Chapter 8: Everyone Has Their Own Learning Style
October 31, 2020
During his earlier experiment, Ivan noticed a hidden factor: his existing knowledge base also affected his learning efficiency and speed.
This was why it only took about twenty minutes of the Genius Experience Card's time to finish reading A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration, while reading Fundamentals of Spell Theory took much longer—only half of it was completed in over thirty minutes.
The quick reading of A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration was partly due to Ivan's existing foundation in casting Transfiguration spells and partly because he had already read the book once before, giving him some familiarity with its content.
On the other hand, Fundamentals of Spell Theory covered a broader range of knowledge, and Ivan hadn't read it beforehand, so his reading speed was significantly slower.
After analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the Genius Experience Card, Ivan realized that to make the most of that one hour, the optimal strategy was to first read the relevant book once. Then, he could use the Genius Experience Card to enhance his comprehension and critical thinking for a thorough review. This would maximize the use of his time.
Moreover, fully understanding a magical book would reward him with academic points. Combined with the points earned from leveling up spells, Ivan could accumulate enough points to exchange for another Genius Experience Card. This cycle would allow his abilities to improve rapidly.
Earlier, Ivan had only read half of Fundamentals of Spell Theory, but all his spells had gained significant proficiency. The Levitation Charm and Disarming Charm, in particular, had reached Level 1, just like Transfiguration, earning him another ten academic points.
This brought Ivan's academic points back up to twenty, significantly reducing the time needed to save up for the next Genius Experience Card.
Thinking of this, Ivan glanced at the vast collection of magical books in the library and suddenly realized—these were all potential academic points!
If he could read them all, Ivan could hardly imagine how much his abilities would grow.
With this in mind, Ivan's determination was reignited.
However, things didn't go as planned. Just as Ivan was about to dive into his studies, he was informed that the library was closing.
It was only then that Ivan realized he had been in the library for over three hours.
"Children, learning is important, but so is balancing work and rest. Now, everyone, return to your dormitories!" Madam Pince shooed the students who were still lingering in the library.
As the Hogwarts librarian, she didn't dislike students who loved knowledge—as long as they didn't make a racket. However, the library's opening hours were set by the headmaster, and Madam Pince couldn't extend them.
Ivan approached her, holding the half-read Fundamentals of Spell Theory, and asked, "Madam, may I borrow this book?"
"Of course, as long as you return it within the specified time," Madam Pince glanced at the title and nodded casually.
After saying this, Madam Pince turned her attention to searching the library. There were always a few students who liked to hide among the books, trying to sneak into the Restricted Section after lights-out.
Of course, there were also those who got so engrossed in reading that they lost track of time.
"Thank you," Ivan nodded politely, then left the library with the book. He couldn't wait to try out the spells that had improved.
"Excuse me! Coming through!"
Before Ivan could take more than a few steps, he heard a clear female voice behind him. The next moment, he felt someone bump into him, sending his forehead crashing into the wall. He fell to the ground, and the Fundamentals of Spell Theory slipped from his hands.
Fortunately, the impact wasn't too hard. Ivan rubbed his slightly red forehead and got up.
He picked up the book first, then turned his attention to the girl who had bumped into him.
The first thing he noticed was her bushy brown hair, clearly neglected by its owner. Her standard wizard robes hung loosely on her frame, and a few magical books were scattered around her.
"Hermione?" Ivan was momentarily stunned but quickly figured out what had happened.
It seemed that Hermione, in her haste to leave the library after being shooed by Madam Pince, had accidentally run into him from behind.
"Ivan?" Hermione was also dazed from the collision. With Ivan's help, she managed to stand up. "Oh, I'm so sorry. I was a bit distracted and didn't see you there."
"It's fine. Just be more careful next time," Ivan handed her the books and shook his head, indicating that he didn't mind.
However, when Hermione saw the book in Ivan's hands, she immediately launched into a lecture.
"I've borrowed Fundamentals of Spell Theory before. It taught me so many new magical techniques.
Merlin's beard, I had no idea that strong intent could significantly increase the power of certain spells! But it requires a high level of magical control, or the spell might go haywire…"
At this point, Hermione seemed to remember something and raised her voice. "Oh, and learning requires understanding and memorization, not just flipping through the book from start to finish.
Instead of reading books like Fundamentals of Spell Theory, I think you should start by memorizing all your textbooks!"
Hermione poured out her thoughts—or rather, her advice—in a rapid-fire manner. While she likely meant well, her tone came off as condescending.
Ivan understood that Hermione must have seen him using the Genius Experience Card earlier and was trying to help. However, her haughty attitude made him frown slightly.
"Thanks for the advice, but I think everyone has their own learning style," Ivan said calmly. He was beginning to understand why Harry, Ron, and the other students didn't get along with the brilliant but overbearing Hermione.
It had to be said that before Halloween, Miss Granger's personality wasn't particularly likable.
"How could that be?"
Hermione was about to continue her lecture, but Ivan cut her off with action.
"Transfiguro!" Ivan waved his wand and tapped it lightly on the parchment Hermione was using for notes. The paper trembled slightly, then began to expand and transform. The rough surface of the parchment smoothed out, becoming flawless.
Right before Hermione's eyes, in just a second or two, Ivan completed the spell with a fluid motion, as precise as Professor McGonagall's demonstrations in class. The parchment had turned into a thin slab of jade.
