Chapter 29: Greedy Lei Dianying: "I Am Just a Child."
"Why not kill them?" Lei Yingying asked.
Kujo Takayuki had been taken into custody, but Hiiragi Shinsuke was let off just because he paid protection money? These two had the power to throw all of Inazuma into chaos, and Lei Yingying thought they deserved death. Even if they hadn't directly caused Inazuma's current troubles, they still deserved punishment.
But then the general had said something that caught Lei Yingying off guard: fewer people had died in recent years than during the Demon War. The general's statement made her pause. Could it be that the number of people who perished was as bad as during the Demon War? The thought was sobering.
"I'm an executive officer of the Fatui," Su Ran said, holding Lei Dianying. "We've finally managed to muddy the waters of Inazuma. Killing one is enough for now; do you want me to kill another?"
Lei Yingying remained silent. She couldn't help but think, With your power, why work for the Fatui?
"And besides," Su Ran continued, "what's the point of killing them?"
Su Ran gazed down at Lei Dianying, who sat in his arms, a small, cute figure that made him more and more satisfied the longer he looked at her. "Do you want to take one last look at Inazuma before the eternal dream is established? Maybe you won't see it again in the future."
---
Walking through the streets of Inazuma City, Kamisato Ayaka looked worried. The people around her didn't seem to be taking the idea of the eternal dream seriously. Even when it was discussed, it felt more like idle chatter than genuine concern.
"Ayaka!"
A fiery, energetic girl ran up to Kamisato Ayaka and playfully patted her shoulder. "Why do you look so down? Didn't sleep well last night?"
Seeing the familiar face of the girl next to her, Kamisato Ayaka smiled softly. "It's you, Yoimiya... I've just been thinking about the dream the general mentioned."
The two began walking together.
"Dream? You mean the one without illness, aging, or pain?" Yoimiya asked. To her, the eternal dream that General Raiden spoke of seemed like nothing more than a story, something too far removed from reality to worry about. No matter how long a dream lasts, she thought, people will eventually wake up.
"You've spent a lot of time with the general lately, Ayaka. You must know more about this dream, right?" Yoimiya asked, thinking that Kamisato Ayaka might have more insight, given her time in the castle.
"This dream is one that the three gods are working to establish together," Ayaka said softly. "But for mortals, entering the dream means completely losing their physical bodies. It's terrifying, no matter how you think about it."
Kamisato Ayaka hesitated to tell Yoimiya more about the dream. She didn't want to burden her with such dark thoughts. After all, despite Yoimiya's occasional resistance to the Vision Hunt Decree, she was just an ordinary mortal. Ayaka didn't want her to get too entangled with the gods.
Yoimiya, noticing Ayaka's reluctance, grew puzzled. "Is this another terrible idea, like the Vision Hunt Decree or the Sakoku Decree?" she asked.
"It'll be okay... we'll find a way," Kamisato Ayaka said with a sigh, forcing a smile. With only one day left before she returned to the gods, she decided it was better to enjoy her time while she could. "I heard there's a stall nearby that makes dango milk. Let's go try it."
Yoimiya, sensing that Ayaka didn't want to say more, decided to drop the subject. She knew Ayaka well enough to understand her determination. If this dream turned out to be truly dangerous, Ayaka wouldn't stop fighting. She trusted Ayaka to handle it.
"Okay, let's go! I've heard that the snacks at that stall are really popular," Yoimiya agreed enthusiastically.
The two continued walking until they reached the dango milk stall. Yoimiya rushed ahead excitedly, while Kamisato Ayaka paused, staring in disbelief at the figure standing by the stall.
---
"How does it taste?" Su Ran asked as he handed a dango milk to Lei Dianying and took a sip of his own.
"It's okay," Su Ran thought. After all, this is Teyvat, a world without modern food additives. The food might be healthier, but the taste was definitely less exciting. According to the original storyline, this was supposed to be where the Traveler accompanied Lei Dianying to try dango milk. But now, Su Ran had taken the Traveler's place, and the timeline had shifted forward.
As Lei Dianying finished her dango milk, her eyes drifted to Su Ran's still half-full bottle. Su Ran noticed her greedy gaze and reluctantly handed her his share.
"I'm really scared of you," he said with a chuckle. "Why are you acting like a child?"
Lei Dianying accepted the dango milk without hesitation, not the least bit embarrassed. "I am a child," she said with a smirk. Her current body was not that of the general's, but rather a petite, doll-like form. In this appearance, there was no issue with claiming to be a child. After all, she wasn't about to admit in front of others that she was the Raiden Shogun.
"Wow! What a cute little one!" Yoimiya exclaimed, having spotted Lei Dianying in Su Ran's arms. She was instantly charmed. Despite the issues with General Raiden's governance, it hadn't lessened people's admiration for her. She remained an idol to many, and seeing a miniature version of her made Yoimiya's heart melt.
Su Ran noticed the blonde girl behind him and smiled. "Of course, my little Ying is the cutest."
Lei Dianying: …
I was just joking, and now he's really treating me like a child?
"Xiaoying? That's a nice name. She looks like she's dressed as General Raiden!" Yoimiya said, admiring Lei Dianying's outfit. She admitted to herself that this little one did look remarkably similar to the real general. Their appearances were almost identical.
"No, it's not a costume," Su Ran said with a grin. "She's actually General Raiden herself."
Yoimiya blinked in surprise and then laughed. "That's a pretty silly joke."
Su Ran smiled but didn't push the matter further.
