Guardian of the Shadows

Chapter 3: Stealth

Brains in the Shadows

The story begins on a routine night patrol for Alex and Maya. They had only recently started to work as a duo, each honing their powers and getting accustomed to the weight of heroism. Their growing confidence, however, led to a blind spot they weren't prepared for.

The Incident

The night was uncommonly still, the air thick with a silence that felt somehow wrong. It was into this that Alex and Maya moved, navigating the alleyways of Lumina City until a sudden burst of light exploded from a nearby warehouse; screams followed, and the two bolted toward the source.

A few scientists cowered in the warehouse, pinned down by some huge mechanical drone, its legs pointed and spider-like, its core glowing menacingly. The laser-guided shots it repressed melted everything they touched, leaving no safe cover.

"Stay here!" Alex whispered to Maya, his speed allowing him to cut across in a zigzag above the lasers. But even his agility couldn't overcome the machine's almost-living premonition of his movements and firing on and on.

Maya called up a wall of water to obstruct Alex, but the drone somehow understood this in less than a second and let out a piercingly loud sound wave that disrupted her powers.

"This thing's smarter than anything we've faced," Maya shouted, beading sweat on her brow.

Before Alex could utter anything, a figure emerged from the darkness-a petite girl with oversized goggles and clutching a sleek wrist device.

"Move left, now!" the stranger shouted.

Confused but desperate, Alex did what he was told. To the left he veered, the laser from the drone hitting a weak pillar, loosening part of the roof; it stuttered, recalibrating.

"Keep it busy!" she yelled again, fingers dancing across her wrist device as she worked her way into the drone's system. Sparks shot from its legs as it buckled, the glow in its midsection sputtering.

Maya followed suit, flinging pieces of ice at the drone to further distract it. With a triumphant beep from the girl's device, the drone finally collapsed, its legs folding under its body.

Ashley's Background Revealed

"Who the hell are you?" Alex said, his shadow blades still out.

The girl pulled off her goggles, revealing sharp brown eyes and a cocky smirk. "Ashley Carter. Tech prodigy, part-time troublemaker. You're welcome."

"You just. hacked that thing," Maya said, her voice equally awed and suspicious.

"Yeah, because you two were about to get fried," Ashley quipped, gesturing to the drone. "That's experimental military tech. Way too advanced for regular goons. Someone's pulling strings here, and you clearly need someone who can handle the technical side."

Alex and Maya exchanged a glance; they didn't really deal with outsiders, but Ashley had just saved their lives.

"Why were you even here?" asked Alex.

For the first time, Ashley's confident demeanor faltered. "Let's just say I don't like bullies, especially the ones that come with toys like this. I've been tracking them for weeks, trying to find out who is giving the orders."

Over the next several days, Ashley proved her worth and helped Alex and Maya track the origin of the drone down to a shadowy tech conglomerate and the nefarious plans of this group to arm the infrastructure around the city.

Ashley was intelligent but resourceful in most aspects, making gadgets for building the elemental powers in Maya and letting Alex have manipulative means around his shadow capability with more preciseness. This knack for strategy molded the two into a really well-coordinated team.

But she also brought a dose of humor and humanity to their mission. Ashley's sarcastic remarks and quick wit balanced out Alex's seriousness and Maya's intensity. Despite her bravado, she had a softer side, often staying up late to patch Alex's wounds or encourage Maya when she doubted herself.

The final test of their partnership came in the form of an ambush. The trio was cornered by a mass of drones in an abandoned subway station, with no real way to escape.

"Get out! I can hold them off!" Ashley yelled, furiously typing on her device to disable the drones.

"We're not leaving you!" Maya yelled back, her hands afire.

"You can't stop them without me!" Ashley snapped.

Alex clasped Ashley's wrist, and his voice refused to waver. "And we can't win without you. We are in this together, whether you like it or not."

For the first time, Ashley felt she was not a solo hacker but a part of something much larger.

United, the trio fought together as they joined their powers and abilities in defeating the drones. When finally the battle ended, their bonding became inseparable.

Later, when they were all assembled again in their hideout, Alex turned to them and asked, "So, are you in? For real, this time?"

Ashley smiled. "As long as you don't make me wear some dumb superhero suit."

Maya laughed. "No promises."

From that day forward, Ashley was the brains of their operation, the glue that held them together. She didn't have powers, but her intelligence, courage, and loyalty made her an integral part of the team.
