Chapter 57: Galter-kun and the Pale Dude
"That was exhausting!"
"Water, Saber?"
"Thanks, Archer."
"Who would have guessed training wouldn't be so bad?"
"I did most of the work... you fired 20 weapons at most."
"I assisted you, Saber."
"You know, Archer, the point of training is to put your maximum effort into something so that you can improve..."
"Well, I'm training my knowledge on training, so thank you for the clarification, Saber."
"... sure."
"What do you say we go and eat something and wash away the sweat?"
"You're not sweating..."
"Well, you wouldn't mind a bath, would you?"
"I guess I wouldn't."
"Perfect, so we can go right now!"
"... when you say that, Archer, do you mean-"
"Together, obviously."
"No."
"Not right now-"
"No, just no in general."
"Damn it, I almost had you."
"Admittedly, you did."
"You mean-"
"No, I don't mean it that way, but nice try."
"Damn you, Ishtar!"
"Why are you suddenly insulting her?"
"Just felt like it, she deserves it."
"I'm sure she does-"
"Brace yourself."
"For what-"
Just then, a tremor rippled throughout the ship, and the sensation of falling increased exponentially as the seconds passed, until, inevitably, the crash happened.
"What the hell is going on?"
"We were shot down."
"Any chance we can befriend those who did that?"
"I doubt, right now, we're in a small pocket of Reality."
"That means that-"
"No, there doesn't seem to be any Grand Servant. But there is an unnatural surge of mana."
"Then let's get this over as soon as possible."
"Very well."
Saber and Gilgamesh reconnected with the others, who had been woken up quite roughly by the attack.
"Why can't we have a smooth travel without accidents..."
"You're uncharacteristically whiny, you dog."
"Jalter, you don't have to fight if you don't want to."
"Yeah, stay here, nice and cozy, while we risk our lives for you."
"You... I'll show you after we've dealt with these pests."
"Ok, let's go, ever-"
"You get out after me, mongrel."
"Sure, Big Bro."
Gilgamesh stepped out of his damaged ship.
"PRASWAPA - Cherished Bow, Make the Immortal Guru Sleep Eternally"
The point of the arrow stopped just barely before touching Gilgamesh's head, after having pierced through several shields and defense mechanisms.
"What the hell was that?"
"To try and snipe your king, you really must be feeling full of yourself, mongrels."
"I apologise, your Majesty, but you see a bit too foreign to be a king I served during my lifetime."
The old man said, adding a chuckle, as he gently bowed down.
"Lord Bhishma, you truly are an example of honour to us all... but bowing to the enemy is a bit much don't you think?"
A woman said, dressed scantily and with hair that looked weaved out of cherry blossoms and piercing blue eyes, while she stood with a seemingly carefree attitude.
Along with the two of them, there was also a man in traditional clothing with long blue hair and a pale male with white hair and golden armour.
"Kojirou... is that you?"
"You know this girl? Wait... don't tell me you've cheated your rival with someone else... you think I'm not enough to cut you down, Sasaki?"
"Saber, it seems that fate can be really cruel sometimes... regardless, I'm glad to see you, I hope we can resume our battle-"
"Absolutely not, I shall be the one to cut her down. You already had your chance, Sasaki!"
"Such a greedy woman..."
"Hey, you, Pale Dude... you look kind of familiar, don't you?"
"... perhaps. But it's best if we don't attach too much to you, we have to defeat you, after all."
"What should we do?"
"Over there, there's a giant egg... it's the source of this flow of energy, and the cause of this Reality Pocket. Someone will have to destroy it."
"Jalter, want to do the honours?"
I suppose I don't mind an omelette every once in a while."
"We'll stop the others from interfering."
"One of you women should battle Bhishma. He cannot harm you directly."
"I'll go then." Salter offered.
"Big Bro, the pale guy seems strong, but I think I can handle him."
"Do as you please, I'll quickly handle the mongrel who's going to ambush us."
"Who-"
Before the others could question this remark, Gilgamesh launched three long spears behind himself, stopping dead on her tracks another Servant. She wore traditional Japanese clothing and had pink hair and eyes with a slight yellow glow.
"Hey, Arty, that one really looks like us."
"You two, why do you look so much like me?"
"Do you both seriously expect and answer out of me?"
"This confrontation is already losing seriousness- Commander Bhishma, what's the matter?"
