Football: The British Legendary Manager

Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Are You Really Not Gay?

When he disbanded the players, although he wanted to have a good chat with Totti and De Rossi, Henry didn't do it because he didn't feel that it was the right time.

It's still the same thing, empty words. It's better to wait until they are familiar with each other and the team achieves some results before talking to them.

Deep down in his heart, Henry has a big ambition this season. As Roma isn't qualified for any European competition and will only participate in Serie A and the Copa Italia for the 2012-13 season.

Even in the Copa Italia, they will start directly in the round of 16, so it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Roma has only the league to focus on.

Under such favorable circumstances, without having to worry about a bad schedule, lack of bench depth, or anything else, Henry's ambition is to make a big splash and win Serie A. Even if that doesn't happen, he wants to at least secure a Champions League spot for next season.

Of course, ambitions are just ambitions, but he definitely wouldn't tell anyone about them now. He has to wait to produce some results, for the players to regain confidence and see hope, and to gain the support of the fans.

When he and Paul returned to his office after disbanding the team, he asked his friend, "So, what do you think?"

Paul wasn't ambiguous in his response. "It's not bad. Overall, the situation can be said to be better than expected. As for you, to be honest, I could see from 1,000 kilometers away that you were nervous."

Henry rolled his eyes. Of course, he was a little nervous. Although he had faced Manchester United in the FA Cup and had seen many stars, now he was coaching them.

He was coaching players like Totti and De Rossi and managing a big team like AS Roma for the first time. It was normal to feel some nervousness.

Henry was now more relaxed than ever after having his first contact with the players. He chuckled, "Come on, isn't it normal to be a little nervous the first time? It's not like this will happen every day."

Paul nodded. "I know it's normal to be nervous, but you're not a rookie. You should know how a coach's state, whether confident or nervous, can affect the whole team."

Henry didn't know how to explain it to Paul. He wasn't nervous about leading the team; if anything, he was confident that he would achieve satisfying results.

The reason he appeared a little nervous was simply because he was leading a team of big stars for the first time and didn't want anything bad to happen.

But still, as Paul showed, a coach should never display insecurity, nervousness, or any negative emotion in front of the players, as it could indeed affect them.

Henry could only raise his hand helplessly, accepting defeat, before changing the subject. "Alright, now that the physical examinations have come out, it's time to start formulating the plan."

Paul nodded. Although they had a rough plan of how to proceed, it was better to know the condition of the players before finalizing it.

Henry opened a suitcase full of documents. "This is my plan for each of the players. You need to calibrate it according to their current conditions."

Paul took the documents. It was indeed a detailed training plan, more individually inclined. Henry already had the data on the team's players and knew their weaknesses and strengths, so it was normal for him to have a plan about what to focus on in training.

Now all he needed to do was adjust the training intensity according to the players' conditions. Paul had always been the one leading the team's training because Henry trusted him very much.

Henry only needed to give him the general direction and requirements, and Paul would definitely execute it. Although their coaching staff was small, with only the two of them, they trusted each other's abilities completely.

After finishing reading the plan, Paul couldn't help but sigh. "Man, you're becoming more and more meticulous, calculating every detail."

"Don't worry, by tomorrow morning, I'll readjust it. Anyway, the new tactics require the players to run a lot, so you have to be ready to hear their complaints about the training being too hard."

In small clubs, unless a player has a special status, who would dare to complain that the coach's training is too hard?

Unfortunately, in big clubs, a coach has to be ready for this. Last year, Tevez refused to come on as a substitute during a Champions League match between Manchester City and Bayern Munich because of a conflict with Mancini.

Drogba openly questioned Villas-Boas' tactics after a Champions League loss to Napoli, while Lampard expressed frustration about being dropped, saying he had "no problem" with the coach but disagreed with his decisions. The result? Villas-Boas was sacked in March.

These two conflicts had different outcomes. Mancini directly froze Tevez out, saying the latter's time at City was over, while Villas-Boas couldn't do anything and was sacked.

Was it because Villas-Boas' abilities were inferior to Mancini's, or because he was too soft in handling the players' rebellion? Not really.

Mancini had a greater reputation than most of the players at the club, and his status was higher than Tevez's, who had come from United.

At Chelsea, Lampard and Drogba's status and reputation were not on the same level as Villas-Boas, who hadn't really proven himself.

Now the question is, if Totti and De Rossi—who are a little older and would definitely have some physical fitness issues, complain about how hard the training is, and the team doesn't achieve results in two or three games, there's no need to think about what would happen. Henry wouldn't even last until March like Villas-Boas.

Sometimes, Henry even wondered if he had made the right choice.

Wouldn't it have been better to stay at Sunderland for one more year, where he wouldn't have faced such pressure, achieved some results, and then chosen a club of his choice, instead of coming to Italy, where he is relatively unknown and would have a hard time adjusting to the place and the players?

These thoughts didn't last long in his head before he dismissed them. It's only through pressure that one can achieve their best and surpass their limits.

Here, he has all the ingredients to achieve something greater. He shouldn't have negative thoughts just because the beginning is a little tough.

After calming down, Henry smiled wryly at Paul. "Be gentle for the first time."

Paul chuckled at his friend's helpless situation. It was Henry who had come up with the training plan, so in fact, he wasn't as helpless as he appeared. He just couldn't do exactly as he wanted.

Seeing Paul chuckling at his misery, Henry waved his hand impatiently. "Alright, go home and spend time with your family. This will be your last free day in the next few months. From tomorrow, the season has already started for us."

Paul smiled at Henry's concern before reminding him of something and storming out before he could reply. "It's surprising that a single man like you has such concern. Man, I'm curious—are you really not gay?"

Henry was furious at Paul's question and wanted to strangle his friend. Unfortunately, the latter had already run for his life.

After calming down, Henry, who was alone in his office, murmured, "Family? Women?"

He then sighed. What will come will eventually come. There's no need to force it. He feels that the woman meant for him by God is somewhere in the world, waiting for him. It's just not the right time for them yet.

After another hour of work, Henry finally decided to call it a night. He packed up his things and turned off the lights in the office, leaving the building in silence.

The first preseason game is set in two weeks. He can't wait to start, just to see the effect of the tactics, though he doubts if the opponent will even be able to score against them.
