Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Curious Onlookers
"Senior, don't you think what we're doing feels… kind of wrong?" At this moment, Alice was still a simple girl, far from the mischievous witch she would become in the future.
"I feel the same way… But what can I do? I didn't ask them to bring me gifts—they're the ones begging me to be their master, calling me a great sage. What am I supposed to do?"
"Aren't you afraid the headmaster will find out?"
"Don't worry. Worst case scenario, I'll just get whipped a few times. The headmaster won't interfere in students' personal affairs as long as we don't go around killing people, committing arson, or swindling others."
"But…"
"Let's hear some applause!"
(Thunderous applause filled the room.)
…
Yu followed Ei to Narukami Island, feeling like he had forgotten something. After thinking about it briefly, he decided not to dwell on it.
Meanwhile, Orobashi's decaying corpse lay abandoned in the wilderness, its stench spreading far and wide. No one wanted to deal with it.

Tatarasuna
"Yu! Come on, fight me!"
Ei was in a mood—one of those moods where pent-up emotions had nowhere to go. Hoping to sweat out her frustrations, she challenged Yu to a sparring match. Yu sighed, realizing he was about to become her punching bag again.
Ei's attacks were erratic yet ferociously swift. Yu, armed with two wooden stakes, blocked her blows with precision, quietly waiting for her to release her anger.
With one powerful strike, Ei shattered Yu's wooden stakes and slashed deeply across his chest.
"Ouch, ouch, ouch!" Yu collapsed onto the ground, rolling around in pain. It hurt—a lot. Despite all the injuries he had sustained in battles with gods, nothing had ever hurt this much. Not even the first time he fought Ei. The only comparable experiences were when the five Yaksha brothers yanked out the embedded Vortex Vanquisher from his body after a fight, or when the Greater Lord Rukkhadevata gave him a beating.
Those were the only two instances that came close. Well, there was also that time Ei struck him during the incident with Apep—painful, yes, but still bearable.
Seeing Yu writhing in pain snapped Ei out of her unusual state. She rushed over, concerned.
"Yu, are you alright?"
"I'm fine. Just hurts a bit—worse than when my mother used to hit me. But I can keep going. Wait, I need to test something first."
Yu picked up one of the broken wooden stakes and jabbed himself lightly. It didn't hurt much.
He handed the stake to Ei. "Stab me once."
Though puzzled, Ei did as he asked.
"Ow, ow, ow! Too painful!" Yu yelped.
Now he understood: getting hit by anyone else didn't hurt nearly as much as getting hit by Ei. And it had been like this ever since they met.
"How about we call it a day? I think I've had enough."
"Don't worry about me. It's just some physical pain. Some people suffer from heartache, after all."
"Thank you. I'm ready."
"You really don't hold back, do you?"

Seven Days Later, at Night
Seven days of constant sparring had taken their toll. Yu was exhausted—not physically, as his elemental energy and stamina remained high, but mentally. He felt drained, as if coming down from the high of a prolonged festival. Despite his energy reserves, he no longer had the will to fight. He lay on the ground, staring at the stars and moon, thinking it wasn't so bad to just relax like this.
Ei noticed Yu's lack of enthusiasm. In truth, she had wanted to stop much earlier but hadn't wanted to ruin his apparent excitement. Seeing him now, she decided to sit down as well, leaning against a nearby tree.
"What are you looking at?"
"The moon."
"What's so interesting about the moon?"
"Who knows? Maybe there's something worth seeing up there. If I ever get the chance, I'd like to visit it. Who knows? Maybe you can even farm up there."
Ei had no idea how to respond, so she simply stayed by his side in silence. It felt… nice.
Yu shifted closer, leaning against the tree beside her, silently pondering something.
Not far away, a white-haired fox and Raiden Makoto, along with several other curious yokai, lay hidden in a nearby bush. The poor bush could never have imagined it would one day shelter such a bizarre gathering of creatures.
"How far do you think they'll go?" one yokai whispered.
"Damn it, there's still no progress! Aren't you supposed to be the bold conqueror? Make a move already!" another whispered furiously.
"You know what? I'm going to find a better spot. Kitsune Saiguu, go crouch over there."
"Come on, let me watch a little longer. Have some pity on this poor little fox."
The commotion had drawn various bored and nosy creatures to spectate. Over several days and nights, they had taken turns observing the pair, switching shifts to ensure someone was always on watch.
"This spot has the best view. No way I'm leaving. Now hurry back—it's your shift to work," Raiden Makoto ordered firmly.
"Wait! I think… I think they're holding hands!" someone whispered excitedly.
"Let me see!"
"They are holding hands!"
"Get lost, you stinky fox!"
"Makoto! How could you be so heartless?" Saiguu pouted.
