Chapter 320: C280

"From the report submitted by the Men in Black, S.H.I.E.L.D. concealed a significant amount of critical information during the Kree invasion in the last century," the Chinese representative said calmly.

"However, considering that the director at the time was Alexander Pierce, a known Hydra member, all of this seems reasonable."

"Alexander Pierce was indeed the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., but Nick Fury was directly involved during the Kree invasion," the U.S. representative added. "It's also possible that Hydra, represented by Alexander Pierce, established contact with the Skrulls. In short, while Nick Fury may not be a Hydra member, he is far from innocent."

At this moment, the Russian representative looked around the room. "We all understand the current situation, so let's express our positions on how to handle the S.W.O.R.D."

"I propose capturing Nick Fury immediately and taking control of all S.W.O.R.D. personnel—leave no one behind," the U.S. representative stated firmly.

"Anton Jameson, on behalf of the Men in Black, has requested the Skrull corpse sealed within S.H.I.E.L.D. He and the Justice League have promised to do their best to find a solution to counter the Skrulls' shape-shifting abilities," the U.S. representative continued.

"Agreed."

"Agreed."

For once, the major powers of the World Security Council unanimously passed the U.S. representative's proposal.

"Then, I recommend deploying the Special Forces to carry out this mission," the U.S. representative suggested.

Although the Special Forces are not officially part of the World Security Council, they have close ties to the major countries present.

After all, this specialized unit is a multinational alliance, functioning as another level of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Following the Battle of New York, the Special Forces gained widespread support for their role in resisting the Chitauri invasion.

This allowed the unit to expand rapidly from the original 23 member countries to the current 59, with all five permanent members of the United Nations participating.

Since the Special Forces were conceptualized and integrated by the United States, the U.S. holds the most influence, and its headquarters was established on the former site of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Washington headquarters.

"Approved," the other representatives agreed without objection.

The Special Forces, having recently moved from covert operations into the public eye, needed an opportunity to prove their value.

Unbeknownst to the World Security Council, their decision had already reached Nick Fury and his team before the Special Forces could even assemble.

S.W.O.R.D.

Director Maria Rambeau, a former black female pilot and close friend of Captain Marvel, was now in her fifties. Time had transformed her into a capable and respected leader.

However, according to the original timeline, Maria Rambeau would die two years after Thanos's snap due to overwhelming grief over her daughter becoming a victim of the Blip.

In her absence, Tyler Hayward—the very man responsible for dismantling Vision and someone many suspected of being a Skrull—would become the acting director.

For now, though, Maria Rambeau remained the head of S.W.O.R.D., with Tyler Hayward merely an agent under her command.

"We've been exposed," she said solemnly, looking at Nick Fury. "The World Security Council has already taken direct action against us. The Special Forces are en route. We won't have any chance to defend ourselves and will be charged with crimes against humanity... Nick, you are their primary target."

"I know," Nick Fury replied, his face expressionless, though his eyes betrayed a hint of despair. Years of hard work, all lost in a single day.

"Batman..." Fury muttered, frowning deeply.

He couldn't understand where his carefully laid plans had gone wrong.

According to the intelligence they received, Anton—had only recently taken charge of the Men in Black.

Yet, the organization seemed to have an incredibly detailed understanding of S.W.O.R.D., including extensive information on most of the Skrulls within the organization.

If it weren't for that, their current situation wouldn't be so dire. After years of loyal service to the World Security Council, Fury now found himself without any chance to defend his actions.

Crimes against humanity.

"It's really unexpected... One day, I would be wanted for crimes against humanity," Nick Fury said with a bitter smile.

For years, he believed he had dedicated himself wholeheartedly to protecting Earth, yet now, in the eyes of the World Security Council, he had become the very definition of a traitor to humanity.

"You're too stubborn, Nick," Maria Rambeau replied. "I've told you for years to share these things with the World Council, but you always believed they wouldn't agree with your methods. And now, things have spiraled out of control because of that."

"That's the reality," Nick Fury said, his expression hardening. "Politicians will always think differently from us. You don't understand—if it weren't for the endless extraterrestrial threats we've faced in the past year or so, the World Council wouldn't even care about this. Instead, they would have turned our allies into mere pawns in their game."

Maria Rambeau scoffed. "Well, now the World Council does care. But S.H.I.E.L.D. has lost their trust, and the result is exactly what you feared all along—if not worse."

"What's done is done. We can't just sit here and wait," Fury said after a moment of contemplation. "I'm taking the Skrulls and heading into space. We'll wait for the right time to return to Earth. Maria, you..."

"I'll stay," Maria interrupted firmly, her tone leaving no room for debate.

"I figured," Fury replied. "You know what will happen if you stay, right?"

"Yes," Maria said calmly. "They won't kill me. I'll cooperate, tell them everything they want to know—of course, I'll make sure they know that you're the one behind all of this, Nick. You asked me to establish the S.W.O.R.D., after all."

"Sure, if that's how you want to frame it," Fury said with a shrug, not taking her words too seriously.

Having Maria stay behind gave the World Council someone to hold accountable, buying him time.

Fury knew Maria's life wouldn't be in danger. She would be arrested and possibly endure interrogation, but nothing she couldn't handle.

When the time was right, he would return to Earth and clear their names. Until then, patience was key.

"I'm leaving," Fury said, rising from his seat. "The Special Forces will be here any minute. I'm out of time."

"Go," Maria replied. "If you see Carol out there, tell her to come back to Earth soon. I haven't seen her in over ten years... I miss her."

"I will. Goodbye," Fury said softly.

Without further delay, Nick Fury gathered the Skrulls at the S.W.O.R.D. and boarded the spacecraft—Captain Marvel's trophy from the Kree conflict decades ago.

Boom!

Maria Rambeau watched the spacecraft soar into the sky, leaving Earth behind. A mixture of helplessness and regret flickered across her face.

Boom!

Minutes later, the Special Forces arrived on the scene.

Maria, showing no resistance, raised her hands in surrender.

"I'll answer whatever you ask," she said with a shrug. "But I'm innocent."

"Where's Nick Fury?" Hawke demanded, scanning the room. The entire S.W.O.R.D. was empty, save for Maria.

"He's gone," she replied, pointing to the sky. "He took the spaceship—and all the Skrulls—and left Earth."

"What?" Hawke's eyes widened in disbelief.

"He escaped?"
