Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Black Bible
**Black Bible**
[The Devotion of an Atheist]
A dim candle flickered in the heart of the room, casting restless shadows against the worn stone walls. Two figures sat in silence, their forms swallowed by the wavering darkness—an old man with a cascade of white hair and a beard that pooled against his chest, and a child, no older than nine, clad in black from head to toe save for a scarf that stood out in muted contrast.
Their conversation, momentarily interrupted, resumed.
Cassian—a girl of the same age—had long since surrendered to sleep, her breaths soft and steady in the next room.
The old man exhaled, his expression sharpening like the edge of a well-honed blade. The candlelight carved lines of wisdom and weariness into his aged face.
"Well, since your 'boy' is already sleeping like a log, let's continue our discussion," I said, settling into my seat.
The old man did not smile. His gaze, heavy with unseen burdens, flickered toward me.
"The Black Bible," he began, voice low and deliberate. "Before I speak of it, you must first understand the Order."
I leaned forward slightly, the shadows shifting as the candle's feeble glow wavered.
"The Order was founded long ago," he continued, his voice dipping into the cadence of old histories, "in the City of Babylon."
I frowned. "Babylon... isn't that where they built the Tower of Babel?"
A slow nod. "Correct. There, mankind spoke with one voice and sought to raise a tower that would pierce the heavens—to unite the world beneath a single tongue and purpose." He paused, the flickering light reflecting in his eyes like distant embers. "But the gods saw this as an act of defiance. A rebellion."
I crossed my arms, my fingers curling against the fabric of my sleeves. "And how does that connect to the Order's creation?"
"The Order holds two beliefs," he said, voice hushed yet weighted with meaning. "The first: humanity must be destroyed. The second: the world must be unified." He let the words settle before adding, "They believe that, should they succeed, they will ascend into godhood."
Something about those words stirred unease within me. *This sounds eerily familiar… like something straight out of a Fairy Tail plot.* I pushed the thought aside, shifting my focus back to the old man.
"But how can they be so sure it'll work?" I asked, skepticism lacing my tone. "It's not like they were alive centuries ago—before history, before dragons even ruled the skies."
His lips pressed into a thin line, a breath slipping past them before he spoke again.
"Exactly," he admitted. "And yet… they claim certainty because it is written in the book. The very beginning—the time when God first breathed life into man."
He closed his eyes, as though summoning the words from the depths of memory, and then he recited them, each syllable dripping with the weight of something ancient, something forbidden.
--->>
>>["In the beginning, I spoke, and the world came to be. Darkness filled the void, and I said, "Let there be light," and light appeared, separating day from night. On the second day, I created the sky to separate the waters.]
>>[On the third day, I gathered the waters into seas and called forth dry land, bringing plants and trees to life. On the fourth day, I placed the sun, moon, and stars to mark time.]
>>[On the fifth day, I filled the waters with creatures and the sky with birds, blessing them to multiply. On the sixth day, I created animals and humans in My image, giving them dominion over the earth.]
>>[I saw all that I had made, and it was very good. On the seventh day, I rested, sanctifying the day as holy. And thus, all was complete."]
>>["And it came to pass that in the garden which I had made, Aedan and Eveline lived in perfect harmony. But there was a whisper in the wind, a secret ancient and hidden. And the serpent, more cunning than any beast of the field which I had created, spake unto the woman, saying, "Yea, hath God said, 'Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?"]
>>[And the woman said unto the serpent, "Of the fruit of the trees we may eat, but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, 'Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.'"]
>>[And the serpent said unto the woman, "Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."]
>>[And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.]
>>[And in that moment, their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were not as they had been. They saw that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.]
>>[And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Aedan and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Aedan, and said unto him, "Where art thou?"]
>>[And Aedan said, "I heard Thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself."]
>>[And He said, "Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?"]
>>[And Aedan said, "The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat."]
>>[And the Lord God said unto the woman, "What is this that thou hast done?" And the woman said, "The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat."]
>>[And the Lord God said unto the serpent, "Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."]
