Diary Of Service Club, Helping The Elf Princess

Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Concerned Kaede

"Onii-chan, bye-bye~"

"See you, Hachiman-Oniichan."

After finishing breakfast with a hint of worry, Komachi got dressed neatly, said goodbye to Hikigaya, and left for school with Asogi Shion.

She needed to ask Shion properly about what exactly happened between her brother and Shion last night. Could it be that her brother really started treating Shion like a little sister? That would be a huge loss.

One older brother's little sister is enough with her alone. Shion was someone she had brought over to be her brother's wife.

Feeling Komachi's gaze beside her, Asogi Shion felt uneasy but didn't know how to explain.

After all, she really did do something bad with Hachiman-Oniichan.

"Is something up with Komachi? She doesn't seem very cheerful. And Shion looks a bit off too."

The Kaede sisters had arrived early at Hikigaya's house. They met up with Vignette and Hikigaya, and Kaede looked curiously at the departing figures of Komachi and Asogi Shion.

"They probably just didn't sleep well."

Although the reasons for their lack of sleep were completely different.

Hikigaya shook his head without elaborating further.

After activating the "Love Life Mode," Komachi couldn't see or hear their actions. Even if he carried Shion to Komachi's bedside, Komachi wouldn't feel anything. After all, in Love Life Mode, Komachi wasn't even in the same space as him and Shion.

However, the fact that Shion didn't return to Komachi's room to sleep was true, and Komachi would definitely imagine all sorts of things because of that.

But what could Komachi even say? Shion was someone she had brought in, and she had always been matchmaking him with Shion.

She was probably just shocked at how quickly things had progressed between him and Shion.

"Just didn't sleep well…"

Kaede glanced at the calm Hikigaya walking ahead and hesitated. Actually, she didn't want to ask this particular question. But how was she supposed to phrase her real concern?

Hikigaya, along with Kaede, Suzu, and Vignette, walked to the nearby train station and boarded the train.

Since they had left home earlier today, there weren't many people on the train, and all three girls managed to get seats this time.

Hikigaya stood alone in front of them.

"Hachiman, how long is Shion planning to stay at your house?"

Kaede held it in for a while but couldn't resist eventually. She raised her head, looking at Hikigaya standing in front of her, and asked softly.

After returning home yesterday, Suzu had reminded her to pay attention to the girls around Hachiman. Thinking about it, she realized it made sense.

Asogi Shion might technically be staying in Komachi's room, but in reality, she was living under the same roof as Hachiman.

With Hachiman's parents working night shifts and rarely being around except on weekends, the daily living arrangements were essentially just Komachi, Hachiman, and Shion.

When they visited Hachiman's house yesterday, Shion's attire was ridiculously casual—loose shorts and a T-shirt revealing her smooth legs and delicate collarbone.

Though Komachi dressed similarly at home, she was Hachiman's sister, and Hachiman naturally wouldn't have feelings for her. But that didn't mean he wouldn't feel something toward Shion.

Shion, although Komachi's classmate, had developed quite well physically. Spending days and nights in such close proximity, what if something inappropriate happened between them?

That said, with Shion's parents in the middle of a divorce, she couldn't exactly urge Shion to return home and face that mess.

Kaede had struggled with this thought for quite a while before finally deciding to ask.

"I'm planning to contact the landlord of the neighboring apartment at noon to see if there's an available room for Shion to rent. If possible, it'd be best if it's next to Vignette's, so the two can look out for each other."

Hikigaya glanced at Kaede in slight surprise, explaining softly.

His tsundere childhood friend had finally realized the problem, huh.

Kaede's sudden question had a clear intention, which made it apparent he could now make plans to "capture" this childhood friend.

To be honest, aside from his family, Kaede and Suzu were the people closest to him. He should have made a move on them much earlier.

However, having grown up with Kaede, they were simply too familiar. Kaede's lively and cheerful personality also meant she didn't react strongly to close physical contact, such as hugging or patting. He didn't even know where to start.

After all, it wasn't just Kaede he wanted—he wanted Suzu as well.

Now that Kaede seemed to be taking the initiative, things would be much easier for him later.

"Next to Vignette's? From how you're talking, are you planning to pay for her yourself?"

