mark on history.

They were weaker than the Ulster, and less savage and technologically advanced than the Vikings.

The Berserkers I knew were either crazy guys wielding giant swords or swordmasters going into a frenzy, but the Berserkers of this world were surprisingly… gentle.  Their name, which meant “to rage,” seemed ironic.

The reason these gentle people were called barbarians?

It was because Berserkers had animalistic features—they were beastmen.
