DxD: Lost in Time

Chapter 34: Live To Fight Another Day

"Everyone okay?"

The voice was calm, almost casual, but the presence behind it was anything but.

A man stood before them, draped in a white haori accented with gold. His face was obscured by a bone-white mask, its menacing set of teeth and ominous red markings making it all the more unsettling.

She felt it immediately—an aura that screamed bloodlust and danger. It wasn't just magic; it was something deeper, something that clawed at her very soul. Yet, she couldn't move.

Not because she didn't want to—but because she couldn't.

This man had appeared out of nowhere. No magic fluctuations, no spatial disturbances. Nothing.

One moment, he wasn't there. The next, he was standing ahead of them as if he had simply stepped into existence.

'He's fast.'

His gaze swept over them, sharp and calculating, before settling on her.

"Are you in any way related to the Baels?"

His voice was eerily calm, his posture relaxed—yet she felt as though she was standing before a beast just moments before it struck.

She swallowed, forcing herself to meet his piercing gaze.

"Y-Yes," she answered, her voice betraying the slight tremor in her chest.

His eyes narrowed, their shape curving into slits.

Before she could even react, another figure appeared beside him—a short woman she recognized instantly.

"Are they okay, Kagetsuki-san?"

Serafall's voice was gentle, her gaze soft as she looked past the mask, meeting the eyes hidden beneath.

'What is happening? Do they know each other?'

She could only watch, stunned, as the two exchanged glances, her mind racing with questions she wasn't sure she wanted answered.

"He's an ally of the Old-Satan Faction. Say hello to her, Tsuki-chan!" Serafall announced excitedly, completely unfazed by the tension in the air.

The masked man, 'Tsuki-chan' furrowed his brows at her.

Sometimes, I swear, this woman is trying to get herself killed. Who casually introduces someone like him like that?

Kagetsuki turned his gaze back to me. Sharp. Unreadable.

"My name is Kagetsuki, as Serafall mentioned. I am an ally. I hope we can work together in the future." He extended his hand, waiting patiently.

At first, my hand trembled slightly, but I steeled myself and gripped his hand firmly. "My name is Venelana Gremory. It's a pleasure to meet you, Kagetsuki-san."

He nodded, his expression hidden behind his mask. "Likewise." Then, he turned to the last remaining member of their group. "And you?"

"So, she finally let you join the war," Lady Sitri remarked, her tone casual.

I couldn't help but wonder if I was missing something. How did they know each other? And why were they speaking with him so casually?

"Yeah. Your daughter's a bit overprotective," Kagetsuki responded, just as Serafall activated a magic circle and teleported us to base. As we passed through the camp, there was a palpable mix of respect and fear directed toward Kagetsuki.

It couldn't have been his appearance alone that commanded such attention. If it were only his looks, it would've likely sparked hostility, not fear. But I decided to keep the question to myself for now.

As we walked past tents, the same mixture of begrudging respect and unexplained fear echoed from everyone we passed. We finally reached the main base of operations.

Inside the tent, I found Sirzechs looking up from a paper sprawled across the table. He nodded in Kagetsuki's direction before returning to his work, seemingly unfazed by the masked man's presence.

"So, how are the casualties on our side?" The green-haired devil, likely an Astoroth and my son's friend, asked from the side.

"We've suffered casualties, but they're not as severe as last time," Sirzechs replied, his eyes brightening slightly. "We've also managed to thin the enemy ranks." His voice grew more determined. "I plan to bring this war to a close soon, with the Anti-Satan Faction emerging victorious."

The room erupted into cheers, hands raised in unity and defiance. But Venelana's attention remained divided. Her gaze flickered toward Kagetsuki, watching him closely for any sign of what he truly thought about Sirzechs' words. His expression, hidden behind his mask, was unreadable.

"So, do you have any plans? I'm in this war to contribute to the cause," he said, his voice steady as always.

This Chapter was really short wasn't it? I swear it wasn't on purpose. I was working on another project and well... I may have gotten a bit carried away.

Not to mention I was watching Anime the day before and never slept. I threw myself to the bed and before I knew it, I was in the land of dreams.

Anyways, I was just too exhausted to right. I also prepared a trailer for my next project. However, I am kinda anxious since this is my first fanfiction and this current project is my first novel.

I am hesitating here. What do you think? I won't describe characters because it's not necessary.

---

I stood amidst the soldiers—men and women I had fought alongside, trained with, and once called comrades.

Yet, at this moment, I was no longer an ally. Their indifferent gazes said it all.

"Aster Starfall, you are under arrest. Judgment has been passed. You shall be sentenced to death."

The words echoed through the air, time itself seeming to slow.

Without hesitation, I leaped back. A split second later, jagged spikes erupted from the earth where I had just stood.

A fireball roared toward me, its heat searing my skin even before impact. Reacting on instinct, I conjured an energy platform beneath my feet, pushing off to evade just in time.

"Why are you doing this?!" Avelora's voice rang out, laced with confusion and anger.

One of the knights—one I recognized—stepped forward. "My princess, please do not interfere. These are the direct orders of the ruler of this kingdom."

The kingdom... betrayed me?!

Shouts erupted from the streets. My ears rang as the voices of the people—those I had protected—turned venomous.

"Kill him already!"

"He never belonged here to begin with!"

"He is a monster!"

That last one stung the most. While the first two came from the mages, that last one... It came from a kid of all people.

Mira and Yachiru stood a short distance away, their expressions torn between worry and hesitation.

And in that moment, something inside me cracked.

I exhaled—a breath that started as a whisper but ended as a chuckle.

Why am I laughing? Is it because I of the betrayal, or do I find this situation amusing?

Nevertheless, I had bottled it all up for too long.

And at that very moment—the moment I would never forget for the rest of my life...

All hell broke loose.
