Chapter 2: The broken engagement.
"What!"
The words from Mrs. Miller was so sudden and unexpected that without even knowing, a voice came out of her throat.
Mrs. Miller said in a cold voice, staring at her.
"I said, how can you get engaged to my son, when you are already married?"
Chloe was taken aback by this sudden accusation.
What did she just say! I'm am married! Huh!
She looked at her carefully. Mrs. Miller was not a person who easily joked around, and seeing her cold and hardened face anyone could easily say that what she was saying, she was not joking anyway.
"Aunty, what are you saying? I don't get it. When did I get married!"
Chloe didn't hide the astonishment in her voice.
The people who were standing here and there, talking with each other while drinking, rushed over here. Everyone was shocked, just like her.
"What did she say, Chloe is married!"
"But how could this happen! Ms. Smith is with Mr. Miller for about two years!"
"But I think there is something for sure. Otherwise, why would Mrs. Miller accuse her!"
They started gossiping among themselves.
Mrs. Miller smiled sarcastically.
"Oh, so you don't know what is really happening. Fine. Then, explain this."
She took out a piece of paper from her purse and upholded it in front of her face. Curious, Chloe looked at it, and froze.
A marriage certificate!
In place of the bride and groom's name, there was written in bold clear Times New Roman font,
Bride: Chloe Smith
Groom: Brandon Reed
"What is this!"
"I am asking you the same question Chloe, what is this?"
She stood bewildered. She was unable to understand what actually was happening.
Mrs. Miller took a look at all the people standing there, then glanced at Mr. and Mrs. Smith. She went towards them and extended the certificate to them.
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith, can you please tell me what this is? Do you know that the daughter whose engagement you have arranged today, had already married someone named Brandon Reed, six months ago?"
Both of them were completely clueless. Mr. Smith took the paper and looked at it. To his surprise, what Mrs. Miller was saying was actually true!
Looking at their astonishment, Mrs. Miller smiled.
"It feels like your loving daughter didn't tell you anything also. I'm quite impressed at her secret sealing capabilities!"
"Can I take a look at it, Mrs. Miller?"
Someone from the crowd suddenly asked her. She handed it over to him, and soon it was passed from one to another, everyone shooking head in surprise.
"It's true! Chloe is actually married!"
"But how could she do it! This is unethical and illegal!"
"It's a shame!"
Various comments started coming from different directions. The engagement party turned into a chaos in no time.
....
Remembering everything, Chloe sighed again. How could she prove her innocence! She really didn't know from where the certificate came.
Ahe looked at the crowd and laughed inside her. Just a while ago, those people were praising them, telling that they looked together like a match made in heaven.
But see now!
They were busy judging her, her character.
She looked straight at Mrs. Miller.
"Aunty, how can I explain something that I can't remember I did? I really don't have any idea about this certificate, neither I know how it came in my closet's drawer."
"So, you won't accept it! Fine, very fine."
"Sorry to say, but yes aunty. I cannot accept anything that I really don't know."
Mrs. Miller was frustrated. Even when she presented the proof at her, still she was arguing!
She thanked God, thankfully she could reach the venue just when the engagement started. Otherwise, this woman would throw herself upon her son.
Mrs. Miller went to the parlour for a spa. She was a little late, so she was rushing towards the venue when suddenly her phone rang. It was from Chloe's sister, Clara. She told her that Chloe forgot her brooch and as she was on her way if she could bring it. Mrs. Miller didn't have a problem. She was nearer to Smith's residence, so she asked where it was.
Upon reaching, she entered Chloe's room. The brooch was in a red velvet box in her closet's drawer. She casually opened the drawer and took out the box, that was when her wyes fell on something.
It was a certificate. She just glanced at it curiously abd found out that it was a marriage certificate!
"Whose marriage certificate is this?" She took it out out of curiosity. Did Chase marry secretly! Or it was of her friend!
She thought.
But as soon as she looked at it, she was startled!
It was actually her soon to be daughter in law's certificate. The date written showed that it was issued about six months ago. Chloe was actually married.
Like all the people in the venue, she was also startled at first. But as her mind settled, her anger arose.
How could she do that to their family! What did she think about them, a bunch of fools!
She entered her car and asked the driver to rush towards the venue in the highest speed possible.
....
Chloe found a cold gaze fell upon her. Mrs. Miller took a while, then finally spoke. Her voice was cold as ice.
"Since you don't know what happened actually, I also think there is no need to pressure you. Take your time and think whatever you can think. But the engagement is not gonna take place, anyway."
"What!"
"She's breaking the engagement!"
The sound of muttering came to her ears. She looked at her straight just as ahe was looking earlier.
"Even at this age, you are really forgetful. You can't remember anything even when you created this mess yourself. But as a mother, I can't drag my son into this mess. So I'm breaking off the engagement. There will be no further engagements within the Smith and the Miller family."