Kaede froze, hesitating as she looked at Hikigaya.

She had only wanted to ask when Shion might return to her own home, but now it seemed Shion was planning to stay nearby for a long time.

"Of course not. Shion brought over her savings when she went back to grab her clothes. Vignette mentioned the rent for the neighboring apartments is fairly cheap, so renting for a while won't be a problem."

Hikigaya immediately denied the notion that he would cover Shion's rent. As for Shion's family situation, there was no need to bring it up. He, Komachi, and Shion had already discussed everything, and there was no reason to elaborate further.

After all, if it got out that Shion was being "supported" by someone, her reputation would suffer, and even Kaede might think he had ulterior motives.

Although initially, he really didn't have any special thoughts and was merely pursuing mission rewards, now… he couldn't honestly say the same.

Even if he hadn't initiated anything, and even if he had no intentions of demanding anything in return from Shion, to outsiders, there was no difference.

Hikigaya spoke while subtly winking at Vignette with the eye Kaede couldn't see.

"Vignette, are you familiar with this situation?"

Kaede looked at Vignette curiously. Since when were these two so close? Even she, Kaede, didn't know about this, yet Vignette seemed to know first.

"Uh… Yesterday, when Hachiman was cooking, he asked me about it. The rent for our apartment is indeed not very high…"

Under Kaede's gaze, Vignette bit her lip hesitantly and chose not to reveal that it was Hachiman who paid the rent for Shion Asogi's place.

What she said wasn't a lie, but this act of concealment made her feel like she was deceiving her good friend, Kaede.

However, based on her past experiences, she believed Hachiman was a good person. Thinking from the perspective that Hachiman was doing this for Shion's sake, she felt that Shion's situation was not something suitable to share with others.

Spreading it around would cause unnecessary trouble and subject Shion to gossip.

There might be something going on…

Silent and reserved Suzu stared at Vignette, observing her guilt-ridden, uneasy expression. Then she shifted her gaze to Hikigaya.

"Kaede, you don't need to worry about Shion's situation. I can handle her problems. She's a pretty obedient kid."

Hachiman explained gently to Kaede while quietly placing his hand on Suzu's head, softly ruffling her short hair.

Although he was patting his sister's head in front of Kaede, Suzu's taciturn personality meant she wouldn't have any exaggerated reactions in this situation.

Come to think of it, although Kaede and Suzu looked very alike, his interactions with Suzu were far fewer than those with Kaede. If he wanted to consider both sisters, he should probably pay more attention to the silent younger sister who always followed them around.

"…"

Suzu felt the warmth of Hachiman's hand on her head and silently turned to glance at Kaede, who was beside her.

'This idiot Kaede…'

She kept saying she wanted to keep an eye on the girls around Hachiman, but it wasn't just Shion, who had recently moved into Hachiman's home.

"Oh, if Shion ever needs help with anything, just let me know directly, Hachiman."

Kaede didn't notice the small interactions between Hachiman and Suzu. Hearing that Shion would be moving out of Hachiman's house, she no longer felt worried and turned her attention back to her phone, pondering other matters.

Even though Shion would just be moving to the old apartment next door, as long as she wasn't under the same roof and constantly together, it was fine.

After all, she also lived next door to Hachiman's house. She was his childhood friend, and when it came to feelings, there was no way she could lose to anyone else.

Right now, she had more troublesome things to think about.

She had finally finished dealing with the influx of transfer students from before, but recently, a few male students in their second year had died, giving her another headache.

The police had come to the school to investigate, but they hadn't gathered any useful clues, so the case had been put on hold. The school no longer needed to assist with the investigation.

However, she still had many issues to handle on her end.

After all, the incidents involving those three students happened near the school. As the student council president, she needed to take steps to divert everyone's attention. Even though the deceased students had terrible reputations while alive and many classmates they bullied were openly celebrating their deaths, she couldn't allow such discussions to continue unchecked.

She also needed to inspect all the surveillance cameras around the school with her team.

Any malfunctioning cameras had to be repaired or replaced, and she even had to consider approving another budget to purchase more surveillance cameras to cover every corner of the campus.

If another fatal incident happened on school grounds and the surveillance cameras failed again, it would be a disaster.

