Chapter 452: Chapter 452: The Unknown Demon
"Father Diego! You finally arrived."
As the only man in the family, Duncan, who was in his twenties, greeted him with a face filled with anxious anticipation after a long wait.
"Can you perform the exorcism now?"
His mother was a devout believer, so he knew that the exorcism ceremony couldn't be conducted casually and required approval.
Watching Father Diego step out of the car, Duncan was genuinely terrified of hearing a negative answer.
At these words, even the people behind Duncan instinctively looked at Father Diego.
"Don't worry, Mr. Duncan," Father Diego reassured, holding his exorcism kit. "My exorcism application has been approved. We can now perform the exorcism on Mrs. Meheriban."
"That's great!" Duncan and his family were overjoyed.
Their sole elder, the head of the household, had suddenly turned into this ghastly state, and it was unbearable for them.
No one wants to see their family suffer, especially when there is no way to help. That feeling is pure torment every single day.
Every night, the upstairs cursing and shouting, the threats to kill them one by one, sent chills down their spines, preventing them from sleeping.
"Before the exorcism, I need to ask for your consent," Father Diego said. "Are you certain you want to go through with the exorcism?"
Exorcisms have strict regulations. Not only do they require the bishop's approval and an exorcism permit, but they also need the family's consent.
If the victim dies afterward, the exorcist bears all the consequences, including psychological torment, which is often the hardest part for the clergy to endure.
No one wants to perform an exorcism, nor do they want to see the victim die in front of them.
"I am willing," Duncan said seriously after exchanging glances with his family, exhaling deeply. "Father Diego, I've thought it through and am prepared to bear all the consequences."
"Very well."
Father Diego handed his exorcism kit to Brother Vorawi, who had followed him, and opened the kit with his help.
Ignoring everything else, Father Diego first took out the blessed crosses one by one and solemnly handed one to Duncan.
"Take these. The Lord will protect you and prevent the demon from possessing you."
When Bishop York was still a priest, he constantly shared his exorcism experiences with the church. Due to his reputation, most priests habitually sought to review Bishop York's exorcism cases.
Father Diego was among those who learned from Bishop York's experiences and found these little tricks very useful.
If the possessing demon kept switching hosts or if the family members were confused by the demon, these crosses could serve as a warning, letting him know the demon's next move.
"Thank you, Father Diego!"
Duncan hurriedly accepted them and distributed them among his family.
Father Diego nodded, then picked up a bottle of holy water from the kit and looked at the house behind Duncan, the site of today's exorcism.
With his own senses, Father Diego could feel a powerful oppressive force rushing toward him from the house, like a blast of sinister energy.
Suddenly, a mocking laugh echoed in Father Diego's ears, causing every hair on his body to stand on end.
Father Diego closed his eyes, made the sign of the cross on his chest, and muttered under his breath.
"May the Lord protect us."
After silently praying, Father Diego opened his eyes again, and the strange sounds and oppressive feeling vanished, as if everything had been an illusion.
"Humph!"
Father Diego's expression turned serious. He knew the earlier sensation was a clear warning and that the entity possessing Mrs. Meheriban was likely more terrifying than he had initially realized.
"Father!" Brother Vorawi's voice called from beside him.
Father Diego instinctively looked over to see his assistant, Brother Vorawi, looking worried, his right hand already on his sword's hilt.
"I'm fine," Father Diego shook his head, his face grim. "The entity possessing Mrs. Meheriban is formidable. Its power is growing stronger. This isn't an ordinary demon."
Brother Vorawi glanced at the foreboding house, eyebrows furrowing. "Should we inform Bishop York? He's in Fromm Town, after all."
However, Father Diego looked at the anxious Duncan and his family and shook his head resolutely. "You've seen Mrs. Meheriban's condition. At this rate, she won't hold on much longer."
Brother Vorawi hesitated but ultimately deferred to the determined look in his superior's eyes.
"Father, I will protect you with my life!"
"I know you will," Father Diego's gaze softened slightly.
With that, he led the way toward the house, despite the warm sunlight. As they stepped into the yard, everyone felt an icy chill that made them shiver involuntarily.
This chill wasn't just skin-deep; it seeped from the heart, spreading through the body to the bones.
Father Diego suddenly stopped and looked back at the fearful Duncan and his family, especially his wife Jano and the children clinging to her. He sighed.
"You should wait outside, if you trust me."
Duncan bit his lip, glanced at his wife and children, and nodded.
"Listen to Father Diego. Wait outside. I'll go in with him."
Jano nodded in agreement, knowing there was no need to subject the children to such a terrifying place.
Father Diego smiled slightly in reassurance, then led Duncan and Brother Vorawi toward the house. He picked up the bottle of holy water, slowly unscrewing the cap and pouring some along the path.
In the light of the setting sun, the water splashed and sparkled, momentarily dispelling some of the cold, making it less severe.
"Indeed, Bishop York's methods are effective!" Father Diego thought with relief.
