Chapter 317: C277
S.W.O.R.D Bureau
In Marvel Comics, four major organizations handle various global and intergalactic affairs: the S.W.O.R.D Bureau, S.H.I.E.L.D., the A.R.M.O.R Bureau, and the X-Men.
The A.R.M.O.R Bureau is responsible for monitoring parallel timelines and alternate realities. Its members are primarily humans from Earth.
Most of the time, once intelligence gathering is complete, their findings are handed over to either S.H.I.E.L.D. or the S.W.O.R.D Bureau for further action.
The X-Men, of course, are composed of mutants, with Professor X as their guiding figure.
When the responsibilities of these organizations overlap, S.H.I.E.L.D. typically takes precedence. However, in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), neither the A.R.M.O.R Bureau nor the X-Men officially exist.
As for S.H.I.E.L.D., there's little need for an introduction—everyone already know everything about them.
Now, let's focus on the S.W.O.R.D.
Chronologically, the S.W.O.R.D Bureau first appeared in the WandaVision series, gradually coming to light after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
One of their first known actions was dismantling Vision's body, treating him as a valuable resource rather than an individual.
Their handling of the situation was even more callous than S.H.I.E.L.D.'s past operations, which ultimately enraged Wanda.
Her grief and fury led her to use powerful reality-altering magic to encapsulate the town of Westview, creating a fictional version of Vision and triggering the events of the series.
While WandaVision focused on Wanda and Vision's personal life, which some may find unremarkable, one notable detail was the introduction of the S.W.O.R.D as a fully established organization, not merely a post-S.H.I.E.L.D.reformation.
In reality, the S.W.O.R.D was founded decades earlier.
In the late 20th century, following the Captain Marvel incident and the resulting Kree-Skrull conflict, Maria Rambeau—Carol Danvers' close friend and an accomplished pilot—established the S.W.O.R.D in response to growing interstellar threats.
The bureau's primary mission was to oversee extraterrestrial affairs and manage interstellar disputes.
Its members consisted of both humans and a specific group of aliens—the Skrulls, who were first introduced in Captain Marvel and are known for their shape-shifting abilities.
From what little information is available in the MCU, it seems that the S.W.O.R.D initially operated as a subsidiary of S.H.I.E.L.D., with Maria Rambeau as its director and Nick Fury quietly supporting its expansion from behind the scenes.
When S.H.I.E.L.D. was later disbanded, the S.W.O.R.D naturally stepped in to take over some of its responsibilities, eventually becoming a direct agency under the World Security Council.
As things stand, S.H.I.E.L.D. has not been fully disbanded, which suggests that the S.W.O.R.D remains a secondary division within it—one that few people are aware of.
However, Nick Fury's recent transfer to the S.W.O.R.D has brought the organization into the public eye.
But why would Fury, of all people, request such a transfer?
Wouldn't that be an admission of failure, a blow to his own legacy?
Anton's mind raced through everything he knew about the S.W.O.R.D. His expression darkened slightly, and his demeanor shifted—so much so that even Z, standing beside him, sensed something was off.
"Anton, is there a problem?" Z asked cautiously.
For a brief moment, Z felt an overwhelming pressure emanating from Anton—an aura completely different from the easygoing man he had met just two weeks ago.
He was stunned. His perception of Anton changed instantly, realizing that this man was not someone to be underestimated.
With everything he knew, Anton was far from an ordinary civilian.
Z recalled what was in Anton's dossier—before the Battle of Washington, Anton had been a student at Columbia University.
Yet he had single-handedly taken down multiple terrorists without sustaining a single injury, saving an entire banquet of people with almost supernatural skill.
At the time, his remarkable feats had been overshadowed by his extraordinary teammates, allowing most to overlook Anton's own talents.
But now, the truth was becoming impossible to ignore.
"The problem is big," Anton suddenly said, breaking Z out of his thoughts.
Z listened carefully as Anton continued.
"Do you know what the S.W.O.R.D really does?" Anton asked.
"Uh… no," Z admitted.
And that was the problem.
Anton knew that not knowing was often more dangerous than knowing too much.
Z thought for a moment before saying, "However, I heard that the S.W.O.R.D is only a secondary department within S.H.I.E.L.D., probably equivalent to its intelligence division."
"That intelligence division isn't as simple as it seems," Anton replied.
Since Z was his deputy—and, in the future, would be executing most of the Men in Black's operations—Anton didn't mind revealing some confidential information to him.
"I don't think you're aware of this, but aliens have been invading Earth since the last century."
"What?"
Z's expression shifted to one of shock. He truly had no idea.
The intelligence regarding the Kree invasion had always been classified at the highest levels. The United States had the most extensive information on the subject, but even within their intelligence network, access was heavily restricted.
Only high-ranking officials like John Keller had ever been privy to details about extraterrestrial threats.
But things were different now.
The existence of aliens was no longer a secret—it had become widely known, even sensationalized in the media. What was once top-secret information was now common knowledge.
"They were called the Kree," Anton continued. "For reasons unknown, they invaded Earth in the last century. But in the end, they were driven back."
"Driven back? In the last century?"
Z looked even more bewildered. To him, it sounded like a fairy tale.
The Earth of the last century was far weaker than the Earth of today. And yet, despite facing an advanced alien race capable of traversing the vastness of space, humanity had somehow managed to repel them?
Gulp.
Z swallowed hard, his face betraying his shock.
"I won't go into the details," Anton said flatly. "But after that incident, the S.W.O.R.D was established."
His tone was calm, measured—but Z could sense the weight behind his words.
Then Anton added, "The important part is that, during the invasion, an alien species infiltrated Earth. Very few people in the world know about this… and the organization responsible for handling it was S.H.I.E.L.D."
Z couldn't help but speak up. "But what does that have to do with the S.W.O.R.D ?"
In truth, an unsettling thought had already formed in his mind. But it was so unbelievable that he struggled to accept it.
If things were really as he suspected… then S.H.I.E.L.D. had been playing an incredibly dangerous game.
Anton's next words confirmed his worst fears.
"The name of that alien race is the Skrulls. They possess the ability to shapeshift, and once transformed, they can temporarily access the memories of the person they're impersonating. They are, quite literally, an alien race born with extraordinary abilities."
Z's eyes widened as Anton spoke.
And then, the final revelation came.
"I can say with certainty that the S.WO.R.D is composed of both humans and aliens. At this moment, most of the Skrulls hiding on Earth are likely working as operatives within the S.W.O.R.D , scattered all over the world."
Silence.
Z said nothing for a long time.
As a Man in Black agent and Anton's second-in-command, he was trained to read between the lines.
And now, he fully understood the implications of what Anton had just revealed.