In short, she was busy again recently, with many tasks piling up. Fortunately, her senior, Meguri Shiromeguri, often helped her, saving her from feeling overwhelmed.

Her school seniors were so helpful, yet Hachiman, her childhood friend, wasn't offering her any assistance.

"What is it? Why are you suddenly staring at me?"

Hikigaya subtly moved his hand from Suzu's head and placed it on Kaede's short hair as she glared at him.

"Hmph, it's nothing. Just remember to submit the results of your club's activities for the Service Club. If you don't produce any meaningful results, don't blame me for cutting your club's funding."

Kaede, suppressing her urge to bite Hachiman in frustration, snorted at him.

Previously, she had asked Hachiman to join the student council as a secretary to help her, but he had claimed he needed to be home for his sister, Komachi. She believed him.

But not long after, Hachiman had the nerve to start a Service Club, and when he couldn't recruit members, he came begging her for approval. It had truly infuriated her.

Even though the club now had members—who were all beautiful girls—she didn't think Hachiman and someone like Yukinoshita Yukino, a noble young lady from a distinguished family, could develop anything serious. Such highly sought-after, exceptional women weren't so easily fooled.

Besides, who other than herself, his childhood friend since forever, would care about someone like Hachiman?

Kaede quietly vented her frustrations about Hachiman and felt much better afterward.

"Uh…"

Hachiman felt a twinge of realization at Kaede's words.

'Club results… I completely forgot about that.'

The student council checked every club's activities to ensure they weren't wasting resources or misusing funding.

It seemed like he would need to start taking on more legitimate requests for the Service Club from now on.

After all, the bizarre requests they had been handling couldn't be documented in the Service Club's activity records, let alone submitted for student council review.

If he tried, the disciplinary committee would probably come knocking on their clubroom door.

When the train arrived at their station, the group disembarked together and walked leisurely toward Sobu High School. They passed through the routine inspection at the school gate and entered the campus.

Kaede greeted her friend, Makoto Amamiya, before rushing off to the student council office with Suzu in tow.

Before leaving, Suzu glanced silently at Hachiman, then followed Kaede with an expressionless face.

"I'll be going too, Hachiman."

Noticing the interaction, Vignette said goodbye to Hachiman and headed to her own classroom.

On the train earlier, Vignette had noticed Hachiman patting Suzu's head, but she didn't think much of it. Since Kaede and Suzu had such a close relationship with Hachiman as childhood friends, a simple gesture like patting someone's head didn't seem worth paying attention to.

These minor issues paled compared to the guilt she felt for deceiving her friend.

Even though she hadn't lied, her justifications didn't sit well with her own conscience.

"What a kind-hearted demon…"

Watching Vignette walk away, Hachiman silently sighed to himself.

He had, of course, noticed Vignette's inner struggle, but he didn't say anything. Letting her grapple with it a little was fine.

Vignette's sense of morality was almost too high. It was so lofty that he worried her saintly aura might one day illuminate him, so he figured it was better for her to get used to his way of doing things.

'Not that I'm trying to corrupt her or anything.'

Previously, he had considered how to deal with Gabriel. By acting as a lazy slob, he could force the angel to take responsibility for him, keeping her from succumbing to idleness.

Now, he figured he could use a similar approach with Vignette. If he played his cards right, he might end up with both an angel and a demon taking care of him at home.

"Hikigaya-kun, good morning~"

Suddenly, a soft voice came from behind him. His body tensed for a moment before relaxing.

"Good morning, Tenma-san."

Hachiman turned around and saw the small blonde angel who had appeared silently behind him. He smiled and returned the greeting.

Just as he had been imagining Gabriel as his caretaker, she had appeared. Luckily, he wasn't in the habit of talking to himself, so his thoughts remained private.

"I didn't expect you to arrive so early today, Hikigaya-kun. That purple-haired girl earlier—is she your friend?"

Tenma shifted her gaze from where Vignette had disappeared and looked at Hachiman curiously.

She hadn't expected her classmate, who seemed only to possess a calm aura and robust vitality, to not only be familiar with an elven princess but also have connections to what seemed like a demon from the underworld.

"Oh, she's just a neighbor from the apartment complex next to mine. We've been walking to school together lately. By the way, Tenma-san, who's this next to you?"