>>[Unto the woman He said, "I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee."]
>>[And unto Aedan He said, "Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, 'Thou shalt not eat of it': cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."]
>>[And Aedan called his wife's name Eveline; because she was the mother of all living.]
>>[And unto Aedan also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them. And the Lord God said, "Behold, the man is become as one of Us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever: therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life."]
>>[And thus it was that man, having gained the knowledge of gods, was cast out from the garden of Eden and from the presence of heaven, to walk upon the earth in the fullness of the burden he had claimed."]
--->>
As I listened attentively, a thought began to take shape in my mind, unraveling like a thread pulled from an ancient tapestry.
*"So, to achieve godhood, one must eat the fruit of forbidden knowledge. But to do that, they first need to reach Eden—the Heaven's Garden. And to get there, they would require something akin to the Tower of Babel, a structure long since lost to time, reduced to nothing but ruins. Even if it still stood, slaughtering humanity makes no logical sense… So why?"*
I voiced my thoughts aloud, the pieces clicking together in my mind like a puzzle finally revealing its image. Then, as the realization struck, my breath caught.
*"Don't tell me—"*
The old man regarded me with a mixture of admiration and quiet concern, the candlelight casting shifting shadows across his weathered face.
"You are truly quick-witted," he murmured. "Yes. They believe that by massacring every last human, the gods will descend from heaven." His voice carried the weight of old truths, of secrets buried beneath centuries of blood and faith. "This is what the founder told me."
He paused for a moment, as if letting the gravity of his words settle before continuing his tale.
-->>
>>["And it came to pass in the days of the great gods, when they walked upon the earth, that there arose a man named **Jarek**, who sought the power of the gods. For his heart was full of greed, and he desired to be as the gods, to know their power and to rule as they did.]
>>[And lo, in the days of turmoil, a god named **Thalor** was slain by those who were once his kin. His body was cast upon the earth, and his blood poured forth like rivers, spilling into the soil. His flesh lay upon the ground, untouched by the hand of any mortal, for it was said that to partake of it would bring forth great power.]
>>[And **Jarek** came upon the body of Thalor, and he beheld the blood, and it was as a fire in his eyes. And the voice of the serpent, who whispers in the hearts of the greedy, spake unto him, saying, "Take of the blood of the god, and ye shall become as gods, knowing all things, and your power shall be without limit."]
>>[And Jarek, moved by the serpent's words, took the blood of Thalor and drank deeply of it. And in that moment, his strength was as the might of the earth, his mind as vast as the heavens. He knew the secrets of the stars, and the winds bowed before him.]
>>[And he ate the flesh of Thalor, and his body was transformed, glowing with the radiance of the divine. His eyes were opened, and he saw the world as gods see it, and his heart swelled with pride, for he thought himself now as powerful as Thalor.]
>>[But the blood of the god was not without consequence. For as Jarek drank, the power within him grew, yet his soul became a vessel of hunger, and his heart grew heavy with greed. He craved more, and his mind was consumed by the thought of more power, more knowledge.]
>>[And lo, the serpent spake again, "Take more, drink deeply, and you shall surpass even Thalor, for the blood of gods is the path to ultimate power. Consume all, and you shall be as one with the divine."]

"I see… so it's another way to obtain God-Slaying Magic."
Traditionally, to wield God-Slaying Magic, one had to be taught by a god. That was the only known method. However, the **Black Bible** spoke of something entirely different—**eating the flesh of a god.**
"This is truly intriguing," I murmured, deep in thought. "The gods have long since vanished, dwelling in the heavenly realm. If the Order wishes to find one, they have only two options—ascend to heaven or force the gods to descend."
I paused, resting a finger against my chin. The pieces were fitting together, but the final picture was something far more sinister than I had anticipated.
*"So by annihilating all of humanity—by reducing the gods' creation to ruin—they're forcing the divine to intervene. And when the gods descend… they will slaughter them. Eat them. But if this method is merely an alternative, then that means—"*
I stopped mid-sentence, my breath catching. My gaze met his, searching for confirmation. The old man said nothing. His silence was all the answer I needed.