"It's terrible, Karna... first that golden youngster blocks my Praswapa, and then I have to fight a woman..."
"This isn't the time not to be serious! Don't worry, we won't allow them to decide who they will fi-"
Before Karna could finish, a portal opened up in front of him, with a shotgun pressing against his chest. After the bullet was fired, the Indian hero was sent flying backwards, with Galter exiting the portal and blasting Bhishma with his suit.
"Ok, guys, stick to the plan, I'm heading off."
Before his enemies could react, Galter disappeared with another of his portals. When he came out, he was piloting a high-speed jet straight against Karna.
"Well, that's not something you see every day..."
Bhishma commented while dodging a red energy slash.
"Well, this calls for rough measures.
PARASHURAMA"
Around his bow, several arrows glistened as he picked one, ready to fire it.
"Bhramastra"
Avoiding, the fiery impact, Saber and Nero jumped high, before being intercepted by the two other swordsmen.
"We'll link up later, Nero."
"Got it, Arty."
"It seems that leaves us both, mongrel."
"I hate you already, so I won't have qualms in killing you."
"You're free to try and fail, mongrel."
Not too far away...
"It seems like you were successful in separating me from the others."
"Yeah, seems that way. I'm sorry, but you're too strong and I don't want to risk the safety of my companions. Not to mention that you just survived getting bombed by my strongest Noble Phantasms with barely a scratch, so I assume that your armour is really strong."
"It seems like you are a really strong warrior. I'm Karna."
"Oh my, a great hero is in front of me. I'm sorry, but I probably come from a different timeline than yours, so I don't know an awful lot about you. I'm Gilgamesh, by the way."
"The King of Heroes, huh?"
"That's just a name I was given."
"Names that are given usually tend to hold truth in them."
"We shall see. Before we start, I just want to ask a question: you seem like a good person, and I don't wish to fight good people over nothing. So what are your reasons?"
"I was ordered by the Will of Humanity to guard this egg."
"And what do you get in return?"
"The safety of my brothers."
"Your brothers?"
"The Pandava."
"Well, that's a surprise. Weren't you and Arjuna mortal enemies in life?"
"Yes, we were... in life, we had no reason to ally with each other, nor the inclination... and yet... when I came here... we resumed fighting... but... I grew tired of it. And I could see that Arjuna was growing tired of it too. So, I offered what was impossible in our lifetime... peace. But then... Alaya came, and took Arjuna away... and said that to have him back I'll have to complete this task."
"What about the others?"
"..."
"... I see. I don't really get why you want to rescue him, though."
"Throughout my life, I met many people who were friendly and kind to me. And I helped many. But... I always felt like no one understood me. And even though we battled most of the time... I feel... I hope... that Arjuna might be the one to understand him. So I don't want to lose him."
Galter sighed as he extracted from a portal his most cherished sword, Merodach.
"This is why enemies shouldn't talk before fighting. So that they don't end up killing kindred souls."
Karna took a step back and readied his spear as it was enveloped by flames.
"Bhramastra Kundala!"
"Merodach!"
The clash of Noble Phantasms left a huge impact and crater. Galter, moved quickly on the offensive as he was blocked by Karna who retrieved his spear and unleashed a wall of flames. Using his suit, Galter moved out of the way, just barely.
"Your Mana Burst is nearly as strong as Salter's. And in terms of area is probably the most impressive I've ever seen."
"You shouldn't flatter your enemy too much."
"It's not flattering, I'm just analysing the situation. Well, it seems that I can at least momentarily keep up with you, and that the range of my weapon doesn't really matter if you're just going to spam flames of this intensity all the time. In that case, matching you move by move shall do."
Galter grabbed a spear and threw it toward the Hero of Charity. In the time Karna took to block this strike, Galter was already in front of him, wielding an axe which he swang at Karna's head.
"Aiming for my head because it's not protected?"
"Yeah, something like that."
With his other arm, Galter attempted to pierce Karna's armour with Merodach, having no effect. Just then, from the tip of the sword he unleashed a blast of green energy.
Karna was knocked back, but relatively undamaged.
"Sorry to disappoint, but my earrings also provide protection to my face."
"Man, what a hassle."
"More importantly, it seems like you just pulled out another move from your arsenal. Did you copy my skill?"
