Chapter 25: Chapter 24: Daily Life At School [Part 2]
The teacher had just opened the textbook, preparing to begin the lesson, when Nobita rushed to the door. He stood there, head lowered and right hand raised, as though he didn't have the courage to look up.
The teacher, seeing him from across the room, felt frustration bubble up. He had dealt with Nobita's tardiness before, and he didn't like it one bit. He shot him a stern look, his voice laced with anger.
"Nobita! You're late again! Why are you always like this? You never learn! Did you even do your homework yesterday?" he scolded him, shaking his head in exasperation.
The classroom filled with the sounds of giggles and whispers. It wasn't unusual for Nobita to be at the center of teasing. Some students couldn't resist the urge to enjoy his discomfort. Among the ones laughing, Jaian and Suneo were the loudest. Their mockery rang in the air as they aimed their taunts directly at Nobita.
But there were a couple of students who didn't join in the laughter—Dekisugi and Shizuka.
Shizuka, as always, was worried about Nobita. Ever since they were young, she had done her best to protect him from bullying. No matter the situation, she would never laugh at him.
Dekisugi, on the other hand, wasn't particularly interested in the drama. He found it all a little silly. Laughing at Nobita didn't seem like something worth his time, and the whole scene felt childish. He didn't care to join in.
"If I were to laugh, I might as well join my old school friends and relive some of those middle school moments," Dekisugi thought to himself, shrugging off the situation with mild indifference.
"Jaian and Suneo, you two, stand up!" the teacher commanded, her voice sharp and firm.
Jaian, with his boastful nature, and Suneo, always ready with a smug comment, were not the best examples of students. Jaian's grades were only second to Nobita's, and Suneo often hovered in the middle range. Neither of them had a strong sense of discipline. Yet, despite their habit of mocking Nobita, they were now standing in front of the teacher with their heads bowed in silence.
Dekisugi couldn't help but shake his head at the sight. He found it amusing how the three of them seemed to be in a never-ending cycle of standing outside for their misdeeds. It was clear that their 'friendship' was nothing more than an ongoing series of punishments and corrections.
The teacher was clearly displeased as he turned back to the class. "Alright, students. Do not follow the example of these three. One is late every day and never does his homework. The other two have no discipline whatsoever. Forget about them. Open your textbooks to page forty-nine, and let's start the lesson."
He didn't give any further attention to the students in the hallway as he continued the lesson. Nobita stood there, still at the door, feeling unfairly judged. He couldn't help but feel a little wronged by the teacher's accusations.
"Teacher!" Nobita called out hesitantly, his voice carrying a hint of frustration. "I did my homework yesterday! You've got it all wrong!"
The teacher glanced back at him, confused. "Huh? Nobita, you actually did your homework?" He motioned for him to come forward, his expression a mix of disbelief and curiosity.
Nobita, still standing by the door, reluctantly handed over his homework book, feeling slightly embarrassed. "I did it all by myself. No one helped me, not even Shizuka or Dekisugi."
The teacher flipped through the pages of the homework book, his eyes scanning the answers. To his surprise, there were no mistakes. Everything was done correctly.
"Well, well, Nobita. You actually did everything right!" he exclaimed, his voice softening. "Not bad, Nobita. Your performance today, aside from being late, has really impressed me."
Nobita's face lit up. He was overjoyed. "Does this mean I don't have to stand outside anymore?" he asked, unable to hide his excitement.
"That's right. Since your homework is all correct, I'll let you off the hook this time. Go back to your seat and sit down," the teacher said, his tone much lighter now.
Nobita cheered and bounced back to his seat, his excitement clearly visible. Jaian and Suneo, who were still standing outside, watched in disbelief as Nobita got off so easily.
"That stinky Nobita doesn't even have to stand!" Jaian muttered, fists clenched. "I'll get him after school. I'll give him a good punch!"
Suneo, who was quick to manipulate Jaian's anger, leaned in and whispered with a smirk, "Yeah, that's right. After school, let's show him what happens when he gets special treatment."
Jaian, still angry, nodded. "Yeah! I'll teach him a lesson."
Dekisugi, who had been observing this whole scene from his seat, shook his head and thought to himself, "It's all a bit ridiculous. How can they be so childish?"
Time passed, and the teacher soon announced the end of the lesson. "Alright, class. Get out of your seats. We have a math test in the next class. If you don't do well, I'll be calling your parents!"
The teacher's usual pre-test warning filled the classroom. He didn't actually call parents that often, but the threat was enough to make students nervous.
After the teacher left the room to prepare for the next class, Shizuka bounced over to Dekisugi's desk. "Dekisugi, the manga you drew is amazing! I couldn't stop reading it. I was completely fascinated!"
Dekisugi looked a little embarrassed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, I'm glad you liked it, Shizuka. I'll finish it in a few days. Once it's done, I'll try submitting it to a publisher. Maybe they'll like it too."
Shizuka beamed at him. "I'm sure they will! You've got so much talent!"
As they spoke, two girls from another class overheard the conversation and walked up to Dekisugi's desk. "Dekisugi, are you drawing manga? Can we take a look?"
Dekisugi, surprised by the attention, smiled politely. "Sure, if you want to see it. But you'll have to return it to me after school."
The two girls eagerly accepted the offer, excited to see his work. Dekisugi silently noted that he should probably get to know their names better.
Meanwhile, Jaian, still fuming from the earlier incident, stormed over to Nobita's desk. "Hey, stinky Nobita! How dare you make me stand outside the classroom?"
Dekisugi couldn't help but find it a little amusing. Jaian, trying to act all tough, was still just an elementary school kid at the end of the day.