A chill crept up my spine. "At first… they must have tried consuming those believed to be god's descendants. They must have hunted them down, devouring them piece by piece. And when that failed… they sought other alternatives."
The image in my mind was horrifying. Cities being **invaded**. Entire bloodlines **erased**. A ceaseless slaughter in pursuit of godhood.
I let out a sigh, a weary and helpless sound. A heavy silence lingered between us.
Then, I hesitated before speaking again. "...Old man, about Cassian. Was he—?"
Before I could finish, his answer cut through the quiet.
"No… she is not what you think she is," he said solemnly. "During the Order's attack, everyone was slaughtered. **Eaten.** Not just the natives—even travelers, innocents passing through. By the time I arrived, there was only one survivor." He exhaled. "Her parents were among the dead."
"I see…" I muttered. "So you erased his memories, then?"
It was the only logical conclusion. No wonder **he—no, she—** never questioned her past.
The old man gave a firm nod.
But before I could dwell on it, he shifted the conversation. "Now, I will tell you everything I know about the members of the Order."
He raised a hand, spreading his fingers.
"The **Order of Blind Faith** is divided into five factions, each bound together as one. They are called **The Five Wails.**
- **The Wail of the Faithful**
- **The Wail of the Condemned**
- **The Wail of Silence**
- **The Wail of the Lost**
- **The Wail of Revelation**"
He lowered his hand. "I don't know who leads them now, but I once commanded **The Wail of the Lost**." A faint shadow crossed his expression. "Before I betrayed them… before I killed my own subordinates and severed my ties."
His voice held no regret—only finality.
"The current leader is another elder, one even older than me. We called him **Lord Dahmer.**"
The name left an unpleasant taste in my mouth.
"His magic is a mystery," the old man continued, "but I do know of his **right-hand man.** A butler named **Sebastian.** His magic wields both **Hellfire and Shadows.**"
I let the information sink in before asking, "Then… what about that woman I killed before?"
"You mean the leader of that one who could use spatial and bomb magic?" He furrowed his brows. "I don't know the full extent of his abilities, but I know his name. Or rather, the name he once bore."
A pause.
"**Azazel. The Wail of the Condemned.**"
I narrowed my eyes. **Azazel, huh…? I wonder if we'll cross paths again.**
I tucked that thought away for now. "And the bombings? Who was responsible?"
He sighed. "That was the work of **The Wail of Silence.** I don't know his name, but his magic is **Black Ice.** As for his subordinates… you've already seen them."
I stiffened. "You mean—?"
"Yes," he confirmed. "The two from the church. They are responsible for **turning children into living bombs,** an attempt to develop a method of 'immortalization' through endless suicide bombers."
My stomach twisted. **An army of self-destructing, undying children…?**
It reminded me of something. Something from the Fourth Great Ninja War… *Deidara's Edo Tensei—turning Shin into a living bomb.*
"As for their hideout," I pressed, "it's in the church, isn't it? So when do we attack?"
I expected him to answer immediately, but instead, he shook his head.
"With your power and mine, we could wipe them out with ease," he admitted. "However…"
He didn't need to finish the sentence.
I understood.
**Killing them wasn't the problem.** The real issue was their **modified bodies.** If they had altered their own biology—if they had implemented failsafe measures—then simply killing them could trigger **another explosion.**
And I had already witnessed the devastation of one.
**Everyone in this city is essentially a hostage. And we don't know how many bombs are in place.**
I sighed. "…This is troublesome."
We continued our discussion for several more hours, the conversation orbiting around the **Black Bible** and its implications.
Eventually, the old man retired to his room, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
I leaned back in my chair, crossing my arms over my chest. The chair's legs lifted slightly off the ground as I rocked back and forth, staring up at the dark ceiling.
So many pieces… so many questions…
And yet, only one thing was clear.
**The Order wasn't just hunting gods.**
They were preparing for something far, far worse.