"Copy? Not exactly. Being the archetype of the hero in every timeline, every legend stems from mine, therefore, every feat a hero is famous for is something I originally accomplished. What I'm getting at is that I possess every skill, apart from the truly personal ones. For example, if I were to face King Midas, I couldn't turn gold into something else."
"That's absurd, then why didn't you-"
"I'll stop you right there, the problem is that this, apart from draining a ton of mana, also kind of breaks my brain: if I think too much about everything I can do, then I end up doing nothing at all. In battle, it's best to keep things simple. Too many factors equal to too many things to worry about. That's pretty advantageous to me, because I know exactly how I'm going to fight, while my enemy has no idea what I'm going to do."
"I see, but do you think that revealing your trump card was a smart move?"
"Haha, my good man, if this was my trump card I would have never revealed it to you."
Just as he finished talking, Galter summoned a bow and fired three arrows at Karna. Just before those weapons made contact with Karna's spear, they exploded, making him retreat.
"Using my lower-grade weapons as Broken Phantasms is another nifty trick I have. After all, what good is an infinite treasure if you can't waste it a bit."
"You do appear to be quite chatty during a battle."
"I only am when it's needed."
"And why did you need it now?"
"Because I've come up with my next strategy to beat you."
"Very well, I am ready to face it, King of Heroes."
"You won't have time, it's already in motion."
Galter said as he snapped his fingers. Underneath Karna's feet, there was a huge explosion that could be heard far away. Once everything more or less settled down, a smoke cloud surrounded the area. Karna saw a figure standing in front of him as he breathed heavily, having survived the surprise attack with a few scratches, and fired his Bhramastra from his eye, ripping the figure to shreds. Before he could even confirm the kill, the air all around him, still full of smoke, caught fire, creating a second and even larger fireball.
"Highly flammable gas, one of the many wonders of modern technology, together with all the bombs I placed in that spot. Thank you for chatting with me, it gave me time to place them there."
Karna looked in front of him and realised that what he had hit was just a dummy, so he quickly realised what was going on.
"A decoy?! Then he's going to hit me from behind, and- is that a minigun?!"
It was, in fact, a minigun, which roared furiously as several high ranking Noble Phantasms turned into bullets hit Karna in a few seconds.
"Geez, all this, and barely a few drops of blood... you really are tough."
Karna was quickly back on his feet and was ready to use Bhramastra Kundala again, but something knocked him of balance. A grenade released by the Gate of Babilon right behind him. Inevitably, he fell forward, and Galter rushed forward, pointing Merodach right to his enemy's face.
"Merodach!"
It was a clean hit, that even managed to slightly damage Kavacha and Kundala.
"*coughs up blood* I expected the King of Heroes to fight a bit more honourably."
"Honourably?"
Galter questioned with a serious look as his entire demeanor seemed to change.
"This is war. If you lose you die. And a king doesn't have the luxury to decide when he's going to die. A king must lead his army to victory. A king must not die until victory is achieved. I am giving you my all, both in my strength and my intelligence, I'm giving my all and using every tactic to defeat you, to not die, because I can't lose yet. If this isn't honourable, then what is? If anything, I'm the one being honourable here, don't you think so, Karna, Wrath of the Sun?"
"... you're right, I apologise. Keep giving it your all, King of Heroes."
"That is my intention."
Opening a dozen portals, Galter activated a laser system that targeted Karna's weakpoints, as he shot an arrowfied Merodach. Karna retaliated with a Bhramastra Kundala and fired another Bhramastra from his eye. A barrier appeared in front of Galter, stopping this attempt.
"You can use magic too?"
"Hehe, magic?! This is technology. Humans don't need magic anymore. They can fight against the gods with what they understand and create."
Moving his hand down, Galter ordered a missile to rain down on Karna, creating a huge explosion.
"I'm rarely this surprised... to tank a ICBM like this... you leave me no choice but to force my hand a bit."
"I agree that we must settle this quickly."
"Yeah, luckily, I bought enough time for it to take effect."
Karna crouched down in pain as he started coughing up blood.
"What... is this... is it... poison?"
"Not just any poison, one of the strongest ones ever created. It was in the gas mix you breathed earlier before setting it on fire. Even a strong Heroic Spirit like you can't be unaffected. The only reason I am is that I was wearing a mask, which I promptly remove before you could notice."
"You really are a tough opponent."
"So are you. I didn't want to use this, since I'm in no mood to deal with her shenanigans, but you're leaving me no choice. Please come out. I need you, Ea."
