Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Two Troublesome Prodigies
Upon returning to Sumeru, Yu handed out souvenirs from the academic tour—small metal trinkets shaped like bombs. It had become a tradition after every trip.
This time, Yu brought back more than just trinkets. Alongside a little elf came an unexpected surprise: a little devil in disguise.
Alice, despite her quick learning and popularity among her peers—thanks to her undeniable charm—seemed to have an unusual obsession with bombs. Her enthusiasm for explosives went beyond mere curiosity. One day, she secretly conducted an experiment at the pool where Yu's cherished pet reside, accidentally frightening Little Blue's family. They chased her relentlessly, nearly swallowing her whole.
With Alice dangling by the scruff of her neck, Yu leisurely made his way towards the confinement room.
"Headmaster… Alice knows she was wrong."
"Oh? And what exactly was your mistake?"
"I shouldn't have conducted random bomb experiments outdoors."
"So you knew it was wrong and still did it? Stay here and reflect."
---
After three days, Alice was finally released. Remarkably, despite missing classes, she quickly caught up on her studies, earning the admiration of her fellow students.
The Akademiya was still in its early stages of development, lacking the six great schools it would later become known for. At this point, it was merely a budding institution with only a few disciplines taking shape.
Feeling bored, Alice wandered into the library, casually flipping through books. But even that failed to hold her interest for long.
"When's the next academic tour, Headmaster? I'm so bored! I've finished all my coursework and submitted my thesis—there's nothing left to do!"
Suddenly, an idea struck her. "I know! I'll go somewhere remote and test my bombs. No one will notice."
Alice soon found herself at the boundary between the yellow desert and the lush green forests. Scanning her surroundings and finding no one in sight, she grinned.
"Perfect! Time for Alice's latest experiment. Here we go!"
But just as the explosion went off, a sharp cry echoed from the blast site.
"Ah!"
Alice was startled. "How could this happen? Was someone there? Did I… did I actually hurt someone? Oh no, I'm done for! Headmaster's going to punish me again!"
She rushed towards the source of the sound and found a young girl lying on the sandy ground. The girl had pale yellow hair and eyes unlike any Alice had ever seen—her pupils shimmered like gemstones, strikingly unique.
"I'm so sorry! Are you okay?"
The girl rose to her feet, her unusual eyes gleaming with irritation. "No, I'm not okay! That explosion of yours just ruined my work! Do you have any idea how much effort I put into it?" She glared at the shattered remnants of her alchemy vials, on the verge of tears.
"I'm really sorry… I'll make it up to you."
"Make it up? How? Do you have any idea how much time and effort I spent on this?"
"Well… I could give you some bombs. I still have a few left. The rest were confiscated by the Headmaster."
"Bombs? Hmm, let me see…"
---
Though the encounter started off rocky, the two girls quickly warmed up to each other. They introduced themselves—Alice and the girl, who called herself Rhinedottir, from Khaenri'ah. Rhinedottir had come to Sumeru out of curiosity about the outside world. As they chatted, she became increasingly intrigued by the Akademiya, especially when Alice described Yu, the enigmatic headmaster. Without much hesitation (or resistance), Alice successfully convinced Rhinedottir to return with her.
When Greater Lord Rukkhadevata met Rhinedottir, she took an immediate liking to the inquisitive girl, appreciating her insatiable thirst for knowledge.
Thus, Yu's roster of foreign students grew by one.
---
(Currently known students close to Yu: First disciple Alice, second disciple Rhinedottir, and the younger disciples—Dottore and others. All of them… incredibly talented, each in their own unique way.)
"Headmaster, is it true that you're an all-knowing and omnipotent god?"
"I don't think so. At the very least, I can't punch the sun out of existence."
Rhinedottir: ...…
"If it's alchemy you're interested in, consult Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. He's far more knowledgeable in that area. My alchemy tends to be… unconventional." Indeed, Yu's alchemical creations often produced strange white smoke, reminiscent of failed attempts at immortality elixirs. The results were typically subpar, so Rhinedottir's primary teacher became Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. However, even the Akademiya's most knowledgeable instructors found themselves stumped by Rhinedottir's relentless questions—her curiosity was boundless, and she was, without a doubt, another prodigy.
Rhinedottir possessed a unique talent for alchemy. Many of her questions left even the most esteemed scholars scratching their heads. When they couldn't provide answers, Rhinedottir would often turn to Yu, knowing that he harbored knowledge beyond this world.
"Headmaster, do you think it's possible to create life?"
"Tell me this: what is the fundamental difference between life and non-life?" Yu decided to challenge her, hoping to broaden her perspective on the vastness of knowledge.
"…" For once, Rhinedottir was at a loss for words. She couldn't give a clear answer.
"Let me tell you something romantic."
"Look at the stars. Aren't they beautiful?"
"They are. But… what does that have to do with anything?"
"What if I told you there's no difference between you and those stars?"
Rhinedottir was stunned. How could she, a living being, be the same as a star in the sky?
"All things are made up of smaller parts, just as houses are built from bricks. Bricks are made of earth, and the earth itself is made of countless particles. Humans are no different—we, too, are composed of tiny particles. These particles were forged in the cosmic fires of stars long ago. In a way, you and the stars are made of the same stuff. You might even say you're old acquaintances."
"So, Headmaster, does that mean there's no inherent difference between life and non-life?"
"With our current understanding, yes. After all, everything that makes up life can also be found in non-living things."
"What are those things?"
"I won't tell you. Find out for yourself."
Rhinedottir groaned in frustration.
---
"Headmaster, can I borrow Little Blue? I need some parts of her body for alchemical research."
"Ask her yourself."
"She said yes! Y(^_^)Y"
"…How did you convince her?"
"While experimenting the other day, I accidentally made a delicious liquid that Little Blue loved."
---
"RHINEDOTTIR!!! Get over here! Why is Little Blue turning into powder?!"
"Headmaster… it was just a minor mishap. I was trying to turn her into a human, but since I didn't have any proper samples, and Little Blue was so sturdy, I thought…"
"You're going to the confinement room. Alice, you're going with her!"
