Harry Potter:blood legacy

Chapter 15: ch-15

Eventually, when they finally reached the hall, Harry sat down at the Slytherin table with relief, while Angela took a seat across from him. He paid little attention to the way all the students entering the hall stared at him, noticing the snake resting on his shoulder.

"I'm hungry," Jet hissed.

"What did he say?" Angela asked, seemingly uninterested, as she took a sip of her juice.

"He's hungry," Harry translated. "Back where we lived before, I just let him hunt rats and eat insects or whatever else he could sink his… fangs into. I'm not sure if that's a good idea here, at least not until I get a better sense of the castle."

"Hm, you can call an elf and ask them to bring something for him to eat," Angela suggested.

"An elf?"

"House-elves are creatures born to serve witches and wizards. Some of the less educated members of the wizarding world consider their work to be slavery."

"Is it slavery?" Harry asked in a quiet voice, hardly wanting to make another creature work for him as the Dursleys had made him work for them.

"Not exactly. History shows that elves genuinely love to work. If you tell them they can't, they'll either wait or find something else they consider work. It's part of their way of life. Watch this: May I summon a Hogwarts house-elf here?" Angela called into the air.

A second later, a creature appeared next to them, about two to three feet tall, with thin arms and legs and enormous eyes. It had bat-like ears and, instead of normal clothing, it wore a pillowcase draped over its body. Harry jumped in his seat at its sudden appearance, and Jet immediately assumed a defensive posture, hissing threateningly, causing the elf to squeak and jump back.

"It's alright," Angela assured them, addressing both Harry and Jet, as well as the house-elf. "This is one of Hogwarts' house-elves."

"Calm down," Harry hissed to the snake, who indeed relaxed a moment later.

"You… you're Harry Potter?!" the elf spoke in broken English, its high-pitched, squeaky voice laced with reverence.

"Obviously," Harry nodded, glancing questioningly at Angela.

"Hogwarts' house-elves are responsible for cleaning and cooking," she explained.

"Hm." Harry turned his attention back to the strange creature. "My friend—the snake—is hungry. Could you bring him something to eat?"

"Of course!" the elf squeaked, recovering from its shock. "Flipsy will take care of it."

"Who's Flipsy?"

"I'm Flipsy!" the elf proudly straightened up, revealing herself to be female.

"Hm, I see. By the way, you speak English very well," Harry nodded with a neutral expression.

"Thank you, great Harry Potter!" Flipsy's chest puffed up at what she considered a genuine compliment. "What would Harry Potter's snake like to eat?"

"Rats, mice, small lizards, meat—anything smaller than him."

"He's carnivorous," Angela added. "That means he eats only meat, not plants," she explained when Flipsy looked confused.

"Oh, Flipsy has some meat left. Will it do for Harry Potter's snake?"

"Yes, thank you," Harry nodded, though he frowned when she looked like she might faint. "Did I do something wrong?"

"Great Harry Potter thanks Flipsy?" the elf whispered in disbelief, staring at him like he was a god. "Harry Potter is even greater than they say! I will bring his snake some meat!" she promised happily before disappearing with a soft pop.

"What did I do?" Harry asked Angela, bewildered.

"House-elves are rarely thanked. Most people don't bother because they either don't respect them or think they should just be happy to have work," Angela explained.

Harry frowned but said nothing more when a plate with a large piece of meat appeared beside him.

"I guess that's for you," he said, and Jet quickly slithered off his shoulder onto the table and began to eat.

"Potter," a familiar voice said as Daphne sat down next to him, with Tracey cautiously settling beside Angela, hoping that the key to not alarming Jet was to avoid sudden movements. "You made quite the impression yesterday," Daphne remarked lazily.

"Did I?"

"Yes," Tracey confirmed as the rest of the Slytherin first-years entered the hall. "I heard the upper years talking about it this morning." The other first-years sat a little further away from Harry and the others, as though afraid he might sic his snake on them, except for one.

"Good morning, everyone," Blaise greeted as he took a seat next to his sister.

"Good morning. By the way, I wanted to apologize to you," Harry said, addressing him.

"Apologize?" Blaise blinked in confusion. "For what?"

"I feel like I might have put you in an awkward position yesterday. If you feel forced to be my roommate and want to switch, I'll understand."

"I… wow…" Blaise looked very surprised, and if Harry had been looking at Angela, he would have seen a smile on her face. "Um, thanks, but it's cool. Having a Parselmouth as a roommate provides more protection than anywhere else," he shrugged. "And I still can't believe you cursed a sixth-year twice!" the boy added with a grin.

"What can I say? I just seized the moment."

"Mr. Potter," Professor McGonagall's voice called as she approached him. "Is this your familiar?" she asked, eyeing the snake warily.

"Yes, Professor."

"Mr. Potter, Professor Babbling informed me and the other staff that this snake…"

"Jet," Harry clarified.

"Pardon me?"

"His name is Jet, Professor," the boy elaborated.

"Very well. If Jet is to stay at the school, he must be kept under control. No one needs him biting anyone."

"Professor, I can promise you that he'll only bite someone in self-defense or to protect me," Harry assured her, and Jet hissed softly. "He says he promises not to bite anyone without good reason."

"You can talk to him?" McGonagall breathed, her face displaying a mix of emotions, including disbelief.

"Yes. Didn't Professor Babbling tell you?"

"She did," McGonagall admitted quietly. "But hearing and believing are two very different things. You will be allowed to bring your snake to classes today, though the teachers will keep a close eye on both of you. At the end of the day, I will escort you to the headmaster. He wishes to discuss your…" she paused, seemingly searching for the right word. "…friend."

"Alright," Harry agreed, and McGonagall, nodding in return, walked away. Harry glanced at Jet and blinked, noticing Daphne happily stroking the snake's head with her finger.

"Jet?"

"I like this human. I'm keeping her," the snake declared.

"You can't keep a human."

"Why not? You keep me and that owl; why can't I have two humans?"

"…Fair point."

"What did he say?" Daphne asked, curious about their conversation.

"He said he wants to keep you," Harry replied simply before returning to his meal.

"Keep… me?" Daphne echoed.
