Chapter 63: Chapter 63- VS Shiratorizawa (Part 3)
The game was in the middle of the first set, and after a point from Tanaka, the score was 14-12 for Karasuno when Washijo called a timeout.
"HEY! YOU IDIOTS! ARE YOU REALLY GONNA LET THAT KID KEEP SCORING ON YOU ALL THE TIME?! YOU NEED TO FIND A WAY TO STOP HIM!" Washijo yelled furiously, pointing at Hinata.
"Sorry, Coach. When the game resumes, we'll score more than them and win," Ushijima said confidently.
"We need to do something about our defense!" Washijo said, now a little calmer.
"Leave that to me, I'm already working on it…" Tendou said with a creepy grin.
"Alright, we have the lead, but it's not a big one. I'm sure they haven't shown their full potential yet… and neither have we. But you guys need to stay sharp and keep scoring," Ukai said while watching Shiratorizawa's bench.
"Stopping Ushiwaka's spikes isn't easy. We only got a break when he rotated to the back row, and they didn't use him as much..." Daichi sighed.
"Tell me about it. He's practically tearing through our blocks… At least Hinata is doing the same to theirs," Asahi observed.
"For now…" Hinata muttered thoughtfully.
"What do you mean by that?" Kageyama asked.
"That red-haired guy… he hasn't done much yet, but I'm sure he's gonna be a problem," Hinata explained.
"Yeah, you're right… he hasn't started doing those things yet…" Kageyama muttered.
The game resumed after the timeout, with Shirabu serving for Shiratorizawa, aiming at Hinata in the back row.
"Relax, I got this!" Hinata said as he received the ball and passed it to Kageyama, who positioned himself under it. Just as the ball was about to touch his fingers, he caught Tendou staring at him—his expression looked like some airheaded fool lost in the clouds. Kageyama decided to set a quick attack to Tsukishima in the middle. As Tsukishima was about to jump, he noticed Tendou moving rapidly and jumping at nearly the same time as Kageyama set the ball.
"CLANG!"
The sound of the ball slamming onto Karasuno's court after Tendou's block echoed through the stadium.
"Ohh… what a delicious block!" Tendou said, looking way too pleased with himself.
"I'm sure I didn't give away any sign that I was setting to Tsukishima… This guy is insane…" Kageyama thought.
"So it's true that this guy blocks purely on intuition," Tanaka muttered.
"Tsk! Even though I knew about it… I still got blocked," Tsukishima thought, annoyed.
Next, Shirabu served again, this time targeting Daichi.
"Mine!" Daichi called, passing to Kageyama.
"Nice receive!" Kageyama said, preparing to set.
"After being brutally blocked… the ball is obviously going… HERE!" Tendou thought as he jumped to block Hinata, who was attacking from the back row. Seeing Tendou in front of him, Hinata decided to aim for the deep corner, trying to send the ball past Tendou's hands.
"No, no, no!" Tendou shouted, abruptly turning his hands.
"Clang!"
Hinata's spike hit Tendou's hands and bounced back into Karasuno's court.
"You said you wanted to beat Wakatoshi… but it doesn't look like you can," Tendou teased with a sadistic grin.
"Nice one! You got me that time!" Hinata said, smiling as he turned away.
"What kind of reaction is that?!" Tendou huffed, slightly irritated.
"There he is, the 'Guess Monster'!" someone from Karasuno's stands said.
"What does that mean?" Saeko asked.
"That red-haired guy has a blocking style where he tries to guess the attacker based on his reads, relying a lot on intuition. That's where the nickname comes from," Shimada explained.
"Great! First, we had to deal with their number one, and now we have this crazy guy!" Saeko complained.
Shirabu served again toward Karasuno's court.
"Nishinoya!" Daichi called as he saw the ball heading toward him.
"All good!" Nishinoya said, receiving and passing the ball to Kageyama, who was preparing to set.
"Let's see… HERE!" Tendou thought as he preemptively jumped toward Tanaka in position four. However, Kageyama set a quick to Tsukishima instead, who slammed the ball down.
"Damn it! I guessed wrong!" Tendou shouted, having jumped in the wrong direction.
"Yeah, and sometimes he makes ridiculous mistakes like that. Haha," Shimada chuckled.
"HEY, SATORI! THAT WAS TERRIBLE!" Washijo yelled.
Now it was Kageyama's turn to serve.
"Kageyama, put some power into the serve!" Daichi shouted as he watched Kageyama's serve fly over the net toward Shirabu, who quickly switched places with Goshiki, allowing him to receive.
"Nice receive!" Shirabu said.
"Ushijima-san!" Shirabu called as he set a classic toss to Ushijima. Jumping up, Ushijima faced a triple block from Hinata, Tanaka, and Tsukishima.
"BOOM!"
The sound of the ball blasting off Tsukishima's fingertips echoed through the stadium as it flew out of bounds.
For the next few plays, most of Shiratorizawa's attacks went to Ushiwaka, who kept hitting over the block, mainly targeting Tsukishima. Tsukishima was clearly bothered but not frustrated.
After Shiratorizawa's last point, Ukai called a timeout when the score reached 21-17 in Shiratorizawa's favor.
"Damn it! We're giving up too many points in a row!" Saeko complained.
"Looks like your brother is struggling," Takinoue said.
"Yeah, but he's not the type to get flustered by this. Every time he gets beaten, he's thinking about how to counter it," Akiteru said, watching Tsukishima lost in thought.
"With Ushiwaka and Tendou dominating, we're struggling to score. We need to use that attack," Ukai said, looking at Hinata and Kageyama.
"I'm ready! Let's do this!" Hinata said excitedly.
"Got it," Kageyama nodded.
The game resumed with Reon serving toward Daichi.
"IT'S MINE!" Daichi called, receiving the ball and passing it to Kageyama.
"Nice receive!" Kageyama said, noticing Tendou's stare once again. Looking across the net, he saw Hinata already in the air. As the ball was about to touch his fingers, in the blink of an eye, it was already slamming into Hinata's hands and shooting toward Shiratorizawa's court—too fast for anyone to react.
"NICE!" Kageyama celebrated.
"Perfect!" Hinata grinned, pointing at Kageyama.
"LET'S TURN THIS GAME AROUND!" Tanaka shouted excitedly.
"Hmm, so this is the weird attack…" Tendou muttered, narrowing his eyes at Hinata.
On the next play, Kageyama attempted another super quick attack. Tendou tried to anticipate it, but by the time the ball hit Hinata's hands, it was already too high to block.
On the following attack, Tendou focused on Hinata, but the ball went to Tanaka instead, who won against a single blocker—Hinata had been just a decoy this time.
"TIMEOUT! TIMEOUT!" Washijo shouted.
"HEY! YOU NEED TO FIND A WAY TO STOP NUMBER TEN!" Washijo yelled.
"I need time… I need time to figure out how to stop him," Tendou muttered, looking darker than usual.
"How much time?" Ushijima asked.
"This entire set," Tendou replied.
"You want us to give up on this set?!" Goshiki asked, shocked.
"FINE! AS LONG AS YOU FIGURE OUT A WAY TO STOP THAT KID!" Washijo barked.
The first set ended with Karasuno taking the win, 25-23. But every time they scored, Tendou watched them like he was analyzing every move.
