Harry Potter:blood legacy

Chapter 18: ch-18

"There's no need to worry," the elderly wizard smiled kindly. "I apologize, but I summoned you here to discuss your friend," he explained the reason for the meeting.

"His name is Jet," Harry corrected him, trying to keep his voice polite.

"Jet? Quite an interesting name. May I ask why you chose it?" the Headmaster asked, or at least pretended to be genuinely curious.

"I just liked the name."

"I see. Ah, yes, forgive me, Harry, I should have started with introductions. Of course, you know Professors McGonagall and Flitwick," Dumbledore said, gesturing to each teacher, both of whom nodded at Harry. "They are the Heads of Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. Professor Sprout is the Head of Hufflepuff, and Professor Snape is the Head of your house, Slytherin. Now, I—"

Whatever the Headmaster was about to say was interrupted by a melodious trill. A moment later, a bird flew into the office and landed on the previously unoccupied perch. The creature was as large as a swan, with black eyes, black talons, a long golden beak, scarlet feathers, and a golden tail as long as a peacock's.

"A magical bird," Jet hissed softly into Harry's ear.

"Ah, Mr. Potter, may I introduce you to Fawkes."

"Fawkes?" Harry echoed. "Uh… did you name him after Guy Fawkes?" he asked, glancing between the Headmaster and the bird.

"Why, yes, of course," Dumbledore replied, smiling as though delighted that someone knew who Guy Fawkes was.

"May I ask why, Professor?"

"Fawkes is a phoenix," the Headmaster explained calmly. "From time to time, he bursts into flames and is reborn from the ashes. Fawkes is, in fact, my familiar," Dumbledore added with a smile.

Harry studied the phoenix closely, the bird returning his gaze with equal interest before shifting its focus to Jet.

"Don't even think about harming my master!" Jet hissed in warning. The bird tilted its head, observing them for a few seconds, before emitting a soft trill as if to say, "Do not worry, I mean neither of you any harm."

"I dare say our familiars might get along well," Dumbledore commented, looking questioningly at Harry.

"Jet is just being protective," Harry replied, lifting the snake onto his lap and gently stroking him.

"Most familiars are," the elderly wizard nodded in understanding.

"Dumbledore," Snape interjected impatiently, speaking for the first time. "Can we move on to the matter at hand? I have other tasks to attend to today."

"Ah, of course," the Headmaster sighed. "Harry, the professors here today are the Heads of Houses. Professor Babbling is also present because she was the one who introduced you to the magical world and confirmed that Jet is your familiar. I must admit, it's rare for students to have familiars; most only have pets. Now, you don't mind if I cast a spell to confirm that Jet is indeed your familiar, do you?"

"But Professor Babbling already did that," Harry reminded him.

"This is not a matter of distrust in her or her magical abilities, but as the Heads of Houses, we need to be certain. Please, sit still," Dumbledore requested, drawing his wand and waving it toward the first-year and his snake. Both briefly glowed blue, a sight that seemed to satisfy the Headmaster. "Ah, yes, you two are indeed bonded."

"Mr. Potter," Professor McGonagall spoke up. "We do not wish to separate you from your familiar, but surely you understand our concerns about the safety of keeping a snake in the school."

"I understand, Professor," Harry nodded. "And I have a few counterpoints to make."

"Oh, I'm sure we're all eager to hear what you have to say," Snape drawled. Harry was tempted to ask what the man's problem was, but he decided now was probably not the best time.

"First of all, I want to make it clear that if anyone tries to take Jet away from me, we'll both leave the school."

Every teacher, except Dumbledore and Snape, looked surprised. They could hardly believe Harry Potter would leave Hogwarts, given the opportunity to learn magic. The Headmaster, however, understood. Few witches and wizards had familiars, but Harry did, and Dumbledore knew the bond between a wizard and their familiar. If Fawkes weren't immortal and capable of defending himself, Dumbledore would expend all his magic protecting him. Snape, on the other hand, interpreted the boy's words differently.

"Typical Potter," the Potions Master sneered. "Like your father, you haven't even started your education, and you're already making demands."

"Actually, that was an ultimatum," Harry corrected calmly. He noted that Snape seemed to know his father, but decided it was better not to ask. It was clear the Potions Master disliked James, and anything he said would likely be biased.

"Professor Snape," McGonagall intervened before Snape could retort. "Might I suggest you show some professionalism?"

"Severus," Dumbledore also turned to him. "Mr. Potter's reaction is entirely understandable. Witches and wizards are deeply attached to their familiars."

"Thank you," Harry nodded to both the Headmaster and the Gryffindor Head of House before continuing. "Second, you're exaggerating how dangerous Jet is. He won't attack anyone unless they attack him or me. Furthermore, Professor McGonagall, you might recall my conversation with Mr. Weasley. Cats are allowed at Hogwarts despite being creatures that kill for sport. My snake, on the other hand, will only kill in self-defense or for food. Speaking of food, he can hunt rats and mice, and if that's not possible, I'm sure the house-elves would gladly provide him with something to eat."

"Oh, you're already aware of the house-elves?" Dumbledore asked, raising an eyebrow.

"One of the older Slytherin students told me about them, sir."

"Mr. Potter," Professor Sprout interjected. "How long have you been able to speak to snakes?"

"For as long as I can remember, Professor."

"Have you spoken to other snakes?"

"Yes, once at a zoo and with all the snakes near where I live."

"What do you talk to them about, if you don't mind me asking?"

"Pretty much anything I want," Harry shrugged slightly. "Though, aside from Jet, they're not particularly intelligent."

"How fascinating," Flitwick remarked. "Have you ever tried speaking to other animals?"

"Yes, I've tried with dogs, cats, spiders, insects, mice, and rats. They couldn't understand me, and I couldn't understand them," Harry admitted honestly before turning to Dumbledore. "So, Professor, does this mean I can keep Jet?" he asked just as the snake climbed up his arm and settled on his shoulders.

"I daresay you may," the Headmaster nodded. "But before you leave, Mr. Potter, I'd like to ask you one last question. It's about your scar."

"My scar, sir?" Harry asked in surprise, his hand almost rising to touch it before he stopped himself.

"I just wanted to ask if it causes you any pain," Dumbledore clarified, leaning forward slightly.

"Not that I'm aware of, sir," Harry replied, wondering why the Headmaster was so interested in it.
