Chapter 497: The Last Memory Spheres ( 8 )
"Let me see what's up there…" Axis muttered as she flew up.
However, she realized that she couldn't pass through a certain line mid-air…
"What's going on here? I lack the access to enter… How is this even possible?"
Axis hovered in the air, her tiny wings glowed faintly as she approached the mystical force that blocked her path to the floating island.
She reached out with her hands and she felt the firm raw magic creating the invisible barrier. It was like a gentle but unyielding wall… This invisible wall seemed to only harden if she tried to forcefully pass through it.
She had no idea that this realm was even capable of doing something like that.
"What is this?" Axis murmured, pressing her hands harder against the barrier. The shimmering golden light rippled outward in response, but it did not give way.
She fluttered back slightly, her brows furrowed in frustration. "Why can't I get through? This is part of our realm now! I should be able to go anywhere here!"
Axis wasn't one to give up easily. She darted left and right, searching for a weak spot in the shield. At one point, she even tried flying at it at full speed, hoping that her momentum would carry her through.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
She tried several times but instead of passing through the barrier, she bounced back with a soft "Oof!" and tumbled mid-air before regaining her balance.
"Okay, that didn't work," she muttered, rubbing her forehead.
Next, she tried tapping into the mana of the realm, drawing on the abundant energy that surrounded her. Explore more at empire
She placed her hands together, whispered an incantation, and sent a burst of sparkling magic at the barrier.
Thud…
The spell fizzled out the moment it touched the invisible shield, as though it had been swallowed whole.
"Ugh…"
Axis crossed her arms and pouted. "This is unfair. I'm the one taking care of this place! If anyone deserves to see that island, it's me!"
She hovered in place for a moment, staring at the floating island with longing.
The trees on its surface seemed to wave gently. She even noticed that some of them had golden or silver leaves that made the place look magical.
There were also mana-infused waterfalls cascaded from its edges which seemed to circulate within the floating island. It was such a beautiful sight and she knew that going there would be even more incredible.
After some time, realization dawned on her.
She knew she had to accept it. "This isn't just a barrier. It's keyed to someone specific. No doubt about it… Only the Master can get through." She murmured.
Axis sighed and let her shoulders slump. "Of course. It's because this whole realm belongs to Shane. He's the one who inherited it, after all."
She hovered for a few moments longer, gazing wistfully at the island. Then, with a resigned shrug, she turned and began her descent back to the ground.
"I guess it's not my time yet," she said softly. "But when Master Shane comes, I'll make sure he knows what I've been through. Maybe he'll let me visit the island with him."
Axis then chucked after saying this…
Then, as she landed near the World Tree, Axis's mood lifted slightly.
The vibrant crops and herbs growing in the fields caught her attention. She noticed that many of them had ripened unusually quickly, their colors richer and their auras stronger than ever before.
Needless to say, the mana that had flooded the realm during its transformation must have accelerated their growth.
Axis clapped her hands together... "Well, at least I can harvest these beauties! They're practically glowing with mana!"
She grabbed a woven basket from a nearby shed and began her work. She started with the flowers that had their petals radiating soft blue light.
Next, she moved on to the root crops, pulling them gently from the soil.
Then she turned to the gourds hanging from the vines. There were also various kinds of berries that needed to be harvested.
Axis even popped one into her mouth and giggled as the burst of sweet, tangy flavor filled her senses.
As Axis worked, she hummed a cheerful tune, like there weren't any problems at all…
She moved through the fields, harvesting and tending to the plants with care. The realm felt alive and she couldn't help but feel a deep sense of pride.
By the time she finished, her baskets were overflowing with crops and herbs. She wiped her brow and looked around, satisfied.
"Master Shane is going to be so impressed when he sees all this," she said with a smile. Then she glanced up at the floating island one last time. "And when he comes back, we'll figure out what that place is all about. Until then, I'll make sure everything here stays perfect."
With that, Axis carried the basket back toward her cozy little hut, ready to prepare the fresh harvest for when Shane returned…
***
A few moments ago, as Shane absorbed the final memory sphere, a vast amount of knowledge and emotions overwhelmed him.
This memory sphere seemed to contain decades of memories, unlike the previous ones!
Shane knew that it would take quite some time to absorb all of this.
The images unfolded like a vivid dream, and he found himself walking through a history he had lived but had long forgotten.
"This…"
Shane was shocked as he watched the twenty years that had passed in the merged world of Earth and the Fairy Realm.
Indeed, such a long time had passed and Shane's hadn't completed the Apocalypse yet!
Shane had watched as the remnants of humanity dwindled and finally disappeared, leaving him as the sole human in a world dominated by mystical races—elves, dwarves, centaurs, druids, trolls, and more.
Then, as he absorbed the memories he remembered his life with these races, forming friendships, learning their ways, and finding a strange solace in their acceptance of him.
Over time, he became not just a leader of resistance but a bridge between their worlds.
At this time, the earth itself had transformed. Its landscapes were now infused with magic or perhaps mana. The forests suddenly had crystalline trees, rivers rich with mana, and mountains that were emitting some ancient energy.
'The invasion wasn't stopped… I guess this can be called a bad ending, huh…' Shane muttered as he guessed that the system had decided that he had failed to fight against the Fairy Realm's invasion.
Its full integration into Earth was proof of it.
'Then… Will I stay here forever?' Shane thought as he wasn't sure what he should do right now. The system wasn't giving him any quests or events either.
Perhaps, the system had forgotten that there was still a survivor or that the mission was too obvious that there was no need for any system prompts at all.
Anyway, Shane continued to remember his past. Soon, he saw the day he was summoned to the palace of the Fairy Queen. She wasn't on par with the Kings and Queens of other races…
With was the Queen not just of a single race but of the whole realm!
Anyway, the palace itself was an ethereal structure… It was a structure that humans couldn't possibly make even with a high level of technology because it was simply magical.
The Fairy Queen was unlike anything he had imagined—a being of pure elegance. Her presence was imposing yet she seemed really gentle.
Her silver hair flowed up to her knees and her eyes were actually closed.
Shane wasn't sure if she was blind, or if it was simply her habit, or if there was a deeper reason behind it.
Anyway, due to the decades of peace they had in this land, he spoke to Shane not as a ruler, but as someone deeply aware of the burden he carried.
Then, she revealed a startling truth: the apocalypse they endured was indeed not a natural disaster or even a random event. It was orchestrated by higher beings from realms beyond their understanding, beings who saw these apocalypses as a form of entertainment and a way to test mortals for ascension.
This was similar to what he learned in the A.I. Rebellion Apocalypse.
To end the apocalypse and claim the rewards promised by the system, Shane would have to kill her. She was the anchor that bound the Fairy Realm to this chaotic experiment!
As soon as he learned of this, Shane couldn't help but feel curious whether he actually killed this Fairy Queen.
Anyway, he watched his memories curiously and confirmed that he really refused. At the very least, he tried.
He couldn't bring himself to destroy the very person who had helped maintain balance in this world. The Fairy Queen had not only guided her people but had also aided him in surviving and thriving in this transformed realm over the past few years.
After he was rejected, the Fairy Queen didn't push him…
Nonetheless, in the next few years, he learned from her... He started studying ancient techniques, forbidden magic, and secrets of the higher realms.
